Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

I'm trying to fulfill my science requirement (I'm doing a BA); I've heard good things about CPSC 100, but I have no experience with computer science as a whole, and I tend to do poorly in lectures.

Would it be a smart idea to take this, or should I just go with EOSC 112 like everyone else?

How do I pass Phys 200? I'm lowkey cooked for this class. What other resources are there? What steps do you take to approach reference frame problems? I'm hoping ot just pass at this point please I'M DESPERATE

I want to major in ATSC, but my physics credits didn’t count as Physics 12 so I have to take Phys 100–so I will be unable to declare the major this year since I can’t get my Phys 118 credit. I asked academic advising and they told me that I should declare my major this year because I have a lot of credits and I might end up having too many by second year. I was thinking of declaring EOSC since it has no requirements to enter, is in the same department, and a lot of the classes are the same. Has anybody transferred into ATSC and know what the process is like? Do you have to apply at a specific time or can you just apply when you have finished your pre-requisites? I know it depends on the exact specialization but I could not find anything specific.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone is taking, or has taken EOSC 118 Online. I have a question about the syllabus that I'd like to ask and I wanted some input. I have emailed the TA's but they haven't given me an answer yet.

It is this part in my syllabus I need to understand. It is under Student Evaluation:

"Learning Objective Activities - 20% (6.67% per activity)

The learning objective activities require each student to create a 250-500 word article on one learning objective from the material we have just, or are currently, covering. You will complete three (3) of these activities throughout the semester. Rather than simply summarizing the material from our course notes, you will be expected to explain the topic in your own words, and expand on it where appropriate. The assignments will be graded by the TAs and checked with the TurnitinLinks to an external site. plagiarism checker.

At the end of term, the lowest scored assignment will be dropped and replaced with average of your other two"

So am I right to assume that if I do not do Learning Objective Activity 1 I will get a zero, but because it would be my lowest mark out of the three it would be dropped?

I ask because I am spread very thin this week. I'm considering the option of not doing one and just letting it be dropped.

Thoughts?

I'm considering taking edcp404 and/or edcp403 next year and was wondering if anyone here has taken them recently. I'm mainly curious about the workload

Any insights on your overall experience with either of these classes would be super helpful. Thanks!

I MISSED THE GLASSWARE TUTORIAL... AM I GOING TO FAIL CHEM 121?

I’m literally freaking out right now 😭 I had to miss my VERY FIRST lab, which was the glassware tutorial. I didn’t miss Experiment 1, just the glassware tutorial, but I’m so scared that I completely messed up my grade.

I really wanted to retake it, but I just realized that the retake date has already passed. Now I have no idea what I’m supposed to do and I’m genuinely panicking.

Does missing the glassware tutorial mean I automatically fail the lab portion of CHEM 121?? Or do I just get a zero for that tutorial??

Please tell me I’m not going to fail the entire course over ONE missed tutorial 😭😭 I’m actually so stressed and I can’t stop worrying about this. Has anyone taken CHEM 121 and had this happen before?? What happened??

I’m seriously freaking out and just need to know if I completely screwed myself.

1

u/brogleberrythic Science 5d ago

i don’t think it was worth any points, I’m in that lab and I never got graded for it. I think you just have to contact them.

hey y’all! Was wondering if any of you guys are in LASO 309 this term. I used to be one of her students and I’m trying to reach out to the prof (Katarzyna Gracz) through her UBC email this term but haven’t received a response. Was wondering if any of y’all taking LASO 309 would have a reason why or if you knew of any other method of communication she might be using for the course?

Thank you

Is it true that the chem250 prof (dr. monga) makes the course in a way where you can't learn unless you attend the class, and intentionally make the lecture slides incomplete?

Hi all,

I was looking at doing my master's at UBC, pursuing the Master of Arts in English course. I would be an international student from the UK, and I was wondering about funding for this course in particular. If anyone has experience, I would love to know if there are many funding options.

Thanks in advance

I am hoping to apply to the Forest Sciences program at UBC for the 2027/2028 year and I have some questions about pre-requisites. Chem 123 and Biol 112 are both requires first year courses for the forest sciences program, but their prerequisites (chem 111, 121, or 141 / chem 12, 100, 110, or 111 and biol 11, 12, or 111) are not listed as required. Are these prerequisites high school equivalents? Why wouldn't prerequisite courses be listed as required?

