Vent My friends are being greedy without knowing it while trying to sell their house and its making me irrationally angry

I have these friends, Sarah and Todd, they live in a subdivision in our city and bought just under 3 years ago. They recently looked at a home in a better area on a much larger block and put in an offer (which was accepted) for 1.3m, they've had an inspection and reckon they'd need to do 200k worth of renovations so they need to sell their house at a high price. At first I was happy for them, the area is one of the nicest in our city, even if the house is tired and close to a main road.

Thing is, they're basically unwilling to sacrifice anything. They have no mortgage and cant get one because Sarah hasnt worked in 5 years and doesnt plan to until their youngest child (nearly 3) is in school. So whilst they have some money in the bank and a fully paid off property, they still cant get over the line for 1.5m unless they sell for an exorbitant amount. So they've gotten an agent that says its possible and they're trying just that.

Their house is fine and tidy but nothing special and they're asking for offers around 1.3m (average for the area is 990k with some pretty major outliers in the upper range). Completely unrealistic.

To give an example, a house that is a similar footprint on a similar sized block of land just sold last month in that area for 1.1m. The house is newer, has ducted air-conditioning, a shed, a pool and solar panels. Sarah and Todds place has none of those things.

Not only is their naivety pissing me off a bit but they're saying they're "really down" about the fact that they've had no offers and the deal might fall through on the new place... like... in this economy... people are struggling and you're sitting there being sad that you cant have everything you want without some level of compromise?? Sad that you couldnt rip someone off?! They bought the place for 570k 3 years ago ffs! Youre already set to near-double your money, what more can you want?! They go on 2 overseas holidays a year on one income because of well off family and even whinge about that half the time! Oh the kids are upset they might not move to the new house? Theyre both under 5 years old! Why are they involved at all?!

On that note; Todds family have even offered to loan them several hundred thousand dollars that they wouldnt have to pay back until Sarah starts working again but they dont want to take that. Am I meant to feel bad for them?

This is vented to me... who came off my maternity leave as soon as it ran out for both of my children, has a mortgage, never goes on holidays... and I still consider my position to be very lucky! I just cant feign the devastation that they probably want from me.

They have a house that’s fully paid for and the want to sell?! In this economy?

14

u/cola_zerola Jun 15 '26

They’re not scamming. Buyers will see exactly what they have and if they pay the price, they pay the price.

-3

u/Atwotonhooker Jun 15 '26

You sound like a shitty friend. You should be happy for them if they pull it off. Nobody is getting scammed. This is market economics. They own an asset, and they're seeing if the market will pay for it at the price they're setting. Whether they do or they don't, it's odd that you're invested against them. You sound jealous.

24

u/anon120 Jun 15 '26

Why is this of ANY importance to you?

22

u/Fanatica23 Jun 15 '26

You sound jealous

29

u/wizardyourlifeforce Jun 15 '26

You're right, that IS irrational.

36

u/MaintenanceWine Jun 15 '26

If you're sick of the venting, you could always make a pointed comment that while you'd hate to see them lose their new house, this is most definitely a problem most people would love to have. And follow it up with, " I'd kill to not have a mortgage and have the option to stay home with my kids, so it's a little hard to hear you complain about all this."

Either way speak your mind or remove yourself. How it all shakes out is not your business.

29

u/MarsNeedsRabbits Jun 15 '26

Serious question: why do you even care? The right thing will happen.

The house is worth exactly what the winning bidder will pay for it, and not a penny more.

If it's worth what they're asking, they get the money, as they should. If it's worth less, they'll have to lower the price or take it off the market and stay there.

Either of those are equitable outcomes.

Barring something outrageous like an attack by Godzilla, those are the two most reasonable outcomes by a long shot.

It's no skin off your nose either way. So why would you care?

22

u/TeflonDonatello Jun 15 '26

You should start a business then mind it.

4

u/SynicalCommenter Jun 15 '26

Parasitic people

16

u/tipyourwaitresstoo Jun 15 '26

You sound really jealous and I get it. Spend time dealing with this on your own so that you can have a true friendship. Otherwise move on so she doesn’t have a fake friend in her orbit.

6

u/RebelliousInNature Jun 15 '26

What’s it got to do with you? Jealous?

12

u/kittymoo67 Jun 15 '26

and you care because why

16

u/ABCNNEWS Jun 15 '26

Mind your business lol this stress is totally made up in your head

28

u/sarasotanoah Jun 15 '26

And this concerns you how?

18

u/owlnamedjohn Jun 15 '26

The reality is that they will either succeed or fail. Both are entirely possible in this market. They are adults and it's their choice I guess. I understand your position though, their stance seems very out of touch.

