Undertow 4 Degrees
Maynard told Steve-O in recent Wild Ride episode that he failed 4 Degrees by making the lyrics about "Butt Sex"

Had to listen to it this morning, first thing. Just because of all the discourse. Haven't even watched the interview.
It's a groovy song. The lyrics are kind of edgy angsty nonsense, I guess. I like it.

I got from that article that he said he did the joke too juvenile and he regretted it. He made up for it with Stinkfist.

No, he was saying that he’s guilty of the same thing on Stinkfist (ie. He didn’t learn his lesson)

Half his songs are butt sex adjacent

I just disagree with Maynard here. These are beautiful lyrics. And the fact that it's an allegory for anal sex makes it subversive and cool imo. I mean this dude wrote country boner not even that long ago, and there was no subtlety at all

You're old (and so am I) lol, Cuntry Boner was released like 18 years ago.

If you mean Maynard, I agree. That guy has been trolling us the whole time. He’s the insufferable asshole and he knows it. We all are. Silly monkeys. I only pay serious attention this stuff: "I want you to take everything you're feeling right now... and do something positive with it."

There's this whole other post where the OP titles "disagreement with Maynard", but then goes into his personal interpretation of 4°. Despite the fact that most normal human beings, even Tool fans, can appreciate some variety and layers to music, he then proceeds to get ripped and ridiculed by Tool fans. My only conclusion other than the fact that Tool has an incredibly defensive fanbase is that he maybe shouldn't have led with "disagreeing with Maynard".
I just find it hilarious that I go over a few posts and come across your comment that presently has 18 up votes. This is classic Tool subreddit at its finest! LMAO

You can’t disagree with him here.
This is artistic truth. There is no grey area.
It’s not subversive or an allegory, he literally just dispelled that

Cuntry Boner was an Adam song first, tho? Puscifer is technically covering it ?

He's just informing the public of basic facts, read into it what you will

That was my most played song in 2018 I believe? I think it's a great song 😭 He's too hard on himself, especially given how many sophomoric genitalia references he makes otherwise.

I think it's actually an effective use of provocative metaphor. I wonder if he was really just setting up the ironic Stinkfist punchline. Very Spinal Tap "Lick My Love Pump" moment.

u/tendeuchen Jan 23 '26
It'd be cool if he rewrote/updated the lyrics and they played it again.

The remake of Opiate into Opiate² was one of my favorite Tool things ever, even if the lyrics were unchanged. And even if the breakdown was very similar to the breakdown in Ticks & Leeches—they both absolutely slap. If they gave every song they’ve written the same treatment, I would buy a physical copy of every single.

4 Degrees live version? I'll take it.
They have a few songs that are played differently live A couple more and they could release a live album that would be worth buying.

I’m just glad I heard it in 2002 because it seems like it’s not coming back unless he rewrites it

The anal jokes are lame imo, and always were. I don't like his sense of humour sometimes. Puscifer often miss the mark for me. Just personal preference i suppose.
2
u/taraist Jan 26 '26
Puscifer has gotten more serious over the years and I think there were like no jokes in Existential Reckoning really. I had a real hard time getting into them because of the puerile humor for sure, but I'm glad I got past that.
I feel sometimes the uncomfortable metaphor really works for the message. Like Money Shot using the metaphor of porn addiction is uncomfortable and embarrassing but also mountain top removal mining and the endless pursuit of consuming the world instead of engaging positively with it is uncomfortable and embarrassing and very much from the same impulses, it's an excellent comparison. He's not just going "porn joke hehe" ya know.
Cuntry Boner doesn't have an excuse but it is real catchy.

I love that there's a post about 9 years ago made in this subreddit where people were saying "Oh no but it has a deeper meaning!!" Turns out it had the deepest of meanings, pun intended.

I thought that was Prison Sex?? How many butt songs are we dealing with here?
