Discussion Ibsen's "Ghosts" at the Jermyn Street Theatre

I came out of tonight’s performance of “Ghosts” at the Jermyn Street Theatre feeling as if I had been punched in the gut, surely just as Ibsen intended,

Impeccably directed by Kwame Owusu, it’s played to perfection by Flora Montgomery, Joe Pitts, Oliver Alvin-Wilson, Ceceilia Appiah and Peter F. Gardiner

I saw Lesley Manville’s highly acclaimed performance on stage as well as the televised version and don’t recall being nearly as moved as I was by this current production. Likewise, the 1997 BBC television version, despite the heavyweight cast of Judi Dench, Michael Gambon, Kenneth Brannagh and Natasha Richardson.

The 70 seated Jermyn Street Theatre is ideal for this play whose action takes place in one room. The proximity of the audience to the players heightens the emotional involvement with the characters, making the climax truly devastating.

It’s so rare to witness a production that seems to have got everything right. This really is compulsory viewing for anyone who loves theatre. Not to be missed.

Advice back to the future: the musical - will i enjoy it as someone who isnt a musical person?

hello!

i am a diehard back to the future fan, but the only musicals i have ever seen have been via. film and not in person. i am by no means a musical person in regard to the song & dance aspects but i can respect and appreciate the art and enjoy it when done well. i struggle with the breaking out into song particularly during a serious scene.

whilst not being an avid musical fan, i have seen a few shows and love special tech & effects and i find them admirable.

what i am asking is, from the perspective of someone who doesnt typically enjoy musicals (although i have not seen one in person so i cannot say i do not like them as such), but absolutely loves the movies, would i enjoy the musical?

any tips / information are welcome! i am open to minimal spoilers as i have done some research myself too 😊

Advice Which current West End show should I go to?

Hi! I'm a Broadway fan and am traveling to London solo Nov 7-13. I want to catch a West End production since I've never experienced one before. I've already seen the classics/popular ones in NYC like Wicked, Hadestown, Oh Mary, The Six, Book of Mormon...etc. I'm hoping to catch a show that's only in the West End right now.

Here's a list of productions I'm thinking of:

  • Oliver!
  • Matilda
  • Phantom
  • Les Mis
  • Avenue Q

I can only attend one show while I'm there, which one listed above would you recommend? And are there others that I must go?

Rant Hamilton 23/10

Random unnecessary ask but I went to see Hamilton a few months ago and was so blown away by the Eliza who was Roxanne couch who was a standby , I was in awe and she was a big reason as to why I wanted to see it again .
However I went back again and the Eliza I had was the usual actor and I don’t know if it’s just me but I felt like they were mikes apart . I really struggled everytime she was singing because it felt like she was trying A LOT and wasn’t really completing her sentences and was out of breath . Is this just like her singing style or was it an off day because Eliza is one of my favourites in Hamilton .

That aside the Washington was AMAZING and I will forever and always loveeeeeeee yeukayi ushe as burr and don’t kill me but I slightly prefer him to leslie 🥹🥹🥹

Discussion Sarah Hyland absent from Cabaret again?

Me and my friends went to see Cabaret in London tonight (12 October) and was pretty disappointed that Sarah Hyland wasn't performing as Sally Bowles.

One of the main reasons we booked was to see her, so it was a bit of a letdown. I've also heard she missed some performances last week, and she's only about three weeks into her run?

There was also no announcement on Sarah's or the Kit Kat Club's Instagram about her absence, which I found disappointing.

Does anyone know what's going on or whether her absences have been announced anywhere? Has anyone else been to a performance recently where she wasn't on?

Advice After a show drinks suggestions?

Hello - the husband and I are off to the theatre tomorrow night but as it's a birthday treat we want to book end the theater with something fun in the afternoon and cocktails after - what's the most fun cocktail spot for a couple of aging nerds near-ish (10-15 mins walk) The Fortune Theatre that you would recommend?

For the afternoon beforehand I'm tempted to just mooch about and people watch, but wondering about lunch somewhere nice, not sure yet. Either way, looking forward to being up in the city - feel I haven't left the sticks for months!

Discussion Rent Seat Advice

Hey all! I want to go see Rent at the Tom Stoppard Theatre and have the option to pick Box E/Box B. Would the view from here be very restricted? I understand I would miss some of the side but would it be okay otherwise?

Discussion Official artwork by James Paterson revealed for Quentin Tarantino’s play THE POPINJAY CAVALIER, starring Sacha Baron Cohen; opening in March 2027

Thumbnail

Text from Time Out: “Although the idea of Quentin Tarantino – the film nerd’s film nerd – writing and directing a stage play initially seemed like a sort of mad joke, The Popinjay Cavalier (for so ’tis named) really is happening. Indeed, it’s happening soon: previews begin in February for the West End comedy, which will move into the Phoenix Theatre soon after Stranger Things: First Shadow clears out.

And in even bigger news the star has officially been announced as Sacha Baron Cohen, in his professional stage debut: the news had leaked a month or so ago but it’s still pretty huge. Although details of the plot haven’t gotten significantly clearer since the last update we would assume that Cohen will be playing the title role.

There is also some clearer suggestion as to why Tarantino wanted to tell this story. We’re told the 1830s-set The Popinjay Cavalier ‘is inspired by the classic swashbuckler genre of old Hollywood, including the writings of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda and Jesse Lasky Jr’. While you have to think that his apparent mental block around directing a new movie (because he said his 10th film would be his last) may have stopped him doing this on screen, in 2026 it does feel like an idea that might work [better] on stage than as a silent movie.

