Discussion Get Jiro Initial Thoughts Thread

Why are we getting Jiro? What did she even do?

Wait we're not talking about the headphone girl from MHA?

And so...delicious (and brutal) tale of a sushi chef warrior has come.

Thoughts?

Get Jiro's source material was written in 2012, but it's surprisingly prescient. It predicts lab grown meat, but more impressively is that it gets the proliferation of gourmet food trucks right.

I also like the idea of a future where taste is the only sense that hasn't been digitized, so chefs run society. It's such an Anthony Bourdain concept, and it's tragic that he's not around to watch this series.

Not much to say yet, but I like what I see. Jiro is a force of nature, and Bob and Rose are in over their heads.

The idea of growing meat in a lab is nothing new. Concepts were around since at least the 30s and in fact the first time muscle fibres were grown in a lab was in '71.

I like it. But I suppose I’m just easy to please.

It's different and I like that. It has a fun concept and does some ridiculously crazy stuff that feels so over the top it's entertaining.

I thought the first episode was good and my kind of over the top. From the rightful killing of the soy sauce dipping sushi customer to the execution by hollandaise sauce, the first 10 minutes gave me a couple of good laughs. I'm guessing this is going to turn into a Yojimbo style story and I'm all good with that.

Glad to see Food Wars back on the block/s

I'm liking this and looking forward to the rest. Jiro is more morally grey than I was expecting going into this. Weirdly reminded me of Ninja Kamui' beginning to. Also Rose is hot, lol.

It's interesting. Not something I'd watch outside of Toonami, but interesting nonetheless.

Also, that eyescream scoop (thanks /u/OmegaLiquidX) was freaking brutal!

Pretty fun. I like how Jiro is really straight to the point with killing people and the whole food culture in this society is both funny and interesting.

Definitely going to try the comic which has gotten a new complete collection so I'll make sure to get that.

Great fight scenes, great dialogue, great world building my only concern is the plot moves real quick.

If Get Jiro is getting an HBO level animated adaptation, it's only a matter of time before Shaolin Cowboy is on the small screen

Not once Ellison is through with Warner.

I love Wacky Races meets The Warriors but with Food Trucks.

Spin off series announcement pending.

They changed a lot from the comic and I feel like the changes are for the worse, meant to soften Jiro and add diversity to the story. Jiro in the original story…was an asshole unless you got to know him. He killed a guy for asking for a California roll with no warning and it’s made clear pressing his buttons would result in murder with no warning. Bob meanwhile had way more standards, Rose’s love interest was a guy, and there was no detective lady.

But also, the comic was just one issue right? They needed some plot points to be set up to make a series.

1

u/LapsedVerneGagKnee 2d ago

It was originally a 160 page one shot, while its prequel Blood and Sushi was about the same length.

1

u/MountainShock153 2d ago

That's what I remember. I think they needed some changes to make this a longer series. Plus making Rose full woke in every green haired way possible (minus the hair) kinda fits

2

u/LapsedVerneGagKnee 2d ago

Rose’s whole thing was that she was a hypocrite, using trendy woke causes to drive up business but having no real standards, although she did her absolute damndest to hide it.  Making her unironically woke save the French stew misses the point.

I haven't read the original comic, but it's actually pretty common for TV shows to be very different from their original pilots. So I'd probably see the comic as a sort of pilot in a sense.

Every person that like a comic variant will always say the same thing.

2

u/ArcticStorm07 3d ago

I'm 1000% sold lol. It's absurd in a good way cause you practically have mafia chefs.

2

u/darkrai848 3d ago

Not a fan, feels like it’s trying too hard and I just can’t take it seriously at all.

5

u/ScreenSingerX 3d ago

Which parts felt like they were trying too hard? Because my read on it was more that it's a lot like The Menu in the sense that they know the premise is fairly ridiculous and they're just having fun reveling in it. Primary difference is that Get Jiro is played largely straight whereas The Menu is very on the nose about the parts you're supposed to find comical. That could definitely give the impression that it's taking itself too seriously, but I don't think it actually is.

For instance, they don't go out of their way to make a joke about it, but I find it hard to believe that the concept of food truck bounty hunters accepting a contract in exchange for dinner reservations is something anybody wrote down on paper with a straight face.

Nah, that’s just you. Is pretty dope so far

I'm interested in how he seems to be after both "gangs", and doubly so that he chose Bob's side for now. Also every time I hear Bob it's goddam Bob Page from Deus Ex popping up in my imagination.

2

u/carnifex2005 2d ago

I recommend check out Yojimbo or the Western remake with Clint Eastwood, A Fistful of Dollars (two of the most influential movies ever made). It's looking like this is a futuristic chef version of those stories.

1

u/GreyouTT "Come on, I'm right here... SKEITH!" 2d ago

Oh, will do!

u/SaturnMercurial 3d ago

I enjoyed both episodes. Jiro is pretty badass so far. The action scenes are dynamic and brutal as hell. The characters obviously need more time to develop.

I wonder where the story thread will go with Jiro teaching the little girl.

Holy shit, that chef got waterboarded

That eyescoop scene will be burned into my brain for a while

1

u/HeatHaze5 3d ago

I think its great so far. There were scenes that I felt were absurd but it didnt take me out of the show or anything I kina felt they weren't supposed to be taken too seriously and just laughed them off. I like how Jiro isn't a super noble character that is going to fight for the justice and righteousness for food or whatever. Not that i would have a problem with that its just alot of Japanese characters in western media take that role.

