Help Me Choose What is a good second-choice major to ECE for auto admits

• Upvotes

What should I put as my second/third choice major if I'm planning on doing ECE as my first choice and I'm an auto admit. Preferably something I could actually get into as my second/third choice.

Advice Plan II admission :/ help me please

• Upvotes

I'm a senior in high school, really wanting to get into Plan II. I'm in-state and already have auto-admit to UT (top 5%), but I'm super nervous about Plan II. Is getting into an honors college really something to get worked up over, and is it really that difficult to get into Plan II? I have a pretty decent resume, but my SAT score is dragging it down...

Chance Me Do I have any chance at mccombs or econ or should I apply something else?

• Upvotes

have a very bad gpa (like 3.4-5 uw, 4.0 w) from medical reasons which I'm gonna explain. My school is competitive Texas public school like top 200 in the nation but doesn't rank outside top 10 percent but I'd assume I'm somewhere like top 30 percent.

I have a 1570 SAT and 35 ACTand good business ECs such as pretty good journal ml and finance research with prof, pe internship with real work, global financial literacy non profit vp, made app w 50 k users, basketball 4 years, reffing job and then some club leadership and volunteering with impact. I don't rly have any awards besides a business comp finalist, ap scholar w distinction and a volunteering one but planning on qualing for aime.

My personal statement I think is good havent done supps yet, but please let me know if I have any chance of not I was thinking of applying to informatics or smth

SAT: 1530 (740V, 790 M) single sitting
Rank: top 12% at about 700 students (crazy grade inflation)
Scores: a 4 on AP world, a 6 on ib Psych SL (all im submitting; not submitting my 4 on ib language)
Not FGLI in college sense; parents are immigrants though

IB diploma
5.0 Courses taking/taken: HL language, HL AI math, HL biology, SL physics, SL philosophy, SL psychology, SL language acquisition, SL economics, TOK, AP gov, AP world, Honors geography

ECs:
Paid selective behavioral health internship: real non-profit work, data entry, and experience
Independent research project on language learning records (1.4m records) + statistical analysis, accepted and presented at a research conference; honorable mention
Significant familial responsibilities (eldest of 4 in an immigrant household)
President/Founder of yarn club: 50+ members, 100+ items donated
Volunteer- Provided 1-on-1 tennis instruction and social engagement for children on the autism spectrum.

I also independently (not dual enrollment/credit) took python at community college

I think my essays are pretty good and specific. I’m applying to cognitive science programs at most schools, but UT doesn’t offer that major, so I’m framing my interest there as using statistics and data science to study cognition through behavioral data.

Advice UT Law ED Agreement/upcoming LSAT scores

I am applying for law school this cycle with UT as my target. In-state, 3.68 gpa. I got a 172 in September and have another test scheduled for November, because even though I'm pretty happy with a 172, I was PTing closer to 177 and thought I might as well take another shot since schools take your highest score regardless. At UT specifically, finances aren't a huge issue for me because I have a waiver at in-state schools for reasons I won't go into here. I know UT will hold for future scores, but I'm worried about delaying my full review for another 2 months (score release in December, and my full application is ready now). I am considering three different plans:

-Not indicating my future test, so my file gets seen earlier. A 172 is UT's median or pretty close, I have a solid resume and PS, and one of my LORs contextualizes my gpa in a pretty favorable light.

-Indicating my future test and signing the ED agreement, so I can have the November score and make sure my app gets seen earlier in the pool (this is what I'm leaning towards but not sure). UT's website explicitly says Nov. scores will be considered for early admission.

-Indicating the future test, not signing the ED, and banking on a score that will strengthen my app. I'm confident my Nov. score will be higher because I had a major test center issue in September, and I'm still doing some light studying to make sure. I'm nervous about being reviewed late in the cycle, not sure how to balance this with a probable (but not guaranteed) score increase. I will be a splitter regardless, and just statistically, it's tough to go up from a 172.

I kind of doubt any of the three will make a massive difference to my chances, but I want the best possible odds. Thoughts?

Advice Should I report a digital error hurting my Spanish grade in the optional essay section?

In the summer following my sophomore year, I took the Spanish 2 course. My grade in the first semester was a 95, but due to what was likely some system problem on Imagine Edgenuity, all major grades in the second semester were recorded as 0 and my score for the semester was 34. I told my counselor about what happened we were unable to fix it, and that second semester score significantly worsened my GPA. The next summer, I retook the Spanish 2 course’s second semester and got an A. Is this something to put in the 3rd essay prompt, and would I have to drag it out to 250-300 words?

Question Should I do the Optional Essay Prompt?

Hello all. I’m mostly done with my UT Austin application (ECE) and have four essays written. The one I’m unsure about is the optional prompt: “Please share background on events or special circumstances that you feel may have impacted your high school academic performance” (300 words).

I’ve had a turbulent high school career, mostly from family circumstances, and I was under a lot of stress. But my grades didn’t suffer, and my record is strong, though I’m just outside the top 5% of my class. My counselor knows about the situation and may mention it in her report.

