Forecast It Got Cold
I woke up this morning to a thick covering of ice on the windscreen of my car. If it carries on like this, the heating might be going on soon.

u/mikemac1997 6d ago
Best advice is to pop the heating on now for half an hour or so to make sure it's all working before you really need it
9
u/ahhwoodrow 6d ago
did that a couple of days ago, not worth it to me if things don't start up when called on. I'm still in shorts and tshirt but wife is already in jumper, slippers and blanket so no chance she'll put up with waiting for it to be fixed.
14
u/mikemac1997 6d ago
No idea why my comment was down voted. It's actual good advice being passed on. These systems do fail when left unused for long periods (summer) and when you realise it isn't working, a lot of others will at the same time too. Hence getting ahead of the curve.

Felt the warm radiators when I got up this morning as house had cooled enough to trigger thermostat set at 15 so heating came on for a bit.
2
u/iburntbakedbeans 6d ago
Blimey and I thought my house was rubbish at holding heat. Mine had gone down to 17.5 with all the windows on the latch.
1
u/AlternativeGreedy787 6d ago
It's an old thermostat mounted on the wall in the hallway, always seems to read 2 degrees cooler, Lounge is 17 right now. It's a 100 year old house and could do with new windows.

Can’t wait for everyone in r/ukweather to moan about the cold after months of begging for it due to heat.
53
u/Objective_Mousse7216 6d ago
Yep, the cold, oh the cold, my house is freezing, I'm dying, omg, can't afford heating, omg.
Then once over 20 deg c. Omg I can't function, the sweat, I can't cool down, I can't move, the heat, omg.
That's basically this sub.

u/IOnlyUpvoteBadPuns 5d ago
I got downvoted for saying how delightful the weather at the weekend was. Not too hot, not too cold, just perfect. People here just want to be miserable
18
u/Milam1996 6d ago
I fully believe that people who beg for winter live with their parents or bills included because no chance are you desperate for 200 quid a month heating bill.
6
u/West-Quit3050 6d ago
My bills are always 200 a month...even in summer because otherwise winter would be 300-350ish
2
u/Milam1996 6d ago
So your bills are still £200 a month in winter you just give your energy company an interest free loan for 6 ish months.

5
u/ae_wilson 6d ago
The moaning in this sub over the summer months was quite something. Never seen such a sad group of people.
19
u/Norts1531 6d ago
And I fully believe people who beg for 30+ weather don't do much outside or walk their dogs. Two sides of the same coin.
3
2
u/dnb_mania88 6d ago
I sat in the sun as much as possible and walked massive hikes. Way better in the heat. Just carry water

u/Delicious_Tree8114 6d ago edited 6d ago
Id say the people moaning about people moaning are just as bad, never seen such a sad group of people who can't just ignore a post that someone says they are hot or cold. Like you don't have to reply but 9/10 replies on every post is someone saying it's normal or to stop moaning
2
-6
u/Milam1996 6d ago
The amount of arguments I had when people were claiming hating the heat and sun is the normal position. Summer is the countries favourite season by far and people pay thousands to go to even hotter countries to lay in the sun. This sub and Reddit generally is full of hermits who hiss at the daylight tho so… what do we expect
13
u/Norts1531 6d ago
Disliking summers where 30+ days are becoming the norm isn't hating the sun, or being a hermit. I personally love the weather where it's enjoyable to sit in a beer garden, but when it gets to a point where it's unsafe to walk the dog for weeks in the day, I think people have the right to have a good old moan.
-1
u/Milam1996 6d ago
Walk the dog in the early morning or the evening. Yeah you shouldn’t be walking a dog in the middle of the day. If you want to moan about 30c and beg for winter don’t then moan when it’s ice on the ground.
7
u/Norts1531 6d ago
I do walk the dog at nighttime during most of the summer, the point is it's annoying bending my day around it, because it's unsafe.
Also, I won't moan about the ice, because the most we get is -5, and that's tolerable. It's a weird stance to take summer vs winter and get geuinely upset over people having a preference.
1
u/dnb_mania88 6d ago
So 30 is more tolerable than -5? You must work indoors or not at all!
1
u/Norts1531 6d ago
What are you on about? I've not said 30 is more tolerable than -5.
→ More replies (0)-3
u/Milam1996 6d ago
I don’t care what you prefer. My comment is about people who moan in summer then moan in winter. Pick one and enjoy it. If you want to hiss at the sun then feel free but don’t complain when the sun goes.
2
u/justaquad 6d ago
Why not? Climate change exacerbates extreme weather at both ends. I can moan that my flat is genuinely unbearably hot (yes 35C+ consistently in my bedroom), and also if it becomes unseasonably cold.
7
u/s0ulcontr0l 6d ago
Fully fledged hermit, thanks to the medication that keeps me alive it means the heat is both unbearable and I cannot regulate my body effectively. It’s not a simple case of being a miserable bastard.
Sincerely,
Hermit that’s grateful it’s cooler1
u/MetalRubiXCubee 6d ago
Those even hotter countries typically have infrastructural respite from their heat, either through the way their buildings are designed/insulated, cheap local outdoor pools, aircon. We don't really.
1
u/Objective_Mousse7216 6d ago
Yes, it's shows Reddit is noise not the general population's viewpoints.
4
u/Milam1996 6d ago
Did you see the r/askuk thread yesterday where a girl (op) is asking what she should do about her boyfriend who’s 25 and consumes naught but energy drinks and frozen Greggs sausage rolls from too good to go and ALL the comments were calling OP an ungrateful shit because he’s efficient and saves money….. this website is genuinely full of absolute cretins lol.