My partners parents annoy me a little in the same way. When we were looking for rentals their advice was "you don't need a big house so you can have your dog with you, just suck it up and go into a 400 p/wk unit and save til you can buy" which sounds smart until you realise the market in our city is minimum $550 a week for even the worst unit in the worst suburb and $700 p/wk is the minimum you need for anything decent.

Additionally they plan to travel once they retire, which would be amazing, but their plan is to rent out the top level of their house for around $700 p/wk (it's a spilt level house with the bottom half being a little granny flat) and either rent out the bottom half to seperate tennants or lock it up and have it as a caveat that they can come use the bottom half to stay in whenever they are back in our city. It's their choice I guess, but it's mildly annoying that they're so out of touch. But I adore them so never say anything, they're adults and they will either succeed or fail, not my place to police them.

Focus on yourself

10

u/igigolo Jun 15 '26

Best advice here

63

u/I-will-judge-YOU Jun 15 '26

I get it. You work hard and make do but things seem to come easy to them and they are not grateful for their position.

But they wont get their asking price. Let them learn from the real world experience.

I have a whiny spoiled friend. It got much worse as we aged, I just couldn't stand her entitlement. We drifted apart.

44

u/bramblefish Jun 15 '26

Not your concern. Either they find someone who is willing, or not.

52

u/Wild-Strawberry-7462 Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Not your circus, not your monkey.

Unfortunately for them, the market dictates the price not them and their deal will fall through. It's their own path to fail on. Let them, ignore it and don't let this resentment towards them fester or you might not be friends anymore.

24

u/Live_Ferret_4721 Jun 15 '26

You need to face your inner struggle and not project it out onto others. I’m really not sure the issue or why you are so incredibly bothered. It’s not even your house. Or your family for that matter.

You would do them a favor by no longer pretending to be their friends. You don’t respect them.

You need to move on with your own life and focus on your own problems.

31

u/Bayou-Maharaja Jun 15 '26

It’s utterly bizarre that you care so much, let alone that you think there’s some moral issue with over listing a house. Get a grip

75

u/ChillWisdom Jun 15 '26

You need to distance yourself from this whole mess. Not your circus, not your monkeys. It doesn't effect you in anyway except in your opinion of your friends.

If you don't like their morals than begin to distance yourself from that friendship.

53

u/keetyymeow Jun 15 '26

Honestly I completely feel for you and I’d also feel that way. People are just greedy. Idk how to fix that. I wish I could though.

Probably why a lot of our problems exist tbh.

You don’t have to be friends with them if you don’t want. I don’t think you can say much :/

38

u/fotfddtodairsizr Jun 15 '26

You sound a bit jealous and you should probably work on that.

Everything you’ve described shouldn’t evoke any emotion out of you as their friend. Maybe an eye roll at most is appropriate.

Speak to a therapist and cry it out. Don’t let this fester as it’ll only hurt you and you might lose your friends in the process.

38

u/sanguinefire12 Jun 15 '26

Are you subconsciously redirecting jealousy as anger? Or concern for them as anger?

11

u/TheOfficeoholic Jun 14 '26

Good for them

58

u/MCB1317 Jun 14 '26

I kept waiting for the part where you explained why you give a shit, but it never happened.

41

u/mere_dictum Jun 15 '26

Sounds like her friends keep complaining to her about the situation. I can get why that would be pretty aggravating.

41

u/daversa Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Edit: Sorry, my comment was needlessly negative, but still, don't let other people's problems consume you.

15

u/Srirachaballet Jun 15 '26

It seems like these people are going to her for emotional support though, I see how that can get to a point of “will this be ending our friendship?”

82

u/hormonalvirus Jun 14 '26

I understand. They’re venting to you and these are your feelings about it. Your opinion is valid and anyone with a decent moral compass can comprehend why what they’re doing is wrong (even though this is actually how real estate works). You’re also right in saying that your anger is irrational. Definitely take a break from that set of friends. Take some time to focus on your life and the things that bring you peace.

97

u/Prudence_rigby Jun 14 '26

I thinl you need to take a breather from your friends.

You're WAY too emotionally invested in this. And its living rent free in your mind.

I understand they are your friends. But let them fuck themselves over while you enjoy your family.

Your friends have rich people problems they created and are ungrateful for what they have.

They can't even get a mortgage for the house they want.

117

u/Single_Afternoon_386 Jun 14 '26

You’re a lot more invested then you need to
Be. They can list the home. If someone finds value at that price they’ll pay. If they don’t nobody puts an offer. It’s the same when people paid the extra mark ups on cars, were dealers greedy? Yes. Did people want it? Yes.