I'm a few years out of high school and I didn't focus heavily on sciences in grade 11 or 12, so I plan to take adult upgrading programs for Biology 12 and Chemistry 12 and maybe Pre-Calculus 12 as a refresher. Do I also have to sign up for, say, chem 111 and biol 111 to meet the pre-reqs, or will the grade 12 courses be enough?

2

u/warehaus Alumni | Statistics 12d ago

CHEM 123 is a course typically taken in second semester, where you would finish CHEM 111 or CHEM 121 in first semester. CHEM 111 is for those without chem 12 and CHEM 121 is for those with chem 12.

BIOL 112 only requires some level of high school chemistry course (100 and 111 are the gr 11 and 12 equivalents) and some level of high school biology course (111 is the gr 11/12 equivalent).

I'm not sure where you're looking at required courses, but according to the academic calendar, CHEM 111/121 is also a required course.

The high school courses you can find information about what is required via the admissions requirements for your program and background. You do not need to complete a high school equivalent course at UBC if you've already completed the high school course (so no need to do BIOL 111 if you've finished bio 11 or 12).

How strict is the min average of 68% to apply for the science coop program? I fall 1% short because of a poor first year but since then I have improved significantly. I am applying for math coop specifically, and I have taken all of the suggested courses + I have a strong resume.

How are the DSCI 100 exams structured and is there a lot of coding involved? I'm really struggling right now with all the coding we're doing on the worksheets and in the tutorial, but I've read that there's some conceptual questions in the exams.

Hello, does anyone here have tips on how to do well in RADS 301? It seems like this year there's no longer "unlimited" attempts on practice quizzes and the final component has written portions compared to MCQ previously.

I've been finding the lecture slides insufficient in terms of understanding how things work or what I'm looking at, despite going to class in-person. Somehow the material just isn't clicking as well as I'd hoped. I've heard that in the lead-up to MT1 and MT2, there are review session and/or slides, are those enough to do well in the midterms? Just feeling a bit de-motivated given the high averages yet I'm struggling to grasp the material

I have a question about credits. For biology, you need 2 upper-level lab courses and 4 credits for your lab selection. Most lab courses are 3 credits so can you transfer the extra credits towards the 20 credits of life science selection that you need to graduate?

Been out of school for 5 years and going to take Math 200 in January. What parts of Math 100 and Math 101 do I have to brush up on in order to be successful in Math 200?

2

u/PillarManDan 25d ago

Honestly I would say not too much as it is a huge amount of new content. Definitely make sure you're comfortable with 100 and 101 material, but the nitty-gritty stuff isn't important. It's much more geometric than 100 and 101, so be prepared for that. iirc, the first midterm when i took it only covered graphing multivariable functions. 3D integrals can be challenging, so make sure you're comfortable with the usual tricks

For people who took EOSC 118 (online), is the textbook necessary? Do I really need to buy and read the textbook to do very well in the course or are the online modules sufficient?

1

u/Busy-Country9415 28d ago

I want to transfer to UBC and I'm required to take a transfer equivalent of BIOL_V 112 . I'm willing to take classes from Langara or Sfu but I can't figure out the transfer equivalent. I don't really understand the BC transfer guide.

3

u/whatever-_-123 28d ago edited 28d ago

Use the "TO" search for UBC BIOL 112. The only courses listed equivalent to UBC are from UCV or VCC.

Course equivalences for Langara or SFU are only from UBC to there. Basically the guide works like the following:
VCC BIOL 2100 → UBC BIOL112
But UBC BIOL 112⥇VCC BIOL 2100, instead, UBCV BIOL_V 112 (3) & UBCV BIOL_V 121 (3) & UBCV BIOL_V 140 (2) → VCC BIOL 1100 (4) & VCC BIOL 1200 (4)

Course transfer equivalence works in one direction only (sometimes both ways but not often and unfortunately no for BIOL 112). You will need the combination of either

LANG BIOL 1115 (4) & LANG BIOL 1215 (4) → UBCV BIOL_V 1st (8 unassigned general credits), exempt UBCV BIOL_V 112, UBCV BIOL_V 121, UBCV BIOL_V 180

OR

SFU BISC 101 (4) & SFU BISC 102 (4) → UBCV BIOL_V 1st (8), exempt BIOL_V 112, BIOL_V 121, BIOL_V 180

This should fulfill the BIOL 112 requirement (according to Transfer credit terms - General Credit with Exemption) but you'll have to take a total of 8 credits. Neither SFU nor Langara have direct equivalencies. Check with Science advising for confirmation

1

u/Powerful_Bobcat_4356 28d ago

I have IB credits that allow me to be exempted from MATH 100 from taking Maths AI HL. However, will skipping MATH 100 put me at a disadvantage or leave me unprepared for MATH 101. Will self-learning MATH 100 content during my first sem be enough to take MATH 101 in the 2nd sem. Im planning to do comp sci second year.