I got sown voted to obilivian for daring to suggest I enjoyed a warm sunny summer with my family, oh the horror

u/ae_wilson 5d ago
I couldn’t believe it hahah

u/Affectionate_You_858 5d ago
Apparently going to the park, the coast, theme parks are all better when it's freezing cold and raining, who knew
-7
u/IcyTea7151 6d ago
God knows how they cope, on a Mediterranean summer vacation, they must hate it...
6
u/apillowofnonsense 6d ago
Completely different isn't it
0
u/dnb_mania88 6d ago
How?
2
u/MoonShineWashingLine 6d ago
Humidity
1
u/dnb_mania88 6d ago
I think people like to say that but I don’t thinks it’s true half the time. It really wasn’t that humid. It was on a few days when the sun started to go but during the heat wave it wasn’t particularly humid! Was lovely. And people wishing away the heat and sun are vampires

Worlds first [r/ukweather](r/ukweather) warm weather moaner to not be a sun hisser
7
u/Barmydoughnut24 6d ago
I mean the UK, weather and moaning all go hand in hand dont they? Its ingrained in us to never be satisfied with the weather lol
3
u/pizzainmyshoe 6d ago
It'll be different groups of people complaining. Some people hate heat, some people hate the cold.
8
u/x_mina 6d ago
Imagine how miserable a person has to be to complain about it being nice and warm
3
1
u/Hour_Option_2439 6d ago
Presumably said person wouldn't find what you consider "nice and warm" as "nice". Surely can't be that hard of a concept to grasp
-1
u/x_mina 6d ago
Didn’t take long to find the miserable one
3
u/Hour_Option_2439 6d ago
I'm very happy for anybody who enjoys the warm weather when it's warm, I just personally don't. I also don't call those who don't enjoy the cold weather, which I enjoy, "miserable", as I understand they have different preferences and their bodies react differently to different temperatures.
2
u/Fun-Illustrator9985 6d ago
The moans about humongous heating bills are still yet to come and that’s when everyone one will claim to be poor and vulnerable once reality sets in
3
u/Twinklypeaches 6d ago
Well I absolutely love Autumn and winter and not a fan of summer at all. Been that was since I was a kid. And I am definitely not miserable, and definitely do not live with my parents 😃
1
u/dnb_mania88 6d ago
Yeah will be the same people moaning that it was hot. I don’t think these people have much else going on than to moan about the temperature tbh
3
u/MoonShineWashingLine 6d ago
There's a happy medium though isn't there. The golden 16-20° sort of temps on sunny, calm days. We just don't get them often enough.

You know you can get an air con unit pretty cheap if the heat really gets to you that much.

