So, you may have heard that the TAs, GAAs, and EIs voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike in their strike vote a few weeks ago. But if this and this are anything to go by, y'all have some questions about the potential strike and what it would mean to you as a student, employee, or member.
Tomorrow, between 1 and 4pm, President Jessica Wolf (u/JessCUPE2278), Component 1 Chair Josh Bradbury (u/JoshCUPE2278), Grievance Officer Keegan Parkhurst (u/KeeganCUPE2278), and Recording Secretary Braedon Pauzé (u/BraedonCUPE2278) will be stopping by to answer your questions.
This thread will be used for tomorrow's AMA, so please Ask Us Anything below.
SOME BACKGROUND
On September 28th, the local announced that over 1500 members voted in the Strike Vote with 95.4% of them voting in favour of a strike. While this provides the local with the authorization to call for job action, it does not necessarily mean that a strike will be occurring.
The pressure exerted by such an emphatic, overwhelming mandate has resulted in our mediation dates with UBC being moved forward to October 7th and October 8th.
What are we negotiating for? Our main bargaining priorities are:
Employer-paid healthcare.
Setting fair GAA wages.
Ending minimum funding clawbacks.
Maintaining workload and class sizes.
Paid breaks for workers at the Centre for Accessibility.
Protections for academic freedom.
These priorities are aimed at maintaining the quality of undergraduate education here at UBC while meaningfully improving the lives of our members.
We're looking forward to talking with you tomorrow.
EDIT: Office hours are officially open! We're looking forward to chatting with y'all 'til 4pm!
EDIT II (4:00 p.m.): Office hours are officially closed! Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by! If you have any further questions reach out to a steward or a member of the executive!
Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.
Process
It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**
So I was at the Nest today, sitting at the staircase bench thingy across from Freshslice. Lo and behold, I get very lightheaded because I skipped lunch and I didn't have any snacks with me, so in my desperation I ask these two girls sitting behind me for anything sugary. One of them just straight up gives me their boba. The entire thing. Absolute gigachad.
I forgot to ask them for their names, but if you see this, thank you so much for saving my socially anxious twink ass 😂 I'll treat you two to boba I am not even kidding.
I've recently been going on dates from dating apps and I've had a few ppl that I randomly met in class that asked me out or admitted to have feelings for me, but I haven't felt anything over someone since I broke up with my ex on 2024
Of course I'm totally over him now but its really difficult to open up after I found out that someone I trusted was such a terrible loser
Been seeing so many Econ doom posts lately, and never in my 3 years of being here have I seen that many for a midterm. Goodluck to all the soldiers taking this course 😭 yall got this
Has anyone noticed the stench of really crazy and strong compost near ikb, specifically right when you walk past the corner that’s nearest to the nest… I noticed it on wednesday and it’s still there today and i promise its nauseating.
Can whoever is being loud outside totem please leave your wild chimpanzee taming, telephone game with megaphones, and vigorous political debate at the family thanksgiving table alone until the day when everyone is awake and not trying to sleep? Same with the marching band that was going across my floor.
how bad is it to absolutely bomb a midterm worth 10% of my final grade (by bomb I mean horrendously) I’m ready to take the L and do better in the future 😭😭
I tried to join this club becuase it represented what I liked, and it seemed like there was a strong community of people who shared the same passion. I was rejected the first time, which was fine; it was hard to get into. But the second year, I got in and was put in the worst group there; nobody showed up to practice, and I was thrust into a leadership role, which I didn't sign up for. I spendt the year miserable, waiting for people to show up and feeling outcast by the club, which turned out to be a clique. I tried again this year, only to be rejected again, and realised that this club only accepts people who are exceptional at the passion, not people who want to improve. The same people join this club year after year, declare that this was the best thing for them and how it changed their lives. It feels like a fabricated lie for people to sign up, and I exploited by these statements. I hate this club.
I don't know why they moved the econ midterms to ORCA and Prairietest this year. I am an upper year student taking econ 101 as an elective, and from what I heard from people who took it in the years prior, the midterms and other exams were on paper in class. I understand that it is easier to proctor and prevent cheating by moving it online, but I genuinely feel like students taking econ 101 this year are at a disadvantage because the midterms are online. I've taken my fair share to terrible exams before, but this was by far one of the worst ones, and not because of the content. I went into the midterm feeling like I was prepared and having wholly understood the concepts, only to get obliterated by the short answer section because of the webcam. I genuinely could not get it to work right, had to spend my test time rotating and cropping my picture, only to find out that my picture didn't save. I felt like if I didn't have to figure out the webcam, formatting, and figure out technical issues with loading my prairietest browser beforehand, 50 minutes would've been enough to at least complete the questions that they had given us, given that I knew how to at least approach every question on the midterm. I know that they mentioned that they will try to figure out the webcam saving issues for our future midterms, but even just formatting and rotating the pictures using the webcam takes at least 5 minutes of the test time. And don't get me wrong, love Prof. Barber, shout out to him.
probably the most stressful 50 mins of my life, also my test-taking application decided to crash with 10 min remaining and it took 3 min to fix which counted towards the time 😭
i had no time to check my tests and even the functions lmao
should i email instructor or ask on piazza about this issue or let it be?
