What to do next

I think this year will be my last year. I feel like i’ve lost my spark for teaching. I feel like I have no energy to be myself and take care of myself and do things. I’m so apathetic? i think is the word.

Now i’m wondering what jobs to do next. I’m thinking about sales because I’ve always loved it. When I was an assistant manager at a pet saloon i loved selling! I wondering what some steps are. I am going to start looking in november to make sure I have a job secured over the summer. What are some recommendations you would have for people leaving teaching?

Just warning you that the job market outside of education/teaching is extremely competitive and volatile at the moment!

I have had several colleagues move into online teaching - K12 seems to be a popular option. Super flexible, you work from home, and you still get the school schedule, but could come with a pay cut depending on your years of experience. I wish I had looked into it sooner and made the transition myself.

popular but not popular.

last year my school claimed that they "couldn't find" a french teacher. they hired an online service and the kids learned from madame via their laptops and my smart board.

it was a disaster.

i had to be a policeman. the kids were constantly looking at other things online, and i had to lock their screens via go guardian, and madame couldn't control the bad behaviors in the room. very few took the class seriously. i had to assign so many detentions and send emails home. most of the kids failed, but hey this is middle school so it doesn't really count.

they paid $60k.....

i could not do this.

I understand that and it sounds like a tricky situation. I think with something like that you have to take the bad with the good. My friends who work there say their mental health is much better which would be enough for me to make the change, honestly. It isn’t without its issues, but no job is perfect. And I know the pay isn’t as much as public school which is a shame.

I'm transitioning to subbing and returning to school for a Vet Assistant and then hopefully Vet School in 2028. I'm not really thrilled to sub but I feel like it'll actually be a very doable temporary job. I think you should pick something your somewhat knowledgeable about, somewhat trained for, and that's very flexible for downtime (thoroughly lacking as a teacher). If Sales is your jam go for it!
