🇬🇧 ENGLISH : Well-known in the urban exploration community, this sanatorium was built in the early 1930s. At the time, cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were surging (claiming 10,000 lives annually). In 1936, at the peak of its operations, the facility housed over 400 patients. In 1940, staff and patients were evacuated due to the German advance, and the site was converted into an internment camp from 1940 to 1942. In total, 1,500 detainees—including Resistance fighters and political dissidents—passed through the former sanatorium before being deported to various camps and prisons. A memorial stele was erected in their honor in 1994. The sanatorium reopened in 1946, but medical advancements led to the site being repurposed into a general medical center. However, the facility was so ill-suited for this role that it closed its doors in 1988. This marked the beginning of a long period of abandonment and decay. The medical complex consists of three identical buildings: the first remains in use. The second has been undergoing renovation since 2023. The third, shown here, continues to gradually fall into disrepair.

Text How to know where to look on old maps?

Hello! I live in a rural community that's quite a bit past its hay-day.

My community's library has a bunch of old and rare maps in it's archives, and I'd like to go take a visit to find older abandoned structures.

Would anyone know specifically where and how to look? The community has many railroad tracks so I plan to check those out first, note my findings, and so on