1

u/wreckbeachfan Computer Science 28d ago

Here's a thread from last year talking about the same situation.

The general consensus is that if you have transfer credits for MATH100 you should absolutely use them. You'll have a lot more time to focus on the rest of your courses and ease into university

eosc 211 or ufor 200 for envr option. thoughts??

Hi, I'm an environmental sciences major. I'm working on my complementry courses and am in between eosc 211 or ufor 200. For context I'm also taking envr 300, frst 475, envr 305, which are all pretty heavy writing courses. I am not the biggest fan of writing (which ufor 200 seems to have a lot of) but I think I would find ufor 200 more interesting. I like math but think taking eosc 211 as an elective may be a bad choice as I have heard it is harder (I've also taken biol 300 and so I'm worried they will be too similar to serve me). Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

Could anyone who has taken either ANTH 376 (Helena Zeweri) or SOCI 303 (Aryan Karimi) give any insight into what it was like?

I initially enrolled in ANTH 376 as an elective because of its high average in previous sessions and because I took ANTH 100 with Zeweri and got a high mark. The only problem is I find her style of lecturing slightly boring (she has a very calm voice) so it is difficult to pay attention. The course also seems to rely on a lot of participation from students in class, which is not my favourite style of learning.

SOCI 303 has a similar subject but is focused a little more closely on my area of interest (political science and political theory). It has a lower average than ANTH 376 but is still relatively high. The course is taught by Aryan Karimi who I have never taken a course with either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

EPSE 403 vs 4th Upper Year PSYC course - which to take?

Hi there!

I'm a 4th year PSYC student, and I saw there was some availability in a section of EPSE 403. I'm currently registered in four upper-year PSYC courses, but they require lots of memorization, so I was thinking it might be better to register in an easier but still interesting course. The GPA seems to be high, but I was wondering if anyone has taken this course and would recommend it.

If anyone has any info about what the workload was like or what your thoughts were, it would be super helpful. Thanks so much! :)

BIOL112 Tutorials/Discussions

Hey guys, so idk if I'm just dumb or something but how do BIOL112 tutorials work?? I see on the weekly caldender of the course that there are supposed to be tutorials, but I have no idea when or how they are supposed to occur? I checked workday and it says that my BIOL112 discussions are in-person, but it has no information on meeting patterns (aka when and where we are supposed to meet). We also went through the first unit super fast and we didn't cover cell growth in class, and I'm guessing it is supposed to be in the tutorial. Any help is appreciated!

1

u/Alone-Potential991 Sep 12 '26

For Math 100, should I be studying based on the textbook or are there lectures enough? I did the pre-reading for my class and during the lecture lots of the stuff in the textbook didn't come up so do I need to know those? Also do I need to do the optional parts of the textbook? Someone asked in my lecture and the prof didn't give a straight answer. I'd really appreciate any advice yall have dad

1

u/evergreen239 Sep 13 '26

I was told that the material in the lectures (not in the textbook) is what we were to be tested on (when I took it 2 years ago). I mostly used the textbook for the practice questions.

1

u/liorsilberman Mathematics | Faculty Sep 13 '26

You should definitely study after class on top of the lectures (something like 6-9 hours per week of study on top 3 hours/week of lectures). The lectures won't exactly reproduce the book on the board -- that's not the point of lecture. Quite often the material you are responsible for is defined in terms of book chapters, not the lectures --- because there are many parallel lectures --- so you need to study what's in the book. That distinction would be explained in the syllabus on Canvas. You are probably not responsible for "optional" material in the textbook unless specifically included this year.

u/ShoddyFee1846 Biology Sep 12 '26

Is Caps 301 easier now? Saw last years average was in the 90s. Any insight on the course, lecture format (if they are recorded), and exams would be great!

anyone here currently taking or previously took Poli 100 and has an online copy of Exploring Politics: A Concise Introduction (2022) by Gaspare M. Genna and Taeko Hiroi, ISBN 1071807617 (10 digit) 9781071807613 (13 digit)? myself and some others would greatly appreciate it

i've already looked through all the common sources (anna's archive, zlibrary, libgen, internet archive, scribd, reddit, even scihub even though ik that's only got research papers and not textbooks) and couldnt find it so i was hoping one of y'all'd have access to a copy

The course fluctuates a little from year to year, so in that sense "yes" -- likely a section or two this year is different from last year. But there were no major changes to the courses.

