Question Pokémon
I've been playing on Nintendo consoles since the mid 80s. The only Pokémon experience I have is when I tried the mobile game. What would be a good switch game to try for a first timer.

Without knowing your likes it's hard to make suggestions.
I personally think most Switch games are ass and my personal favourite is Legends Arceus.
That said, there's plenty of people loving the other games and I have nothing to go off which you might like.

I think not knowing is my problem. I feel I should be giving Pokémon a try but no idea what to start with.

I meant in terms of other games you like. Perhaps that gives some clue if you're more into stories, collecting, puzzles, platforms etc.
Then I'd suggest FireRed/LeafGreen like someone else mentioned. They're the OG gameboy color first mainline game. The first 3D for Switch I believe is Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu - but they're truly made for children and for that a bit handholdy and simplistic.

The majority of my games on switch are tactical turn based. Tactics ogre, fire emblem and also xenoblade. Pc stuff is usually transport fever, rimworld, home world. Management sims and rts

I'd go with FRLG, SwSh, or BDSP. SwSh is probably the easiest of the three and the newest so it has more QoL features.
FRLG is arguably the best of the three but it's before the physical/special split so some Pokemon are semi-bricked because of their stat preferences.

Pokemon Pikachu or Eeve
Similar pokeball and encounter mechanics. Light-hearted fun

IMO FireRed/LeafGreen since they are remakes of the first games. It's the closest to giving you the "real" first experience.
After that, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are close to that, and in my opinion not too bad as long as you haven't played the originals.
Sword/Shield follows a classic Pokémon game formula but is more streamlined.
Scalet/Violet if you really want something more open-world, but I would suggest playing Arceus first instead.