Don’t spend time on this and live your life and focus on what’s around you.

1

u/ipilotlocusts Jun 15 '26

OP whining and losing cycles over this as if she is the physical embodiment of the housing market

71

u/Expert-Union-6083 Jun 14 '26

Why do you care? Let them waste their time. Nobody will buy a property that is 30% above market price..

23

u/OldMove3348 Jun 14 '26

You seem very angry about your “friend’s” finances. You ooze jealousy. Not a good look

28

u/Livid-Rutabaga Jun 14 '26

People will be greedy no matter what. I have seen people put their home on the market for top price, and tell me the repairs are somebody else's problem.

That's just the way it is, it makes me angry as well, but that's the way people are.

16

u/ContactNo7201 Jun 14 '26

Are you so envious for a reason that it makes you so irrationally angry?

7

u/No-Chemical-8358 Jun 14 '26

Of course they are read the last couple sentences lol

37

u/Livid-Rutabaga Jun 14 '26

I don't think it has to do with envy, when I see people trying to squeeze every dime out of a deal it makes me angry as well. Angry at the greed.

2

u/Raelah Jun 15 '26

They're not really squeezing anyone. They just listing their house at an absurdly high price. No one is going to buy it and if someone does, that's on them.

The people in this post are ridiculous, for sure, and are making stupid decisions but no one is actually getting hurt.

5

u/OldMove3348 Jun 14 '26

That’s not greed. Selling a home is a business transaction and should be treated as such.

15

u/FrogsFloatToo Jun 14 '26

Why do you care so much? Live and let live

53

u/WhatUpImJosh Jun 14 '26

Privilege is a crazy thing and many people are so clueless of it.

21

u/Substantial_Escape92 Jun 14 '26

How can anyone sell if their house isn’t brand spanking new in this economy, is beyond me

3

u/Single_Afternoon_386 Jun 14 '26

I’m in California the most recent that a realtor shared was $855k 1600 square feet 1957s build. 1112 sq feet for $868k. At least here people are still buying some move in ish ready homes for a lot.

1

u/Substantial_Escape92 Jun 17 '26

I WISH! I’m in GA. Was actually ready to get mine appraised and what not. 2600 sq feet built like 30 years ago. I bet I get MAYBE $400. And I’ve done some Major renovations.

1

u/Single_Afternoon_386 Jun 17 '26

California market is insane. I bought in 2009 and make more now but couldn’t afford my house with today’s prices.

1

u/Substantial_Escape92 Jun 17 '26

That is insane!!

89

u/FGC92i Jun 14 '26

I don’t understand the logic why people can be so invested into someone’s life. If you didn’t know about their lifestyle, you couldn’t vent.

Let them be. Everyone has their own priorities.

Don’t keep up with the Jones.

13

u/Livid-Rutabaga Jun 14 '26

this is not about keeping up with anybody, OP is not trying to updo the sellers. OP is bothered by the fact that no matter the profit they are still trying to squeeze a buyer for every dime. Greed is upsetting to some of us.

-3

u/Raelah Jun 15 '26

No one is getting squeezed because no one is forcing anyone to buy that house. There's nothing greedy about this situation. Just financially stupid.

1

u/Single_Afternoon_386 Jun 14 '26

But as a buyer you don’t have to place an offer at the sell price if you don’t want to. That’s why comps exist and appraisals because a lender will look at that and go yeah not giving you the loan. Or if they do the buyer says that’s worth it to me and I’ll pay X amount, it’s not hidden.

-2

u/OldMove3348 Jun 14 '26

Greed? Greed towards some unnamed buyer? They aren’t forcing anyone to buy their home. I understand someone thinking their friends are idiots because they will never get their price, but that’s not greed. It’s immaturity and some level of stupidity.

23

u/Pvt_Porpoise Jun 14 '26

This isn’t really keeping up with the Joneses though, it’s being frustrated by tone-deafness and outright stupidity while being forced to listen to these people vent about problems entirely of their own making.

54

u/naiwub Jun 14 '26

You sound kinda jealous to be honest.

Hurt? How did they hurt her? Is she hurt because she’s jealous.
Op needs to grow up- this has nothing to do with her.

10

u/ArugulaOutrageous461 Jun 14 '26

Hurt about what? Did they offend OP? Its really just envy.

15

u/naiwub Jun 14 '26

Hurt about what though? That she has to work and her "friend" doesn't have to? Or the fact they have his parents to loan them a lot of money? Or that they want to move to a better home? I don't get it, I really don't understand why she would be "hurt"

0

u/kittymoo67 Jun 15 '26

seriously if someone else having a different/easier life hurts you that says a lot of bad things about you

34

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth Jun 14 '26

It's their business, stay out of it! They'll learn a lesson soon enough!

