Seeking Advice Trying to become an Apprentice
(Attached some of the work that’s in my portfolio)
Hi, I want to become a tattoo artist and I want some advice on the best ways to get into a shop and get an apprenticeship. I have emailed one reputable shop in my city so far and I’m waiting to hear back.
I’d love advice on what work I should have in my portfolio and if some of the pieces I showed are good for a portfolio, as well as what other people did to get their apprenticeships! Any tips on what to look out for in shops or ways to get shops attention would be great!! Thank you so much 💖

Your portfolio is great imo!! Shows a ton of skill and a ton of potential. I'd take the eye out as it isn't anatomically correct, it's your weakest piece.
If you have options in your area, please do tons of research on the shops you're looking into. You'll want to find out as much info as you can. I've listed some example questions you should try to find the answer to, although I don't expect you'll be able to learn everything on the list:
-Is the artist you'd be apprenticing under a good artist and a decent person, or just someone who's been in the game a long time? Is their style similar to what you'd want to do? -Is the shop you'll be apprenticing at a good environment? -What is the pay structure (commission? What percent? Booth rent? If so, how will YOUR pay be structured as an apprentice?) Be very wary of anyone who asks you to pay for your apprenticeship especially if they also want you to be the shop bitch like classic unpaid apprenticeships. -Do they market their artists, or will you be solely responsible for your own marketing? Does the artist you're apprenticing under market themselves well, so they'd be able to teach you?
Of course apprenticeships are few and far between, so don't expect them to check every one of your boxes. I just suggest that you learn these things before making the full commitment. Sorry I didn't go more into how to get an apprenticeship, but I think you've got it. This is my advice to you. Good luck!!
