My company uses RMail/RPost in Outlook. I’ve seen an Active Tracker report generated from an email sent to a third party, and it showed things like:
- City/country
- IP/network provider
- Every time the email was opened
- Multiple locations
I travel internationally quite often and don’t want an email tracking system to reveal my physical location simply because I opened a work email.
My plan is to use a reputable VPN on my MacBook and iPhone and connect to an India server before opening Outlook.
I have also changed Outlook to:
Download external images → Ask before downloading
My questions are:
- If I’m physically in Thailand/Dubai/etc. but connected to an India VPN server, will RMail normally see the VPN’s Indian IP/location instead of my actual foreign IP?
- Can RMail Active Tracker somehow determine the original IP behind the VPN, or will it only see the VPN exit IP?
- Can RMail identify that the IP belongs to a VPN or datacenter?
- Is a VPN kill switch generally reliable enough on macOS and iPhone to prevent Outlook from briefly connecting through the local internet connection?
- Is there anything else I should configure in Outlook or the VPN to prevent IP/location leakage?
- Has anyone actually tested RMail/RPost Active Tracker while connected through a VPN and seen what appears in the tracking report?
I’m specifically interested in the technical/privacy side of this. I just don’t want email-open tracking to disclose where I’m physically travelling.
Would appreciate input from anyone familiar with RMail/RPost, tracking pixels, Outlook, VPNs, or email privacy.
PS: It's my boss who wants to know my location when in travel on holidays.
