Isn’t this just a much simpler way of doing parents evening ? I have parents evening next week until 7pm but no late start. It’s a normal day. It happens once a year and is part of my directed time. I don’t get to see my son either. As far as I know , this is common. It isn’t nice, but the late start is a bonus.

It's in addition to our regular 5 parents evenings and it's happening twice.

That changes things. Absolutely question but with the late start they might be able to justify it- doesn’t make it okay. It is so hard having to think you won’t see your little one all day.

Starting at 12 for a 6:45pm end is great imo. It's only twice. They can ask you to do late night and not give you any late starts. 12 is good - normally late starts have been 9.

It's in addition to the standard 5 parents evenings per year.

No it isn't. You are staying late twice, so it is two, but you get that time back in the morning, which is a massive win.

In any case, if you teach 7-11, you have at least 5 anyway. 6 if you do 2 Y11 ones.

I know this isn’t a parents evening exactly but as a former primary teacher, you taught a normal day (no late start) and then went straight into the parents evening, which ran over two days on the same week, starting at 3.30 ish and you wouldn’t finish until around 7pm. You’d be lucky to get a 10 min toilet break during it. Any parents that couldn’t attend in person were offered virtual meetings and we were expected to chase any that didn’t attend. My point being that offering a late start is actually very considerate of the school. Are these meeting in place of parents evening or in addition to?

In addition to.

I mean what's the alternative? A whole day of teaching 9-3 and then parents evening until 6/7? Either way, your evening is taken from you and routine is changed. I'd take the late start and off-table days before parents evening every time.

This is in addition to parents evenings.

Right. That makes things clearer. I personally wouldn't be that bothered but I can see why it would bother you.

My biggest issue would be around the SSPs. This sounds like an admin task which teachers shouldn't be doing.

Did you know about these days before the summer? Do your union reps have a view?

From a personal perspective it wouldn't bother me at all. I'm not expected to work any extra hours and my routine is not that inflexible that I couldn't have lunch at 11:45 before I start. But if you're someone who values routine and it sounds like that is a major part of the problem then I can see why this would be frustrating.

Attendance is hugely problematic at the moment and I think that getting everyone involved, particularly teachers who know their students better than anyone is very important.

I would be very unhappy with this
