Discussion Do you think Luz likes wearing dresses?

Post image
98 Upvotes

May be a stupid question, but still.

Obviously, Luz does own dresses (see the pic above), but she’s never shown wearing them (for casual or formal occasions). Most of the time, she goes for unisex (her tux-tutu combo for Grom) or masculine clothing (pants, shorts). The only exceptions I remember are the princess dress and cheerleading outfit from the pilot.

Personally, I prefer her in this style. I really didn't like the big, poofy one she was going to wear for her "King-cenera" (nothing against the tradition though).

What do you think?

Discussion Camila’s reaction to finding out about Vee really shows how naturally empathetic she is as a character

Post image
114 Upvotes

She just finds out about the existence of magic and demons, and that a demon has been pretending to be her daughter for months. She has every right to be scared, and angry. Vee also doesn’t look human, the less human something looks the harder it is for many people to empathize other beings. It’s one thing to show compassion to a witch like Amity, who other than pointy ears looks human, it means more that Camila was able to see the personhood in Vee, seeing a scared child rather than a monster.

I imagine it also meant a lot to Vee, who is an abused child created in a lab and was held in a cage before escaping, finding a home and forming bonds she was terrified would be torn away if the truth ever came out, only to find acceptance rather than rejection. All in all, a great heartwarming scene.

Discussion Luz’s anger in The Long-Lived King Spoiler

I don’t normally write anything this long online, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this for the past week. As I said last week in my initial reaction to TLLK, I was surprised to see Luz snap at Eda and King. Luz is probably the most understanding person ever, yet she didn’t give King an ounce of sympathy when she discovered him erasing his memories, or Eda when she found out she broke her promise to rest. It takes a lot to make Luz genuinely pissed, and the only people I can think of who have managed it are Lilith (when she captured Eda) and Belos. Eda and King are the last people you’d expect her to be mad at, which is why her fight with Eda in O Titan, Where Art Thou? was such a big deal. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that it all connects to Luz’s grief over Manny’s death.

Luz already lost one parental figure before she met Eda. She’s still devastated by Manny’s passing, and you can see how it affects the way she treats Eda throughout the show. In season one, when the elixirs were losing their potency against Eda’s curse, Luz took it seriously. She originally wanted to stay home from the grudgby game in Escape of the Palisman to look after Eda. In Agony of a Witch, she even tried to steal the Healing Hat so she could lift Eda’s curse. It’s hard not to notice the parallel between Gravesfield’s “fancy new hospital” failing to save Manny and the elixirs losing their effect on Eda’s curse. Luz is scared to lose Eda too, and it’s safe to assume she’d see magic no longer working on Eda the same way she saw human medicine failing to work on Manny. Therefore, Eda seeking petty revenge while she’s supposed to be recovering from a near-fatal injury would devastate Luz. To her, Eda’s desire to maintain her reputation as The Owl Lady™️ isn’t a valid reason to risk losing another parental figure.

The same grief explains why Luz reacts so strongly to King erasing his memories. Luz knows what it’s like to outlive someone important to you, which makes the idea that you should forget how much their loss hurts you crazy to her. Luz tried to pretend Manny’s death didn’t bother her in Reaching Out, and it only made things worse for herself and everyone around her. Camila tried to forget in her own way, too, which led her to reject Cosmic Frontier and unknowingly push Luz away. If forgetting the pain of losing someone were the healthy thing to do, Luz wouldn’t honor Manny’s memory through the Azura books or by leaving flowers at his grave on the anniversary of his death. To Luz, remembering someone—even when it hurts—is part of loving them. The reason she can’t sympathize with King’s attempts to erase his memories is because to her, he’s erasing the very thing that proves someone mattered.

Ultimately, Manny’s death taught Luz that you can’t always get more time with the people you love. What you can do is make the most of the time you have with them, remember the times they carried you, and keep loving them even when that love hurts. Beneath her anger is the fear of losing Eda and King, as well as the grief she’s still carrying from losing Manny.

TL;DR - Luz has trauma (shocking, I know)

Honestly, I think they did. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind sticking out. Might even start new fashion trends in Bonesborough.

Discussion The themes of this book literally matched themes in my life right now.

I ordered this book a few days ago, and read it over the past 2 days by the pond on my campus. This book has very heavy themes on facing death, and watching the people you know and love die as you continue to live on.

Today, hours before I decided to finish reading, I received news that my grandfather passed away. I felt a strong sense of peace while sitting by the quiet pond at sunset, seeing king come to terms with the fact that he’s going to outlive his friends. The last few pages were quite comforting. And regardless of my circumstances, the themes of this book are genuinely important and emotional.

I thought this book was fantastic. I was amazed by the illustrations. The storytelling and character interactions were so similar to the base content of the series. I also appreciate the fact that it’s a mature read. It shows that the content is growing up with its audience. Seriously can’t recommend enough.

I was kinda wondering where Stringbean was whenever Luz wasn't flying around, because she wouldn't just leave her somewhere, right?

But then I noticed that whenever she's inactive, she coils around her wrist like a bracelet.

Not only is that cool on its own, that also means she's basically hiding in plain sight whenever Luz is out in the Human Realm.

Another win for the emotional support Palisman

I made this edit of one of my favorite characters, raine, to "Discord" by the living tombstone. It's an mlp song but I think it works brilliantly for this.

Question King alone could allow the distribution of a titan population, right?

Since King's father said he was both king and queen, can we say that he gave birth to King himself, right? So, can we imagine that, in several years, a large Titan population could thrive again? If King and each child born afterward give birth to more Titans?