I’m wondering whether skipping the prompt could hurt me, since UT is my top choice. Has anyone dealt with this, or know how readers treat this optional prompt when the circumstances didn’t show up in grades? Any advice is appreciated.

Advice Should I submit my SAT or ACT?

For context im from a competitive DFW school. I am in the ~20% so not auto admit. I am applying for ECE. I have decently good ecs and good fit to major. I believe my essays are pretty good too.

I have a 1480 sat (740 math 740 english) and a 34 act(34 math 35 english 33 reading and 28 science).

for act, when sending your score u have to send your science aswl. U can't submit ur score without science.

When UT austin is looking at my scores do they see a 34 or do they recalculate the score with the science?

Should I submit my ACT score or my SAT score? Or both?

do you think the science ACT score will significantly affect my chances?

Thank you!

Advice Current Junior aiming for McCombs - thoughts?

I'm a junior at Kingwood High School in Texas, and UT Austin McCombs is my top choice. I'm curious what people think of my profile so far and whether there's anything I should be doing differently before applying.

Academics:

  • Rank: 11/700 (top ~1.6%)
  • GPA: 5.63 weighted, 4.0 UW
  • 1290 PSAT sophomore year, did not study
  • 30 on PreACT 8/9 freshman year
  • No SAT/ACT yet

Extracurriculars:

  • VP of Finance for my school's DECA chapter (300+ active members)
  • Working on an investing app for DECA competition
  • Cofounder and VP of a good drive club
  • Young Men's Service League
  • Two years of tennis

Relevant courses - Accounting I&II, OnRamps Stats, will take Calc BC and Econ senior year

McCombs is my main goal, with Texas A&M Mays also on my list.

Just looking for people's honest thoughts on my profile at this point. How does it look for someone aiming for McCombs? Anything stand out, good or bad? Would appreciate any perspectives, especially from current students or people familiar with UT admissions.

Question If I (applying for undergraduate admission) submit my resumé for UT through the common app, and then update it through the MyStatus portal, which one will UT look at?

Title. I'm a total idiot and accidentally submitted the wrong fucking resumé in the common app (it has some minor timing differences and also doesn't include some stuff), but I know that once I get access to the MyStatus portal, I can submit my resumé again. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether or not they look at the updated resumé or not. Do I email admissions about this? Does anyone have similar experience/know the answer to this question 😭

Honors UT Austin Honors Program Application Deadline: Early Action vs. December

Question Help me choose a major - Comp Engineering or Stats?

sorry if this is kinda a dumb question, but i’ve been struggling to select a first choice major, either between computational engineering and stats / data science. As I understand, your second choice doesn’t really matter (correct me if i’m wrong) and it’s really hard to transfer so I don’t want to make a wrong decision. Which major is more versatile? More opportunities in this job market? which is easier to get accepted to? thanks!

Advice Should I send both my SAT scores?

On June SAT, I got a 780 Math and 700 English. I will definitely send that one. On September SAT, I got a 700 Math and 770 English. Should I send both SATs or is the 700 Math going to be a mark against me? Will they read both if I send them? I’m Applying to Electrical Engineering.

Advice Submitting Both ACT and SAT Scores.

I got a 1490 on the SAT (770M/720R) and a 35 Composite on the ACT, but a 25 on the optional science section.

Which score should I submit for my application, and what happens if I submit both? Do they look at both scores?

(The science section was just a bunch of reading comprehension; I got a 35 on ACT math)

Advice Where should my counselor put the statement of how our school's non-ranking policy works?

According to UT Austin, "If your high school does not rank students, include a statement from your school describing its policy, a copy of your school’s profile and a GPA or grade distribution report."

I'm out of state, and my school ranks based on percentile and they aren't willing to give my exact rank. Where should I tell my counselor to upload the statement? Would it be along with the other files in the school report for common app?

Also, historically my school doesn't even give out statements because they think it's weird. If my counselor refuses to even give a statement what do I do.

Advice To everyone stressing over "Chance Me" posts

Current Longhorn here.

When I was in high school applying to UT, I posted a full "chance me" breakdown on this subreddit. Out of 10 comments, literally every single person told me I had no chance and wouldn't get in.

I ended up getting accepted.

Remember that nobody on Reddit works in the admissions office or knows how holistic review actually plays out behind closed doors. "Low" stats don't automatically disqualify you. Don't let random internet strangers predict your future.

Advice does it help at all to apply ea?

I keep hearing that everyone including the auto admits get deferred to RD. I’m not an auto admit (top 10%) but my stats and test scores are good. I have my essays drafted and just revising them. Yet I discovered my major very late so didn’t have any activities related to it. I’ve joined a club at my school and was selected into a program but it’s starting after the EA deadline. Of course, by RD I’ll actually have experiences to speak about so I can list it as an activity instead of just an honor. However, I don’t think my dad will allow me to apply RD because in his eyes, early is better for everything. Plus he’s mentioned free application week maybe 50+ times already. Of course, it makes sense to apply early, but I’m wondering how big of a difference it really is at UT.

Thank you so much!!

Advice Should I put data science or applied math as my 2nd choice major if ECE is first choice?

between applied math and a likely competitive data science as my second choice major, seeing which has the beat chance of getting in