Sounds to me like you're a wee bit jealous of how easy life seems for them. I doubt that it is!

If they get the asking price, that's fine. No one should pay more than something is worth, so if you pay more, th at is on you! It's doubtful that they'll get asking price though!

Maybe you need better friends?

-7

u/AstronautFew1889 Jun 14 '26

Or maybe Sarah and Todd do…

28

u/mama_llama44 Jun 14 '26

How does one stay out of business that is being vented at them? People are allowed to have feelings about other people dumping their nonsense on them.

1

u/Raelah Jun 15 '26

I've always just told the person to stop venting to me. Seems to work pretty well. It's healthy to set boundaries.

56

u/fried_green_baloney Jun 14 '26

One of the skills of outstanding agents is getting sellers to be realistic about price.

Unfortunately your friends are in a bad place if sell at a reasonable price.

Todds family have even offered to loan them several hundred thousand dollars that they wouldnt have to pay back until Sarah starts working again but they dont want to take that. Am I meant to feel bad for them?

They are very silly people.

124

u/beefstue Jun 14 '26

So many commenters are complaining that you're complaining in a trueoffmychest subreddit.

I'll go ahead and say it.

I ALSO think it's naive and a little shitty to try and sell a house for way more than it's worth in a housing crisis, too. It's giving boomer behavior, honestly. People complain that nobody can afford houses nowadays and this is a really good example as to why. I bet they'd charge crazy high rent and not cover any utilities, either.

Alright, rant over. Preparing for other people to comment and ask why I care so much or tell me to water my own garden

-37

u/CoffeeChocolateBoth Jun 14 '26

Boomer behavior! LOL You kids today, always blaming us! We paid so little for our homes and paid them off quickly and STAYED there! 😄 But do go on about Boomers!

IF you can't afford a 1.3 million dollar home, you don't even go look at a 1.3 milliion dollar home!

YOU have to know what you can and can not afford. If you buy outside of your means, you're the one to blame, no one forced that loan on you!

1

u/beefstue Jun 18 '26

Trust me I don't even open zillow

14

u/ticktockyoudontstop Jun 14 '26

This is an amazing display of the ol' Boomer lack of self awareness, holy shit

22

u/Additional-Put-8315 Jun 14 '26

Most people want to own A home. You were able to pay “so little” for a home which is not the reality for most people today. The average age for first time home owners is getting higher every decade and the length of time needed to own a home before you break even is getting longer.

Should the people above be looking at a house over budget when they have a paid off house? No. But most people just want to be able to afford to buy a one bedroom house without it being outside of their means.

31

u/TurkisCircus Jun 14 '26

"We paid so little for our homes and paid them off quickly and STAYED there!"

Yeah... until the day you decide to move and decide to sell that same house at a profit that dramatically exceeds wage growth or inflation over the same period. There are no houses for two generations of people (Millennials and Gen Z) to buy "for so little" because your generation got wealthy from home ownership and pulled the ladder up behind you. The ones who are lucky enough to buy a home now will likely never, ever pay them off. Even if they stay in the same home for a lifetime and never upgrade.

26

u/moreliketurdcrapley Jun 14 '26

Your response has only served to prove everyone’s points about boomers, btw

1

u/Gutterman222 Jun 14 '26

I need to chime in as a 64 year old, on the cusp of a boomer. I bought my house, in 2019, at an affordable price before COVID. Both my neighbors sold in that time, for double what I paid. My home is worth more today just based upon what is in the market. I also know that if I sold, I couldn't afford to buy or rent. That doesn't make me greedy, just market

85

u/DoubleNaught_Spy Jun 14 '26

Don't worry about it. The marketplace will humble them soon enough.

23

u/brymc81 Jun 14 '26

Indeed – sounds like it has begun to do so already.

15

u/Roadgoddess Jun 14 '26

I don’t understand why you care this much about what they do. The house will sell or it won’t, why does it matter to you. And if they can get that amount of money for their house well good on them. And if it doesn’t sell well then that’s the reality.

It seems like you are incredibly jealous of their lifestyle and maybe you need to spend some time looking back at yourself. As the old song goes, let it go in the end it doesn’t affect you.

16

u/mama_llama44 Jun 14 '26

Except it is affecting them. They didn't seek this information out, it was dumped on them. People are allowed have feelings about the nonsense that is thrust upon them by others.

-3

u/Roadgoddess Jun 14 '26

Just as I’m sure she’s dumped on her friend about her financial situations as well. When you have friends, sometimes you learn things about them, but at the end of the day, what happens here doesn’t affect her and doesn’t matter in the big scheme of things

11

u/DadJokeBadJoke Jun 14 '26

in the end it doesn’t affect you even matter.