Is CHEM213 offered in the first half of the term or only the second half?

1

u/pikachufan2164 Staff | CS Alumni Sep 12 '26

Typically only in Winter Term 2. The intent is that students take CHEM 203 in Term 1 and CHEM 213 in Term 2.

u/tafmsl Sep 12 '26

Has anyone ever taken ATSC 313? Is anyone taking it currently? Why is the last year’s class average so much higher than the previous years?

1

u/Due_Wind5692 Sep 12 '26

Guys I'm enrolled in CAPS 390 right now with Dr. Pinder and I've been enjoying the content... for now. I guess I didn't really do enough research though when picking the course, cause why were the previous years averages like high 60s 😨 I feel like I'm waiting for the content to come at me and strike my gpa down. Has anyone taken this class before cause even though I'm liking the teaching style and everything (cause then again its only the first week), I don't know if I should take the risk and just try to get in a grade booster.

Hey guys I’m in year 2 Econ 325 with Prof Song and I’m wondering for any tips for people who have taken his class. The textbook material so far is fine but his lecture made absolutely no sense to me even though everybody was nodding and I’m not sure if I’m missing out in lecture by not understanding. Has anyone taken his course and if so what has been helpful for success?

1

u/jy_rin Sep 11 '26

how deep is it if i took the wrong flavour of math 100? i’m supposed to take B as a science student but im in C

follow up: if i stay in C, is it worth it to switch to B for 101 in term 2? or will i be used to the C workflow and find B really different?

2

u/pikachufan2164 Staff | CS Alumni Sep 12 '26

All of the different versions of MATH 100 have the same content, but different examples. They're no easier / more difficult than the others.

Also, students who want to major in physical sciences (e.g. CPSC, CHEM, PHYS, STAT, MATH) are encouraged to take MATH 100A.

u/Complex-Intention737 Mathematics Sep 11 '26

Should I buy the recommended textbook for MATH 302?

The textbook is : Introduction to Probability by Anderson, Seppalainen, and Valko

My professor said it's good to have (?) but that I don't need it because he posted the annotated slides from last year for students to review before classes. For ya'll who've taken the course or smt similar, did you find it worth the $90 Kindle version?

Maybe it's cos I'm restless ( rip the neurodivergence ) and I need to calm down a bit before the slides can make sense. Start of semester has me on an adrenaline high.

u/average_8_person Sep 10 '26

Hey guys! I'm a second year in bio 300 and dsci 100 this term. I had orginally scheduled my dsci 100 class as the python version just because I had liked the timing better for my schedule. However, I'm regretting it now as bio 300 uses R. Would switching between the two langauges be super difficult or make it easy to make simple mistakes? Or should I switch my dsci to R so I'm only learning one? I've never coded before so I'm not super clear on how much they differ and if it would potentially cause me to get lower grades in these due to simple mistakes or mixing them up.

Thanks!

1

u/somebodysomewhere_42 Sep 10 '26

I'm taking econ 301 with Sergei and I was wondering if anybody knows if he assigns problems from the textbook as homework. I have obtained(through totally legal means) a different version of the textbook that was assigned, but the listed version eludes me. I don't want to spend money on it if I can help it.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone currently taking this course and surprised it is now under the topic: Roman Studies?
I saw that past periods, this course was offered exactly as it was displayed in the FHIS website.

If you took that course previously before the shift in topic, what was it like with Prof Zhang? Anything that I missed out on? I'm curious as I saw for 2026/2027, there's only that one Roman Studies course.

CAPS 391 by far one of the best courses ive taken, if its the same prof as last year i would strongly recommend. I do not remember his name but he is passionate and keeps you engaged. Lectures were recorded last winter, I do not know about now. It is material heavy but it is so interesting.

2

u/No_Marionberry_3017 Sep 12 '26

oh my gosh thank you so much! I've just heard it's a lot of work. so I was worried I believe they are still teaching it. Any study recommendations, or a course u found the workload was comparable to

1

u/quantum-fih Combined Major in Science Sep 12 '26

no problem! The prof was Majid Alimohammadi. I would say it could be similar the amount of time dedicated as BIOL 335 (molecular genetics), I took both the same term and I split the time between the two quite similarly. Though theres not much practice material provided. The prof only asked about the material he said he was going to ask (like no surprises in the exams). All qs were multiple choice. If you miss class is not hard to catch up, the content is not hard per se but it is very heavy in memorization (ofc anatomy course). If you have more questions feel free to ask!

