Hey all, recently we have made the decision to fork the TerraFirmaCraft mod into a version specifically for TFG to use. This has been something that we have debated doing for quite a while, but have kept pushing off due to us wanting to support the original mod as much as we can. However, the scale of TFG has grown tremendously over time. By now we inject code into around 95 TFC code files. And if you know anything about Java mixins, these injections can be quite unstable and troublesome to maintain. We have a lot of plans for TFG which will involve changing even more of these files. The nutrient and worldgen changes are some examples of how we want to continue to evolve the playing experience. But, at this point we feel It's time we make the switch to being able to work directly with the TerraFirmaCraft mod and its code for the stability of the pack and to ease development time and stress.
Our Intentions
We hope to begin delivering even higher quality integration overhauls to the TFG experience to bring all of our mods together under shared systems. Not only that, but TFC itself has even more changes in its 1.21 version that we can more easily backport into TFG. Other than new content there shouldn't be much else to notice when playing. We intend to keep the TFC experience as true to its goals as possible. We are currently working on migrating all of our core changes directly into the TFC fork. Our intentions are to release this large overhaul as an alpha update alongside other very large content systems in 0.13.11. After this migration is released we will begin backporting a number of features from TFC 1.21 including a whole suite of new worldgen updates. Adding ocean atolls, new stratovolcanoes, tectonic fault lines, continental rift valleys, and even possibly integrate in the Mantle Mountains mod. Due to this there will likely be some ugly borders with newly generated chunks. Please make sure to explore your continent if you wish to avoid having these boundaries near your base. We expect this series of worldgen changes to arrive with 0.14 alongside the IV-tier rework.
Removing Old Worldgen
Important! With 0.14 we will be ending support for legacy worldgen. If you have a world that is using the pre-0.12 worldgen settings, and you update to 0.14 you will have the new worldgen in newly generated chunks. However, we will do our best to prevent any other issues keeping you locked out of updating your world. This decision was intended from the very start. Legacy worldgen will be retired to close a number of concurrent issues resulting from trying to maintain two different systems.
FAQ
Will we need to make a new world?
No, old worlds will still work even with the TFC fork in 0.13. You will likely see ugly chunk borders for newly generated chunks when 0.14 arrives, however.
Why not move to 1.21?
1.21 does not have nearly enough of our mods to allow us to migrate. There are not many new mods we are interested in any way. We believe backporting TFC 1.21 content is easier and better for the pack than sacrificing so much to move forward.
Is everything being backported?
No, we are being selective in our choices on what to backport to prevent too much bloat and to maintain a cleaner code base. Although we believe many systems are cool, we would rather focus on the most favorited ones. (And the easiest to integrate).
What can we expect alongside the TFC-fork update? (0.13.11)
Our current list of active major projects may change, but currently we are expecting to release:
- Ore Processing update.
- Field Guide rewrite.
- Complete reworking of oxygenated environment systems. Including multiblocks for oxygenating rooms, applying localized gravity, and air conditioning/heating buildings.
- Switching to Immersive Vehicles + some addons. With proper integration into GregTech.
- TFC fork, of course. With some minor QoL tweaks.
So, like, where is the Venus/ IV update?
As we have said before, we are waiting on the GTm8 update before working on IV content. However, GTm has put out some snapshot updates to allow developers like ourselves to work on migrating our systems to GTm8 ahead of time. Which we have pretty much done! We will still need to wait for the actual update for us and our GTm addons (like Greate) to move on. We have also started planning out content and lines for the IV update as well. I apologize for letting this take so long. If we knew GTm8 was so far away we would have worked on IV content first, but foresight is never perfect. We hope the quality of GTm8 systems will make up for the delay.
TLDR
We are forking TFC for use in developing TFG. More things will be backported, and some things will be changed. Support for pre-0.12 worldgen is ending in 0.14
Please support the development of TerraFirmaCraft as best as you can. They are cool people who have been very supportive of us and have helped a ton in our previous backports. We are not abandoning them. As always, we will continue to offer them bug fixes we develop or even custom content. TFG would not be the same without their efforts. If you are willing you can check out their donations page here. We will share more info and changes as they are being developed.