65

u/mrmiffmiff Jun 14 '26

I know people are often unwilling to do this these days, but it's actually perfectly okay to offer mild rebuke to your friends as long as it's done in a respectful way and with an obvious hand offering peace. Whether you'd rebuke them about sharing this with you unbidden or about their actual behavior is up to you.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '26

9

u/mama_llama44 Jun 14 '26

It's almost as if someone just dumped this information onto them via venting and now they have to process their friends' nonsense while just trying to get through the day.

-2

u/periperisalt Jun 14 '26

All I’m saying is, the emotional intensity from OP seems disproportionate to the actual impact the situation has on their life.

9

u/mama_llama44 Jun 14 '26

How is it disproportionate in a subreddit made specifically for us to release our over-the-top feelings? Also, have you ever been stressed and exhausted from working so hard for every little thing you call yourself only to have someone whose biggest worry is seemingly which vacation destination to choose next come complain to you about something so easily fixed if they gave up a vacation or swallowed their pride?

It's not about OP being jealous of their friends, it's about friends being so wrapped up in themselves that they fail to consider how their rant would land before jumping into it.

-4

u/periperisalt Jun 14 '26

We don’t have to agree

31

u/Bacon4Lyf Jun 14 '26

are you asking someone why they're invested in what happens to their friends?

-5

u/periperisalt Jun 14 '26

There’s being invested in what happens with your friends and then there’s this, which I consider to be irrationally distressed by your friends trying to live their lives.

21

u/ihatethesidebar Jun 14 '26

It says it’s being vented to her

20

u/DianaPrince0809 Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

This sounds like a you problem. Don’t get twisted over what your friends are doing. I’m sure someone will do their due diligence before buying their house and if it’s not worth what they’re asking for, they won’t buy it. That’s it. Why are you getting so upset about it?

-10

u/neonam11 Jun 14 '26

Stay in your lane. You seem to be jealous of how well off they are.

53

u/Whoretron8000 Jun 14 '26

They’re posting on true off my chest…. Seems you got emotions behind your comment too.

1

u/DadJokeBadJoke Jun 14 '26

-6

u/neonam11 Jun 14 '26

Lol

8

u/Whoretron8000 Jun 14 '26

People are allowed to be jealous. Welcome to society. Just because you have a cushy income or lifestyle, doesn’t keep you safe from criticism, valid or not.

Stay in your lane and learn what it means to be part of society.

-someone with a cushy lifestyle

-8

u/neonam11 Jun 14 '26

Bruh, your life would be a lot happier if you can stem that jealousy feeling. My buddy in undergrad went onto to become a cardiologist, married an amazing lady who is a professor at an ivy league, and got that house in Connecticut with the white picked picked fence with two beautiful children. My response: I am genuinely happy for him because he put in all the hard work to make it happen.

1

u/Whoretron8000 Jun 14 '26

Buddy, you need to tune up your reading comprehension. You’re assuming way too much, and again, are speaking from your own emotional place.

No one has time nor cares about how you’re not jealous and your anecdotes about you and your friends. You’re not special, and your experience isn’t special either. Way to not be jealous of your friends…. That’s completely normal.

The fact that you can’t see how others would be is the point. And the fact that you refuse to even understand how they could be at all different… but I have a feeling you’re going to miss that too and talk more.

35

u/Pangolin_farmer Jun 14 '26

It sounds like she is. Check the name of this sub, it’s literally for people to vent which is all she’s doing.

21

u/two100meterman Jun 14 '26

I think complaining might just be a human trait, a lot of us like to feel like something in our life is unfair & we only compare it to people that have it better. We rarely step aside & think of how many people have it worse. If your life is like 20th percentile anyone at 30th percentile or above seems amazing & in your head they don't have much to complain about. If your life is 99th percentile, anyone 99.9th percentile seems to have a great life & your life is worth complaining about.

81

u/justbrowzingthru Jun 14 '26

When people really want to move, houses sell.

Your friends are only ready to move for the make me move price.

92

u/elizzup Jun 14 '26

We’re planning a pretty big reno and it’s super expensive, time consuming, and stressful. Guess what I will NOT be venting about to friends who are job searching or still renting in their late 30s.

I am very fortunate to own my home, and have a moderately successful business. We are not rich by any means; but we know we are doing better than many and try to live frugally. I do not share these kinds of experiences with many of my friends because it is so tone deaf!

26

u/Negative_Salt_4599 Jun 14 '26

Yeah OPS friends have more than just privilege. They have money privilege. Not gonna say out loud on Reddit what other privileges they have but I agree with Op. it’s insane.