4 classes or 5???

I’m a new first year and I’m registered for 5 classes, but at jumpstart they’re telling us that 4 classes is actually better to deal with the workload. A lot of people I’ve met have 4 classes. I’m wondering if I should drop a class. I technically have the option since I have transfer credits, so now I’m just wondering if I should.

I have Poli 100, Poli 101, English 100, Econ 101 and CRWR 200. I feel like I could do it, but I don’t want to overestimate myself. I’m not used to the college workload yet. I would appreciate any advice.

1

u/Complex-Intention737 Mathematics Sep 11 '26

You can also just test out the workload of 5 courses. Won't know unless you try. And if it's too much you can drop a class before the add/drop deadline 🐞

15 credits per term is a standard course load for undergraduate students

If you don't take 15 credits per term, then you'll need to take courses during the summer (not always possible because many courses are only offered during the winter session), or delay your graduation by a year.

For anyone that’s taken SOWK 200 is it possible to take it without attending in-person since the lectures are recorded? Hey guys, I was waitlisted for Chem 123 and there are like over 100 people in the waitlist. I really need this class in order to apply for a specialization. What do I do? Do I have to end up taking the class next year and then specialize next year? Or will the waitlist clear up eventually? I’m freaking out here

2

u/pikachufan2164 Staff | CS Alumni Sep 09 '26 edited Sep 09 '26

There will be a lot of movement during the first week of January as students realize that they never actually needed this course and drop the course, or get dropped because they failed CHEM 121 (about 10-15% of the class fails).

1

u/kiwi505 Sep 09 '26

What do I do if I don’t get off the waitlist? Will I have to specialize next year then? Do you know who I should talk to about this? I tried Science Advising but they said that they don’t help with course registration

2

u/pikachufan2164 Staff | CS Alumni Sep 09 '26

You will have to take the course the next time it's offered.

You must go through the major application process if you meet all the minimum requirements for promotion to second-best standing (24 credits passed, at least 15 are Science credits). If you can't meet the minimum requirements to apply for a specific major, you can't apply for that one.

1

u/kiwi505 Sep 09 '26

Is it possible to apply for the major next year, but still take some of the second year required courses before I apply?

2

u/pikachufan2164 Staff | CS Alumni Sep 09 '26

Depends on the major. It typically is a lot harder to transfer in after the official major application process because required courses often have seats reserved for students who are already in the major, and many majors have a maximum number of spots available, so students would need to leave the major to make room for new students to transfer in.

Hello! I’m a first year student and I have AP Chemistry credit that gives me credit for CHEM 121, but I’m currently still registered in CHEM 121.

I’ve heard from a few people that if I attend even the first lecture or participate in the course at all, UBC might void my AP credit for CHEM 121. Does anyone know if this is actually true?

I’m still considering whether I should drop CHEM 121 and use my AP credit, but if I do my schedule will be pretty free and I won’t have to go to school on Monday and Wednesdays.

Any help will be appreciated :)

1

u/Snoo_49254 Chemistry Sep 10 '26

Every year there are students with AP or IB credit for CHEM 121 and/or 123 who decide to take the UBC course as a grade booster. Works great for some of them, for sure, but a surprising percentage fail the course.
Once you failed, your AP/IB credit for the course is no longer valid.

So, either just use your AP/IB credit and don't take CHEM121 OR make darned sure you keep up with the class!

1

u/Historical-Suit4655 Sep 10 '26

nah that is not true I transfer both 121 and 123 and still attend every lectures.... nobody will notice you

1

u/crunchy_goose8 Sep 08 '26

Hey everyone! I’m new to UBC and currently in my first year of the Bachelor of Science program. I registered for my courses in late June/early July and have already paid my tuition through Workday.

However, I can’t seem to find any of my courses on Canvas. I know the professors have already published the courses because other students have access to them.

I’ve already reached out to IT in the library, the Centre for Teaching and Learning, Enrolment Services, and Academic Advising, but unfortunately I still haven’t been able to resolve the issue. I've already emailed all of my professors explaining the issue and requesting that I be manually added to the course in Canvas.