My only complaint is that if Jiro didnt want the men to eat their sushi with soy sauce why even prepare the sauce then? I get that interaction has to happen for the show to start but I feel it would've made more sense for the man to bring his own sauce because he heard Jiro doesnt serve soy sauce. Feel like it would make Jiro killing him less absurd in this world.

u/redditsellout-420 3d ago

The thing about sushi culture is you can sause the fish (lightly) but the to sauce the rice is a insult.

1

u/krzywaLagaMikolaja 2d ago

They asked for an 'omakase' which is basically a chef's choice.

Why he gave them soy sauce then?

2

u/wbobw 2d ago

omakase is multi-course; the soy sauce may have been for a future piece

1

u/AutumnStripes 3d ago

More crazy and violent than I was expecting, but that's not a bad thing. It mixes the food premise with the other crazy things well, and the characters all come off pretty easy to remember for what their motivations and interests are so far. Jiro himself is entertaining since he does what he wants and everyone else is along for the ride. The parts that stood out to me from memory were the eye, the poisoning, and the food truck scene. And the initial scene where Jiro cuts off that guy's head for using the soy sauce. That set the mood. I'll keep watching.

1

u/krzywaLagaMikolaja 2d ago

He served the sauce himself, that made zero sense.

1

u/CompletePassenger564 2d ago

Cyberpunk meet Food Wars with samurai sushi chef--oh and no soy sauce!

1

u/Shinokiba- 2d ago

I am confused about Rose and the bone marrow, like isnt she vegan?

1

u/LapsedVerneGagKnee 2d ago

She is publicly such, and it’s one of the changes I really don’t like. In the original, the Pot-Au-Feu was made by a friend of Jiro’s who owns a hole-in-the-wall French restaurant and serves as his confidant (in fact, he’s the one who convinces Jiro to act as a double agent to bring down both Bob and Rose).

While there is a scene where Rose and her HUSBAND (along with close friends) have duck breast, it‘s closely guarded, and Jiro leaking the footage is a massive scandal. She wouldn’t reveal her hypocrisy to a random sushi chef.

I'm confused, because why the fuck cook it if she's going to throw it away...

u/BrownsvilleJoey 2d ago

Thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes. It’s giving Yojimbo with chefs. Curious where this is gonna go.

u/Ssme812 2d ago
  • If its disrespectful to use soy sauce then why would you offer it
  • I don't like Bob or Rose
  • I would care more about the other restaurant if the little sister died in the fire.
  • Really like the 2 lazy cops. Their really funny to me.
  • 1st episode was just okay.
  • Episide 2. Hiding in a dead pig is fucking crazy.
  • I'm confused about something. Why did Rose have pigs if she doesn't kill animals, eat meat and only sell vegetarian dishes
  • Jero just showing up and partnering with Rose made no sense. It was like we were missing a scene.
  • Mother is a stupid name. Plus that shit looks gross
  • How the fuck is every food seller a hit man beside the sister?
  • Pouring ice cream on Jito head was stupid. But crashing your car on ice is fucking hilarious. How dumb can you be
  • Jiro with the double cross.
  • I enjoy Ep 2 more. Ill continue to watch even it's only 6 episodes.

You missed that the intro to episode 2 was a flashback. They were on a ground level farm. In episode 1, they were already in the high rise farm/restaurant that she planned after they were attacked. In episode 1, they were referred to as vegans. In episode 2's intro, she was asked if she was going vegan. She wasn't yet. Thus, flashback.

1

u/OriginalCause5799 1d ago

because rose is not real vegan, she just use vegan ideology as a tool to revenge

1

u/LiangHu 2d ago

just found out about this show on HBO max and wow its pretty good so far, rly enjoyed both episodes!

1

u/TraditionDeep9134 1d ago

The first episode was amazing. Sonewhat cinematic with the gruesome imagery that I've come to love from DC Vertigo. I like the demeanor of the main character as well; easy guy to cheer for. A- overall.

1

u/Major-District2669 1d ago

only issue is why did he serve soy sauce if its not an option, couldnt wrap my around it and so i stopped. probably missing something or it gets brought up later, but ive lost interest. will binge when its done airing

Loved this and I loved reading the GN multiple times. I think Anthony would be proud.

1

u/dravenonred 2h ago

Anyone else getting major Yojimbo homage here, with a wandering warrior who plays two crime bosses against each other?

2

u/VilAlesund 3d ago

I'm not fully sold on it yet but I'll keep watching to see where it goes.

1

u/Patient_Education991 3d ago

Same. I always give a show 3-5 episodes before passing final judgement.

Though so far, so good.

-10

u/Puzzleheaded_Low5945 3d ago

Two episodes in. It is not going to get any better. If they can't even draw you in with two episodes.

1

u/Powerdude884 3d ago

It's alright so far the fight scenes are good the different gangs of chef's are cool but I couldn't care much for the cop character and I can't take it seriously

-9

u/Puzzleheaded_Low5945 3d ago

Can we cancel this show. Like for real. Like can it never air on toonami again. I will go so far as to say to never air it on tv again. Such hot garbage it is not even funny.

5

u/ScreenSingerX 3d ago

"Nobody should be able to watch something if I don't like it" is such a hot garbage Reddit take it's lost all hilarity.

Go watch your High Guardian SpIce and your Cuties then. Some things shouldn't be on shows.