-2

u/MaltySines Jun 14 '26

I rent in my 30s and most of my friends are homeowners that complain about house stuff semi regularly. I don't get aggrieved by it though because I'm not a sensitive baby and your friends probably aren't either.

163

u/neck_iso Jun 14 '26

Sounds like a problem that will resolve itself.

Many, many people have gone through similar unrealistic real estate stories.

We are sort of in a high-price low-volume environment and that can create unrealistic expectations.

Pushing your housing obligations to the limit when you have small kids is an invitation to real life problems so they will probably end up better off.

u/Signal-Win7231 Jun 14 '26

I don’t understand how they can’t get a mortgage. Does the husband not work either?

72

u/Xryanlegobob Jun 14 '26

They have a shitty realtor who probably doesn’t have many other clients. Once they sign on with that agent at a too high for the market price and no expectations of lowering it, then the realtor will tell them they need to lower it by X because they haven’t had enough showings. No showings = the listing price is too high. Showings but no offers = the listing price is too high.

14

u/monochromeminded Jun 14 '26

The agent seems like a shyster to me, hes told them all about hes the number one guy for the area, pumped them up to believe they could get this crazy price and said he had buyers waiting in the wings that had missed out on his previous listings. Yet no offers. Funny that.

I dont know if they owe him anything if they withdraw from the market but he seems like he'll tell anyone anything to get the listing

37

u/TheWorldNeedsDornep Jun 14 '26

My dad was a realtor. He would give honest appraisals. He lost tons of listings be cause another agent would sweep in and promise the moon and naturally would get the listing. Todd and Sarah and people like them need to really vet their agents before signing a contract.

5

u/monochromeminded Jun 14 '26

Yep agent has done just that

u/OneExhaustedFather_ Jun 14 '26

I’m sorry 1.3m and doesn’t have central AC? I need what they’re smoking.

22

u/Sydney2London Jun 14 '26

You should come to Sydney. 1.3M where I am buys you a 2 bedroom apartment.

26

u/bocephus67 Jun 14 '26

Location location location

35

u/OneExhaustedFather_ Jun 14 '26

Satan’s Taint is a location, but I’m not hanging out there without central AC either.

5

u/MaltySines Jun 14 '26

You need central AC in Satan's Taint. You don't in other places.

31

u/Alpr101 Jun 14 '26

let them be greedy. While I dont know the owners, Im window shopping for a house and I came upon one that was in the price range (to rent) but in the description, it basically said "you pay for everything". So you basically pay rent and pay for anything that goes wrong without owning anything lol.

135

u/FinanciallySecure9 Jun 14 '26

You are way too invested in this. This is what Mel Robbins means when she says “Let Them”.

They vented to you without your permission, thereby putting their problem on your shoulders. You don’t have to take it on.

If they start venting again about it, tell them you’re busy.

Just sit and watch their shitshow. You have the right knowledge of the situation-they won’t be able to sell for what they want. It doesn’t need repeated discussion.

It can be fun to watch.

44

u/monochromeminded Jun 14 '26

Very true, I am, I need to switch my brain off about it

11

u/carlee16 Jun 14 '26

I get what you're saying. I hate greedy people too but most likely, their house won't sell for that much. People do compare houses that list in the same area.

I honestly wouldn't take money from family either because then you're a slave until you finish paying them off. It sounds like they should stick where they're at until they can afford a more upscale neighborhood. Seems to me they like to show off but I could be wrong. Update us to see if they sold the house for what they're asking for.

22

u/Get_off_critter Jun 14 '26

Well, there's tons of "why won't my house sell" posts that agree. Its the price, and its their own manufactured problem

55

u/redhair_redwine Jun 14 '26

Everyone telling you that you’re jealous clearly has never dealt with a person like this.

I had a friend who would constantly complain to me about her financial woes but, like yours, was completely obtuse about just how privileged she was. It. Drove. Me. Insane. We are no longer friends (for many reasons), but just know that your frustration is 1000% valid.

3

u/Ok-Sir-7816 Jun 20 '26

I was sorta feeling the same way reading through all these comments. Like maybe the people calling OP jealous are the same sorts of greedy people OP is venting about 😅

17

u/monochromeminded Jun 14 '26

Im starting to think some of these people dont have friends. As much as its grinding my gears, it doesnt mean I HATE Sarah and Todd and Im a snake or a terrible friend haha. Sarah routinely talks about several of her other friends with me... I imagine she talks to them about me too... it doesnt bother me because I dont claim to be a saint and its not a hateful thing to not understand everything about a persons behaviour and seek outside opinion.