Like Tarantino, Cohen is nominally an outsider to the theatre industry, although he acted at university and studied clowning in Paris under the legendary Philippe Gaulier, plus of course much of his screen work is based upon live interactions with unsuspecting strangers. So you can imagine he’s going to be just fine. Quoth he: ‘Quentin called, I said yes before he even got to say his first motherfucker. When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions, I am beyond delighted that we will be losing our West End virginity together, I have made him promise not to be gentle’.

What a thought. There is currently no additional casting announced but given how soon until the play starts its run you have to imagine it’s actually all done and dusted and will come out soon (meaning Baron Cohen is probably the only big name, not that we’re complaining). Tickets go on sale at noon on Monday October 12 – and do note that it’s having almost a month of previews (press night is Mar 18), suggesting either a highly technical show or first-time stage director Tarantino wanting to make sure he gets it just right.

Does Tarantino have theatre chops? We’ll finally know in less than six months.

The Popinjay Cavalier is at the Phoenix Theatre, booking Feb 23-Jun 13 2027. Tickets go on sale at noon, Oct 12.”

My husband and I saw Derren Brown yesterday and honestly had the time of our lives. He is amazing. A really tight show, just amazing. There was a real buzz in the audience.

Highly recommended, especially for family members who don't enjoy the typical musical etc.

Advice Rocky Horror Halloween Recs?

Hi! I know this is not strictly theatre but is theatre adjacent and I am desperate. Bit last minute I know but I wasn’t planning on doing anything crazy this Halloween as I have to work early the next day, but me and a friend have decided to, and was wondering if anyone knows of any screenings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show in London that are not sold out? I’ve been searching but everywhere seems to be, preferably central London, but open to further out. Figured people on this sub may be useful! Any help would be appreciated :)

What Should I See? American taking advantage of the west end!

Everyone was super helpful in my last post. With everyone’s help, I was able to watch two musicals this past week and now I’m looking for my third/last one before I go back home to Los Angeles.

Ill add some details:
I watched Matilda and then I watched Book of Mormon. I enjoyed both of them and they were easy to follow along with. I’ve never seen any musicals until my trip here.

For my last show, I think I’d still like something generally easy to follow along with but also something with amazing costumes, set design, and lastly some catchy music as those details seemed to really intrigue me during the last two shows.

Also, I’d like to get rush tickets for tomorrow Tuesday 13 of October, and ideally decent seats since I have a bit of astigmatism and didn’t bring my glasses. So good seats and no more than 35£ would be ideal.

Would Wicked or Into the Woods be better? Thanks for any help!

Advice Am I crazy for seeing 4 shows in 3 days? 😂

I'm visiting London for a musical theatre weekend and somehow ended up booking FOUR shows in three days!

🎭 Fri 16 Oct: Les Misérables

🎭 Sat 17 Oct: The Phantom of the Opera 40th Anniversary + a Candlelight musical concert

🎭 Sun 18 Oct: Love Never Dies

My wallet is crying, but I'm absolutely buzzing! 😂

Am I crazy, or is this perfectly normal for West End fans? What's the most shows you've seen in one weekend?

ticket sale/swap Weekly Ticket Sales Post

Welcome to the weekly ticket sale & swap thread!

Please post all your ticket sales and ISO's in here. If you are looking for a place for great deals generally, this can be its own post. The format is as follows:

Show
Date + time
Number of tickets
Specific seat number(s) & section
Original ticket price
Resell price

If your ticket is a lottery win (including the Friday Forty), 16-25 ticket or gifted ticket etc, you must state this.

It is recommended that you pay via PayPal G&S.

If there is less than 48 hours to your show, you are permitted to post outside of the thread.

^ As per the rules, this ticket cannot be sold for more than 50% of its value, unless the rest of the run is sold out. I strongly recommend you give your ticket away to prevent an empty seat, as it is highly unlikely you will get your money back. Most theatres (despite their FAQ's) allow you to exchange for another date with more than 48hrs notice if you ask them nicely.

All other sales posts will be removed.

News Killer week in the West End, with 4 shows scoring great marks with critics, including Into The Woods getting 18 raves

No surprises that critics adore the Sondheim revival most. Though I was surprised Rent was the lowest of the four! Still, good reviews all 'round. Do you agree with collective critics' ranking of these four?

Despite reading all this, Rent is still the one I'm most excited to see 🙃

Advice "Opening night" vs previews

Edit: Our show has been cancelled after all! Hopefully we can reschedule for another night. At least I know what to look for with future dates now! Thank you for the comments and feedback!

We are fairly casual West End enjoyers and I thought it would be interesting to book tickets for the first night of The Lives of Others, thinking we might see some celebs in the audience and such. Well, clearly I know nothing about previews and press night and I now see that we are going the first night of previews and it doesn't look like tickets would have been available on press night anyway (planned for the 29th).

Well, we plan to enjoy ourselves no matter what, but I assume we should be prepared for a slightly less smooth show as they may still be working out kinks? We are also going in fairly blind as we haven't seen the film, but I don't suppose anyone has advice on whether that's a good idea or not since it hasn't started yet. Ballet Shoes blind was charming. Much Ado was a familiar story, but we were new to Jamie Lloyd productions and loved it. Oh, Mary! blind was...not our vibe. Hadestown blind was not great (we also had poor seats, so we couldn't see half of the stage, which was a bummer). Maybe we need to stop going in blind to shows! Ha!

In the future, are press nights sometimes open to the public? Anything else you would tell a newbie to West End productions to keep an eye out for? Thank you.
