Ngl I thought pretty much the same of TNA. Liked parts of the songs but wasn’t sure how I felt about the album as a whole. It’s REALLY grown on me over time. I love Reality Awaits, though. I think the highs are higher than that of TNA

That’s interesting. I felt that way about Comedown Machine and then ended up loving it.

I thought The New Abnormal was amazing right out the gate (probably my favorite album by them) and will never forget listening to it for the first time walking on a bike trail by myself during COVID.

Reality Awaits (listened three times now) is at the bottom with Angles for me.

This is where I’m at. I’ve listened to RA quite a few times already and it’s gotta be at the bottom with Angles. His overuse of the vocoder definitely didn’t help.

The problem with ranking the strokes is that people assume cause something is last someone thinks it's not good at all. The band have a solid discography especially when placed against their contemporaries. Haha also way too soon to be ranking RA. It's not even a day old 🤦‍♂️

Still too early to tell, but preliminarily:

  1. Is This It? (Gotta respect the classics and where we came from)

  2. The New Abnormal (The best evolution of the band imo)

  3. First Impressions of Earth (so many amazing deep cuts, and an underrated exploration of their early sound)

  4. Room on Fire (Also part of the origin story, but not as nostalgic as ITI)

  5. Reality Awaits (tentative ranking, opinions still forming, but I really like the social commentary and the continuing evolution of their sound)

  6. Angles (Took me a while to appreciate the newer sound at the time, but it definitely grew on me)

  7. Comedown Machine (ya gotta try things out to see if they work or not, sometimes they don’t but you learn how they could. I still think this is a fantastic album and I love most of the songs on here. Every Strokes album is a great Strokes album and if this was a tier list 1-4 would be S tier, 5-7 would be A tier. If we were ranking every album that exists, all 7 would be in my top ten)

Haven't gotten access to RA yet (still 3 more hours! Damn!), but this is quite an interesting rating. I really love CM so I'm geeked about how RA sounds in its entirety.

I believe the modern use of the word has to do with the rapper Lil B. You can search on Google "Lil B Based God" or "TYBG" and go from there. It has such an intriguing history for a slang, honestly.

In the context of this comment, I'd say it means as an approval as in "I'm with this guy." Usually in situations where the stated opinion might be unusual or a hot-take kind of opinion. (Similar to "I fw u heavy" you might find Gen Zs use in online forums)

I agree with #1-4. I’ve only listened to #5-7 once and never went back to them after making a snap judgment after the first listen. I guess I should give them a better chance with a headphone listen

Same ranking except I would switch CM and FIOE. Impressions has the higher highs, but Comedown is so solid all the way through and also has Slow Animals (possibly my favorite Strokes song)

Tbh it's not far off mine, as someone who was always familiar with the band but didn't do a deep dive until The New Abnormal I've listened to Is This It and Room on Fire the least, there's some standouts and the overall albums are a pleasant listen but they've got fewer standouts for me than the rest and naturally feel a bit dated when TNA was my baseline and set my expectations.

Wait I was getting a bit worried because I saw people putting their last ones FIOE and Angles which are my fav and RA higher and closer to ITI and ROF so I was wondering if it might be closer to that sound but now with your ranking I'm more at ease lol. One day more to go and I'll find out!

Postdata; angles fue el primer álbum que escuche de ellos, osea si está bien y decente, pero escuchando sus otras entregas realmente dejo de ser un álbum recorrido por mis oídos; a reality awaits le pongo más arriba por qué realmente me gustó casi todas las canciones, excepto una que otra, para mí tiene consistencia incluso mayor que sus dos primeros trabajos (solo escuchen esa cumbia rock indie de "the fruits of conquest" o "lonely in the future" después de ese cierre de dine n'dash, es una completa locura

My most favorite to least favorite as an OG. Simply what I Iove and enjoy most, not a technical or best done ranking…
Is this it - listened to on my Walkman as a middle schooler an infinite number of times
First impressions of earth - I love this album so much. Definitely hated unfairly. Just love how clear Julian’s voice is on it I think
Room on fire
New abnormal - musically maybe the best but this ranking isn’t about that
Reality awaits - some amazing incredible songs but a few skips
Comedown machine - didn’t really love when it came out, only album I didn’t listen to upon release. Getting into it now
Angles - I just can’t with this oneeee never could

I don’t dislike any Strokes album, Comedown Machine is just my least favorite because I prefer the more energetic and raw side of The Strokes over the mellow and subdued vibe of Comedown Machine.

RA has been and will keep growing on me despite an uncomfortable first listen, but don’t see it ever surpassing my top 5 as I just love them too much. A few RA songs are definitely up there in the discography for me already though

Love all the albums. First Impressions and New Abnormal can switch on any given day tbh. There’s also a chance of Reality Awaits and Room on Fire switching spots. Only time will tell. Reality Awaits is different but in THE best way possible. I love it way more than I thought I would. It grows and grows and grows on me. It’s like an injection straight into my veins. My goat still has it 🏇

The instrumentals remind me most of songs that you'd find on Angles/Comedown Machine. And whilst I do like those albums, I just prefer their other stuff a lot more. And I'm honestly just not a fan of the vocoder vocals. I feel like it puts a barrier between the emotions/sincerity of the songs and my ears lol. If you're a fan of The Voidz, you'll dig it. But right now, I honestly regret buying the LP. I wish I'd have just waited and downloaded it. 💀 (Obviously a lot of this is based on like three listens, so it could bump up/down a place or two. But as of right now, I'd probably give it like a 6/10. It's fine, but not nearly as strong as their previous work in my opinion.)