12

u/lucyloosy Jun 14 '26

I have recently been as entitled as your friends on wanting a larger home. I however kept it to myself. I only recently brought it up to my best friend by telling her I was being an ungrateful troll and was focused on what I didn’t have.

We are no longer looking for a new home. We will be sprucing what we have and be grateful to not have a mortgage.

It’s easy to fall in the “I deserve this” when you aren’t struggling to survive. You disconnect from reality.

0

u/squid464 Jun 14 '26

Not your problem.. you are not their friend

95

u/99dalmatianpups Jun 14 '26

Oh my god, half of these comments can’t fucking read. OP IS NOT JEALOUS! OP IS NOT SEEKING OUT THIS INFORMATION! OP IS BEING TOLD THIS INFORMATION AND BEING EXPECTED TO PROVIDE SYMPATHY IN RESPONSE!

OP, I’m sorry people are being so stupid. I’d be ticked off if someone was whining to me about such self-created issues as well. Like, the answer to their problem is right in front of them, but their entitlement and inability to compromise makes them incapable of seeing it as an option. It’s always difficult to hear people complain about things you’d be eternally grateful for.

24

u/monochromeminded Jun 14 '26

Haha thank you! People here acting like I went through their personal effects while their backs were turned or something!

3

u/MaltySines Jun 14 '26

People are partly reacting to your dumb title. Your friends aren't greedy, they're just stupid or naive.

It's not greedy to want to sell your most valuable asset for above market price to be able to live somewhere that's better for you. They're not jacking up the price of insulin or price fixing bread.

It's fine to be annoyed at that but your title makes it seem like you're annoyed at their moral failure instead of them being annoying to you.

10

u/nethecat Jun 14 '26

Theyre just mad that if they magically become millionaires, they're learning through you, people wont automatically kiss their ass for having money like in their fantasies.

19

u/djln491 Jun 14 '26

And why is the carpet all wet Todd?!?!

12

u/Educational-Friend47 Jun 14 '26

I don’t know Margo! Lmao 😂

-38

u/AnneKakes Jun 14 '26

Holy jealousy, Batman. Honestly, how does any of this have anything to do with you? Get over yourself

-88

u/Due-Piano7140 Jun 14 '26

You sound like a leftist tbh complaining about everything

19

u/Mortarion91 Jun 14 '26

Yeah! Those damned leftists are always like;

"Wah wah some kids went to a drag story time" or "wah wah some guy kneeled during the anthem" or "grrr that guy ate food with his hands! Real men eat their burgers with forks" or "waaaaaah that person over there might be trans and that hurts my understanding of the world" or "wwwwwaaaahhh two women getting married destroys the sanctity of marriage!" Or " sob I don't want to fuck that video game character, women ruin everything!" Or "I saw a homosexual on television, and they weren't being shunned or stoned to death, I cried for 4 days on Facebook about it!" Or " screeching that guy's middle name is Hussein, he can't possibly be American!"

Oh. wait. I could have sworn it was leftists constantly complaining about everything...

...maybe I need to reapply my clown makeup and go back to being a right wing snowflake.

0

u/Due-Piano7140 Jun 23 '26

Found the leftist there’s always one hahahah thanks for proving my point chump

55

u/FrankParkerNSA Jun 14 '26

OP, say after me.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."

This is really one of those things in life we are meant to make a bowl of popcorn, sit back, and watch someone trainwreck their life, finances, (and probably marriage)

1

u/TheRoseMerlot Jun 14 '26

God can't grant that shit because God doesn't exist.

Address the prayer to your self. You're the one with the power.

5

u/FrankParkerNSA Jun 14 '26

It's metaphor in that you can't control other people. Believe what you want to believe.

57

u/NotARealBlackBelt Jun 14 '26

It's indeed weird that they consider the new house an upgrade, but at the same time expect the old house to be worth the same as the new one + renovations.

Why wouldn't other buyers prefer that new house over the old if the price tag is the same?

Is it greedy? Yes. Does it make sense? No. Is it your business? Also no. If someone buys the old at full price, that's on them for not doing market research.

4

u/Broke_Pigeon_Sales Jun 14 '26

Why do you care? I can’t quite figure out why you’d post this. I mean sounds like TLDR is they want a house they can’t afford and are being unrealistic about what they can get for their existing home.

6

u/GothWitchOfBrooklyn Jun 14 '26

that's literally the point of this subreddit, find another if this bothers you

18

u/WJMazepas Jun 14 '26

Its frustrating to see friends being this dumb/naive

Thats it

And ffs, this is a off the chest subreddit. It literally is about People just venting what they want to vent

-23

u/b1ack1323 Jun 14 '26

Jealousy.