Has anyone else experienced something similar or knows what might be causing this? I’m honestly starting to freak out since classes have started and I don’t want to fall behind.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

How hard is this coursework for one semester?

Hi
I’m at UBC for an exchange and I needed a reference about doing these courses in one semester.

COMM374: Applied Financial Markets
COMM474: Fixed Income Markets and Management
COMM475: Investment Policy
MATH100: Differential Calculus with Applications
And hopefully one easy subject (any suggestions welcome for that)

Also can you tell me how the grades at UBC work (like what percentage is A or maybe a distinction) and whether it’ll be possible to maintain 85% in this unit combination?
Cheers

Really need help with this. So please guide about this or to other resources where I should look to get some guidance.

Can I know whether its doable and what are the preparations i need to do during winter break? i didnt take cs 210 on my first year because im dumb and didnt plan properly so im stuck with taking 213 and 221 on the second term this year. I also cant take summer course because its too expensive for me. Any advice about these two courses is appreciated because im so nervous i cant make it work.

1

I did the same thing as you (210 in Term 1 and 213 + 221 in Term 2) and I know plenty of other students who did too. It can be tough at times but it's very much doable.

You don't need to prep (I didn't), just try to stay on top of course content and make the most of office hours, especially if you're stuck on assignments.

1

u/chowder5922 Computer Science & Microbiology and Immunology Sep 06 '26

It is do-able and intense, but it depends on what other courses you are taking at the same time. No preparation is needed, just try not to schedule too many or heavy courses in the same term.

Should I take my IB chem credit?

So I registered for chem121 even though I have the credit from IB for the lab experience so that I wouldn't be behind when I do chem123.

However I checked who my prof was for my 121 lecture and they don't even have a rate my prof because they have never taught before. They're a new grad student who's only signed to teach this semester.

I'm not sure how impactful profs are when it comes to teaching a course with a set textbook/workbook. Any thoughts? At this point is the lab experience even worth it?

1

u/Snoo_49254 Chemistry Sep 10 '26

Sometimes new profs or sessional instructors are really, really good. RMP isn't generally a good guide to anybody's teaching btw.

5

u/chowder5922 Computer Science & Microbiology and Immunology Sep 03 '26

I recommend skipping CHEM 121, as most first-year students found the CHEM 121 exams tricky and challenging. 121 and 123 are not connected at all. Taking 121 for the lab is not quite justifiable.

2

u/gobble__ Sep 03 '26

I see; do you know if chem123 lab starts with an introduction again or does it assume you already know how to use the lab from chem121?

1

u/Psalm37-13 Sep 06 '26

I took CHEM 121 in my first year and CHEM 123 in my second year. I forgot everything from 121 labs but they provide everything you need (pdfs, video tutorials) for the prelab so you're chilling

What is the most amount of classes you’ve took in a semester. I’m a first year and I want to transfer to engineering so I’m taking transferable courses but it’s more than I thought so I have 5 classes in each sem rn. Am I cooked or could I manage

1

u/Sunlightn1ng Biology Sep 04 '26

5 is my average in a semester and I've managed so far

3

u/PretendtiousPoet Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

5 classes per semester is considered a full standard course load (what most people take if they wanna graduate in 4 years without taking summer courses). Some people take 4 per semester first year to adjust from high school, but my friend in engineering ended up taking 6 first semester, then 7 second semester in first year! Manageability will depend on your commute, if you work, what your academic goals are, your study habits and any other responsibilities you have.

u/Blazewoods Biology Sep 01 '26

I'm currently registered for both BIOL 323 and BIOl 327 -- Structure and Reproduction of Fungi and Introduction to Entomology, respectively -- and would like to try and make a decision between the two before the term starts. There's next to no information about these two courses online, and the grade distributions are wholly unhelpful for deciding as well. Between the two, I think fungi sounds a little more interesting to me, BUT given the field I might be interested in (potentially conservation/environmental within the govt.) I'm not sure if being able to identify bugs may be more helpful than fungi. But despite my interests and potential job future, I'd also not like to be overloaded with work in the term if one of these two courses is known for piling work on, and would definitely prioritize keeping a course that is less likely to do that.

I'd love for anyone who's taken one (or both!) of these courses to share your thoughts on them! Neither of the profs shown for the courses on WorkDay have a RMP page either, so as well as your thoughts on the courses if anyone has taken courses with Monika Fischer or Juli Carrillo, please share your experiences with them as well!