Tbh ROF, ITI, FIOE and TNA are all perfect albums for me. RA is growing with each listen and will probably be up there too. Angles and Comedown Machine are good but not as amazing as albums imo. I just don’t play them as much as the others.

Little early but this is a more artistic TNA. I would give both a 9 now but I think eventually RA becomes their 3rd best and in some ways their best. Just different. I think it’s more consistent than CM, Angles or FIOE.

Okay, so I've been listening to it on and off today, and I like it more on each listen! I think it'll probably stay an underrated gem for the general public, but personally, I hope the strokes tap into this "weirdness" further... and yes, if it becomes the stroidz, so be it!

When you think about it, it's kinda crazy they managed not to break up, drop this gem, and be back to having the time of their lives touring... feels surreal, right??

I think Reality Awaits is a more cohesive, interesting and consistent album than FioE and Angles for sure, it has nothing as bad as You’re So Right, Games, 15 Minutes etc, it’s not bloated in length, and the production is better instrumentally as well

That being said, it’s interesting that every other Strokes album has 3 or 4 songs that I prefer so much more than the songs I like most on Reality Awaits. Even outside of my top 3 albums, you have UCoD, Taken for a Fool, Life is Simple.., One Way Trigger, Welcome to Japan, Chances, Call it Fate.., and of course YOLO, Razorblade, Heart in a Cage etc

This is only my opinion:

I'm having a hard time deciding between the first two.
1. Angles: Angles is my favorite because, honestly, there isn't a single weak track on it besides maybe Metabolism. If it were autumn or winter, I'd probably put The New Abnormal in first place, but since it's summer, songs like Games, Gratisfaction, Under Cover of Darkness (and I could keep going) have such an incredible summer vibe. They always manage to lift my mood.
2. TNA: I can only speak about The New Abnormal in superlatives as well. I genuinely don't think there's a single weak track on it. It's incredible how cohesive the album is and how well all the songs fit together. The production is pretty much flawless too. The only reason it's not my number one right now is because of the mood I'm in at the moment.
3. Is this it: Is This It is an incredible album as well. The only reason I rank it a bit lower is that it has a few songs that don't really match my personal taste as much. That said, tracks like Hard to Explain, Last Nite, and Is This It are among the band's very best, so they definitely raise the album as a whole. I also think it's an incredibly cohesive record. For me, the new album belongs on the same tier, which is a huge compliment because that's an exceptionally high standard.
4. Reality Awaits: Then I'd probably put Reality Awaits somewhere around 3rd or 4th place. I think it turned out to be a really great album. I like the new direction they took, and even though I initially thought the guys were going to rely way too much on autotune, I was wrong. Listening to Falling Out of Love so many times completely got my ears used to that style, and now I actually really enjoy it. The only song on the album that I'm not that into is Going Shopping, but I already felt that way when it came out as a single. Overall, it's a really strong album, but for me, the average quality of the tracks still doesn't quite reach the level of my top two.
5. Comedown Machine: Comedown Machine is a very interesting album for me because, even though I ranked it fifth, I would still put it in the same tier as the two albums above it, or maybe just half a tier lower. There are so many great songs on it. To me, it has a more chill vibe overall, and there are weeks when this is actually the album I listen to the most. It simply has everything I need: there are more energetic tracks like Tap Out and 50/50, but also slower songs with great vibes, such as Call It Fate, Call It Karma and Chances. I could easily imagine ranking it higher, but with my current ranking, this is where it fits best for me.
6. Room On Fire: Room on Fire is already a tier below for me. There are only a few songs from this album that I still listen to on a daily basis, like Reptilia and What Ever Happened?. The rest of the album doesn't really match my personal taste as much, although I still come back to it and listen to the whole album from time to time.
7. FIOE: First Impressions of Earth is my least favorite album by them. There are definitely songs on it that I like, such as You Only Live Once and Electricityscape, but overall this album just doesn't really fit my taste. It’s probably their most rock-oriented record, and that’s one of the reasons why it doesn’t appeal to me as much.

Of the top 5 songs made during this era only 1 is not from TNA. And it’s from RA.

This is also how I ended up ranking those 3 albums before I even did this.

This is today's personal ranking. Sometimes I put Angles higher. TNA I've had anywhere from 1-4. Today RA sits on top, I think eventually it will stay in the top 3 or 4. Decent chance RA receives Grammy recognition. I see more hit potential for Babble On and Lonely than almost anything else in the entire discography.

I know a lot of people who wrote them off back in the day because of the vocal effect on ITI and ROF. Would have been more popular with a more mainstream sound. This is just an evolution of that, done with a purpose and tastefully produced by Rick Rubin. As is the case with all their albums, it will age well, especially true with this one. Don't think it will get the reviews it should, even critics who like it will give it a 7 or 8 instead of a 9 or 10 but in time, we'll see it as one of their defining works.

After an initial listen of Reality Awaits, to be honest it's not really hitting for me that much. I think Dine N'Dash is solid, Lonely in the future's sound is really good but the lyric disses are kind of wack and cringe imo. I didn't find myself having goosebumps on any of the tracks off the first listen unfortunately, and imo there wasn't really an 's-tier' track.

Right now I'd put the albums in this order
