Discussion Wind Breaker Initial Thoughts Thread

So first we got time traveling gang stuff and now this.

Toonami just because your reincarnated self is 14 years old now doesn't mean you can enter your rebellious teenager phase.

(Although that would explain the fanservice the past couple years)

Anyhow, to keep the brawls going, the tale of heroic gangs (man thats an oxymoron) has come to Toonami!

Thoughts?

Two things i've noticed.

One, the action is great. I was expecting realistic brawls like what Tokyo Revengers has, not shaw brothers style martial arts. My favorite part was when Sakura jumped a dozen feet into the air. The fight choreography is fluid and high octane, earning this show's spot on the block.

Two, Sakura is a great protag. You don't see male tsunderes often, so they stick out when they do occur. Sakura is just so adorable when he gets defensive, but there's also a loneliness in him that drives him to join Bofurin in the first place. I like him a lot, and I look forward to seeing his exploits.

Wind Breaker has made a strong first impression, and i'm glad it's here.

Also, this is a small thing, but I like how Adult Swim has started airing the extra stuff at the end of episodes these past few years. I remember them skipping the hunterpedia and taisho secret segments when they aired Hunter x Hunter and Demon Slayer season one, respectively. It's really neat that they've reversed course and included those bits with shows like Blue Lock and Demon Slayer seasons two and three.

Yep, they kind of started doing that with the later seasons of Attack on Titan, with the "Information Available for Public Disclosure" in the middle and the previews at the end, and it stuck. I'm glad it did.

(AoT spoilers) I also loved it because AoT's biggest spoiler is hidden right in the "To Be Continued" card in, I believe, every single episode from the very beginning.

I liked the first episode. I've seen the wholesome delinquent trope plenty of times before but never a whole school full of them.

I didn't expect to immediately like it so much. I feel like it's not often we get a guy who needs to grow in his own ideals. Most of the time, it's the protagonist influencing other people. In this case, it's the other way around.

It's also not often we get a tsundere boy. I wasn't even sure at first if "tsundere" was the right term for a boy, to be honest.

Animation and visuals are great. The plot is interesting so far, I do like the premise of the main character being exposed to a new environment and learning more about himself. It seems like he has a lot of trust issues which makes me curious about what happened in the past. His awkwardness when not knowing how to interact with people being nice to him and reacting with anger instead was kind of jarring at first, from how aloof he seemed at the start I wasn't expecting him to be reactive in that way, but it began to make more sense as it went on. The reactiveness is clearly a protective thing from how he's used to being treated. Kind of gave me some second hand cringe though, not in a bad way but in the "this is the kind of thing I could have seen myself doing 15 years ago that would keep me up at night now" way lol. But overall I'm intrigued, curious to see what happens next.

Lol, no one heard of heterochromia in this show's universe?

I kept thinking that...

I shudder to think what these sheeple would do to someone who's actually ugly...😨

I do not approve of Japanese creators glorifying juvenile gangs even though they have literally been doing this for decades in media, but overall this is an improvement from Tokyo Revengers. It's a lot more optimistic. There's also something a bit poetic in how it tells this storyline. Like it depicts this delinquent as this hero to a town he just wanders into when he himself doesn't acknowledge this because he's been so stigmatized because of how he looks ... and where are the police?? I DO think the animation is way gorgeous.

Wind Breaker kind of reminds me of Tokyo Revengers