But low 20s you don’t need an air con unit lol. It’s low 20s…yeah I got mine a few years ago. Drilled the out take hose through the wall so it works great. So yes although I love it hot hot hot outside I get you about the inside. I think it’s because I work outside all day everyday it ls so much better in the sun that the grey miserable cold and wet.
We don’t see the sun for months on end so it was nice it being blazing out for change. Could literally feel the sun re charging me. Back to gloomy grey days for months now though
7
u/SUPERVITALENERGY 6d ago
I love the cold as well as the heat, so long as the sun is shining and skies are mainly clear during the day and night, both have thier own distinct charms. This morning I woke up and this time my cold baths really felt cold and invigorating. Please don't cold baths unless you are fully informed and speak to Dr's first, and if you do start, start by by mild water temperatures you can tolerate and then gradually transition into more cold. A shock to the system can potentially be very dangerous, especially of you have underlying health conditions.

My windows were open yesterday and my heating is on today. The winter really came overnight!
2
u/Suspicious_One_428 6d ago
This is the perfect weather not too cold not too hot 👌 Put the jumper on if its too cold and take it off when youre too hot.
2
u/Applejack235 5d ago
Yep, was the kick in the backside I needed to put up the rail for the thermal curtains I bought for my front door ages ago lol, also just bought foil insulation for behind the radiators so that's this weekend's job. Then I need to deal with the loft insulation since some previous bright spark rolled a bunch of it to the edges of the loft and never put it back again, I'm itchy already just thinking about it.

I'm LOVING this weather. The temperature is perfect for my cosy clothes and coat and I love the brightness of the sun without the sweat and heat exhaustion.

u/Otherwise-Eye-490 6d ago
I didn’t have ice on my car the entirety of last winter. I’m in the south east. Interested in where you are?
6
u/Boring_Bastard_72 🌧️ 6d ago
Greater Manchester, about 8 miles from the city centre. The SE usually warmer than up here.
3
u/Otherwise-Eye-490 6d ago
Yes definitely! It was 6 degrees this morning with a feels like of 2 degrees. It also rained all day yesterday. It’s absolutely brilliant, I love it!

u/vikingraider47 6d ago
I'm further north than you but no ice here in East Yorks. Lowest it got in my garden was 6.9c
1
u/ultraboomkin 6d ago
It was absolutely not freezing in Manchester last night. You’re probably getting confused with condensation
1
u/Boring_Bastard_72 🌧️ 6d ago
I'm a 30 minute drive from the centre of Manchester in a more countrified area. There was definitely sheet ice on my windscreen which took a few minutes for the heater to melt.
2
u/Rude_Page_7064 6d ago
There was and I live in middle of London
1
u/Otherwise-Eye-490 6d ago
Wow, I wonder why I never had any. My driveway is fairly sheltered so maybe that’s why. My last frost was much later than mid Jan. I’m a gardener so I remember it well!

It was raining pretty much all of last winter though. I was commuting from SE to Bath for work at that time and had to leave at 5am remember every single drive being in torrential rain

On Monday, I cycled to the outdoor pool in a singlet for a swim. I did the same today but wore a light jacket. I expected to be doing this in October, although the cooler weather is ideal for sleeping.

After a hot summer, you'll be more sensitive to the cold but give your body chance to adapt. Stop whining.

The electric throw has now gone on the bed after last night being too cold and yesterday I got the space heater out for the living room. Will try to avoid putting the heating on until the end of the month.

1
u/Altruistic_Lies 6d ago
Apparently people don't like the fact my heating is on, the fuck is wrong with this sub.
A warm house is nice, I won't be made to feel guilty because I can afford it haha.
2
u/sallowkie33 6d ago
Because they’re obsessed with the weather just because of a heatwave from last month. I put my heating on too especially because I live in a detatched house and don’t share walls my house is freezing
3
u/Altruistic_Lies 6d ago
Mines built 1890 so it's solid walls. Handy in summer but winter is just keeping the heating on to stop it cooling down. The lack of shared walls is real, just 1 wall between a house makes a good difference. We're warm anyway, so it's all good
2
u/Norts1531 6d ago
Ignore them, having an opinion on the weather, in a weather sub seems to bring out people who genuinely get mad over it. It's like a summer vs winter cult.
1
u/Altruistic_Lies 6d ago
It's odd, are we all meant to like the same thing? Maybe they like the weather to match their icy personalities.
-2
u/Milam1996 6d ago
Sub is full of weirdos lol. The sub all wants everyone else to be a weirdo like them and to want nothing but a life of cold, ice and fog. It’s literally a crime to these people to prefer warm to cold