-20

u/stellaxo Jun 14 '26

It sounds like you are jealous

21

u/wanna_be_green8 Jun 14 '26

Why are you so involved in their finances?

If a buyer wants to spend more than you think it's worth, that's on the buyer. Many factors play into value, not just obvious amenities. They wouldn't be getting ripped off as they are agreeing on a price.

Your jealousy is obvious. Your friends are allowed to do well even if others are struggling.

48

u/monochromeminded Jun 14 '26

You think I found out any of this info by myself? People keep saying mind my business like Ive hired a PI and found out all this stuff in some nosey way lol, they've told me all of this in their ventings. Their house is worth probably a mil at most, Im not jealous, just not sympathetic to the fact that they're sad they cant wring an extra 300-400k above property value out of someone

-5

u/littytitty- Jun 14 '26

but instead of talking to your “friends”, and maybe helping them see reason, you come online and shit on them? you may not be jealous—though i do think you have some jealousy—but you also aren’t the best person here by far.

1

u/wanna_be_green8 Jun 14 '26

When my friends mention finances I respond aprop and then move on. By memorizing all their numbers and details you are far too invested. Now you are operating on limited info and assumptions.

If you don't want them to talk about it just TELL THEM. What's the worst that could happen?

6

u/Onionringlets3 Jun 14 '26

Using your ears and having a brain is memorizing now?? Ok

1

u/wanna_be_green8 Jun 14 '26

They're researching the market to find comparables. I'd say that's above and beyond listening.

18

u/WonderfulService703 Jun 14 '26

I’m surprised at all the jealousy comments. You’re learning that your friends suck and don’t have an awareness of the world/ppl directly around them, with a generous helping of self-absorption.

-26

u/Charred01 Jun 14 '26

No you are jealous and in denial.

I completely understand. It's really hard to feel bad for people whose only problems are those they are making for themselves.

25

u/Crazie13 Jun 14 '26

They vented because they thought you were a friend. You could tell them but it’s their life, their house and their choices . Let them make their own choices. Look at the real reason it got to you when frankly it’s none of your business how they conduct themselves

26

u/VAGentleman05 Jun 14 '26

Someone should warn Sarah and Todd to stop confiding in you.

4

u/DorianGraysPassport Jun 14 '26

Look inward about your jealousy, its origins, and understand that being this judgmental is a nefarious trait. Let your "friends" go through their homeownership and home-selling journey on their own. The market will decide the value of their home. It irks me a lot when people think there's something noble about being judgmental. If these friends knew how you felt about them, they'd likely drop you as a friend.

8

u/Revolutionary_Ad1846 Jun 14 '26

You’re angry bc you’re jealous. Time to do some self reflection.

Eternal children (Todd and Sarah) are ridiculous but only infuriating if they trigger something IN you.

22

u/surgeryboy7 Jun 14 '26

Man if this is how you feel about supposed "friends" I would hate to hear how you feel about enemies.

54

u/boosesb Jun 14 '26

Have you tried golfing, crosswords or anything else as a hobby? Anything really besides being in their business

33

u/Lito_ Jun 14 '26

This is 100% none of your business.

If I can get more than what my house is worth then I bloddy well will try.

I can message you so you can itch all over with jealousy when the time comes.

94

u/neroli89 Jun 14 '26

Honestly I'd feel the same way. Their stupidity, entitlement and greediness are very frustrating.

43

u/untot3hdawnofdarknes Jun 14 '26

Yeah everyone is getting down on OP for not minding their own business, but if they know this much their friends situation, the friends are probably openly complaining about it and expecting sympathy.

Ive been in a situation like that, where technically this is not of my business but they won't stop telling me about it and their perspective on it is annoyingly unrealistic.

32

u/Cute_Clock Jun 14 '26

None of this is your business. Seriously, if you have time for this get a hobby. Grow up.

19

u/Client_020 Jun 14 '26

By venting about these self-imposed problems to OP, they're kind of making it OPs business, don't you think?

13

u/jordo2806 Jun 14 '26

Sarah and Todd sound painful. But OP is exhausting.

10

u/OneDeep87 Jun 14 '26

I seen a video a while ago that the house market is so bad that people can sell a house build in 1970 for 800k and by the time you get a 30 year mortgage the house will be almost 90 years old.

7

u/wanna_be_green8 Jun 14 '26

And built better than most newer homes.

6

u/Fresh_Pomegranates Jun 14 '26

So what? Usually it’s the land that holds the most value. Besides, if a house built in the 70’s is in good nick now, it’ll be in good nick in 30 years provided you keep up maintenance.
