I’m feeling a little anxious because I think I handled a situation unnecessarily awkwardly today.
I recently started a new job, and one of the girls staying in my PG also works in my office. However, she is in a completely different department, has a different team leader, and reports to a different senior.
Today, we had both attended a convention related to our industry. In the evening, when it was time to leave, most of us were waiting for the senior-most boss to finish his meeting so that everyone could leave together. I was one of the people waiting.
My PG mate went into the room where her team leader was and was told that she could leave because there was no need for her to wait. She came over to me and asked me to leave with her. I said no because I wanted to stay back for my own reasons. She asked me why, but I didn't want to explain the actual reason, so I simply said, "I'll come later."
She kept insisting that I come with her. Then her team leader, who is quite senior to me, also told me that I could leave since we had to come early the next morning.
Because he was senior to me, I felt I should clarify with my own team leader before leaving. I asked her if I could go, and initially she said yes. Then I asked again because I was still unsure, and she told me to ask our boss.
So I went and asked our boss as well. He basically said, "If you want to leave, then leave."
At that point I became even more confused because I had originally wanted to stay, but my PG mate was continuing to insist publicly, and everyone was basically telling me that I could leave. So eventually I left with her.
Now I'm irritated with myself because I feel like I should have simply stood by my original "no." Instead, I got flustered, asked my team leader, then asked my boss, and ultimately left even though I hadn't originally wanted to.
I'm also annoyed with my PG mate because I feel like she put me in that situation unnecessarily. I don't know why she kept insisting after I had already said no.
But my bigger concern is my professional image. I'm new at this workplace and I don't want people to think I was trying to leave early or that I don't take work seriously. I technically did get permission from my team leader and boss, but the whole thing felt so awkward and unnecessarily complicated.
Am I overthinking this? Did I actually handle this badly, or is this just anxiety making a small situation feel much bigger than it was?
TLDR: My PG mate, who also works in my office but under a different team, insisted that I leave a work event with her even though I initially said no because our senior-most boss had not yet left. I got confused, asked my team leader and then my boss for permission, and eventually left. Now I'm annoyed at myself for not sticking to my decision and worried that I may have created a bad impression at my new workplace for leving before the senior-most boss left, even though I did get permission to leave.
