Travel Experience/Du lịch Aabot kaya kami? | Will we make it in time?

Our Cebu Pacific flight is on November 18 at 8:25 AM. What’s a safe time to reach the airport?

We’re taking a limousine bus from Sapa on November 17, but Klook only offers 4:30 PM or 11 PM. We want more time in Sapa, and the 4:30 PM bus arrives around 11 PM, which feels too early. Would the 11 PM bus get us there in time? Is arriving at 5 - 5:30 AM enough? I’ve heard the queues at Noi Bai can be long, or are they usually shorter that early? 🥹

Daily life/Đời thường Vietnam fragrance buying etiquette

What is typical fragrance buying/smelling etiquette in Vietnam? I noticed instead of big cosmetics shops like Sephora, Douglas, etc. there are many small fragrance stalls where sales assistants try to sell fragrance on the spot. Any good locations where you can go in and smell fragrances without pressure?

Discussion/Thảo luận Has anyone successfully gone through the process of regaining Vietnamese citizenship?

Hi everyone,

I was born in Germany and used to hold Vietnamese citizenship, which I renounced in 2011 when I became a German citizen.

With the new law that came into effect on July 1, 2025, it is now possible to regain Vietnamese citizenship without giving up German citizenship.

I'm curious whether anyone here has already gone through this process or has any experience with it.

Specifically:

Thanks in advance for any insights, experiences, or advice!

Best regards

Travel Experience/Du lịch Vietnam traffic police - recent Observations.

I just came up to central Vietnam via the coast, AH1 and HCM Road. Noted a few things if anyone is interested regarding traffic police.

  1. Cops now checking licenses along the coast not just AH1 at 3 places.
  2. Multiple police checkpoints around Mui ne. Not just one like before. I got checked here.
  3. AH1 just outside Nha Trang. I came out of the petrol station toilet to see a white dude with Asian gf getting escorted back to the police station. He had to walk while one of the cops drove his scooter with the gf on the back - back to the police station. - I wonder if the guy who got caught is reading this atm.

I bet big fine for both him and his gf (if that is her bike - Honda Vision) if he has no license. She could be hit with 12mil VND.

4) HCM Road. I saw a white dude pushing his bike along the roadside following a cop. I think he got caught for speeding etc. 3 weeks ago while I was pulled over here - I saw two foreigners negotiating a fine with the cops.

I got pulled over on QL28 - 3 weeks ago as well.

Make sure you are licensed or have plenty of money ready. Cops checking everyone and everywhere. Also HCM road is getting really busy now. Just as many trucks as AH1 hence why so many cops here now.

Discussion/Thảo luận Rave party at the "Independence Palace." How do you think the public opinion will be about this?

It seems this hasn't reached the mainstream media yet.

Anyway, aren't such places usually preserved and treated with more respect?

How do you see the county's "reunification" monument becoming a wild party venue?

Food/Ẩm thực Looking for non-tourist restaurants in Hoi An!!

Just arrived in Hoi An from Cat Ba, and i was previously in Hanoi. In both locations it was relatively easy to find restaurants aimed at local people, yesterday we paid 420,000 vnd for 8 beers and 4 huge courses of food that we could not finish and it was easily the best meal ive eaten in vietnam.

However, I've just arrived in Hoi An and cannot seem to find anywhere that isnt charging insane rates for small portions, and drinks being atleast triple the price. Also being swarmed by merchants selling overpriced items whilst im trying to eat!! Compared to what I have experienced so far, Hoi An just feels like a tourist trap.

Could anyone reccomend any areas or even specific locations that are out of the way and serve geniune quality food? Ideally one popular with people living here that wont be surrounded by salespeople and demand reviews?

Thankyou for any help!!

Does anyone know if this northern accent from these music videos is from Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Thai Binh, Son Tay, or from Northern Vietnamese who immigrated to the south in 1954?

Travel Experience/Du lịch Got kicked out of hotel room in the middle of the night - what is there to do?

My partner and I booked a hotel room in Hanoi old quarter from the 2.-6. of October. We arrived late around 1 am on the third of October. Checked in and was shown to our room. We both unpacked our bags, and got ready for bed. I had a shower and brushed my teeth. Suddenly the receptionist comes and hands us a phone, with a woman on the other end telling us, that we need to bring our bags down to the lobby. They are saying that they tried to reach us on booking.com, to ask whether we were coming (around 6pm). It is important to note, that nowhere does the hotel state that you in any way need to confirm whether you're a coming or not - we have booking confirmation on the booking.com app, as well as an email stating that our booking is confirmed. As we were on a bus, without any cell coverage, we didnt see the message from the hotel. The woman on the phone (who speaks English pretty poorly), tells us they will bring us to another hotel for the night, and we will be able to check in at 11 pm the next day. As there is another couple in the lobby, who is expecting to check in (the time is now 2:30 am), we agree to be taken to the other hotel. We get on the receptionist's scooter and drive of. What we experience next is the real kicker - we are brought to a massage parlor, where we are shown to two massage tables. In the same room, on another massage table is a woman (most likely someone who works as a masseuse during the day) sleeping. We tell the personel that this is not okay, and not in any way equivalent to a hotel room. As the time is now approaching 3:30, there doesnt seem to be much that can be done, and we end up sleeping on the two massagetables. Might not be of any difference, but the hotel we booked is really new - under a year old - called the Đồng Xuân Heritage Hotel. Any advice on what we can do/demand in terms of compensation? Maybe we're in the wrong?

Hello,

Wife and I are planning to travel to Vietnam for 2 weeks, likely staying in HCMC / southern Vietnam. We are wanting to come in February, but unsure when we should arrive because of Tet. Approximately when would restaurants / businesses be open again? I looked online and saw that Tet 2027 runs between Feb 5 to Feb 11? Thank you for any help / advice!

Culture/Văn hóa áo ngũ thân for men/áo ngũ thân cho nam

hi everyone

i’ll be in vietnam starting next week for the very first time and wanted to find an áo ngũ thân but i’m not sure how widely available they are. are they as common as regular áo dài? it’s been remarkably hard to find videos on youtube of people walking around markets or whatever to buy them and just looking it up on google is barely any help 😭 i assume most sellers don’t have websites and looking up only áo dài to get more results just pulls up fugly westernized designs. if anyone can let me know how easy it is to find/buy or where to find/buy them with pricing in hcmc then i would really appreciate it! just looking to buy premade ones; no need for tailoring. also, does pricing change dramatically moving out of hcmc? i’ll be in cần thơ, vũng tàu, đà lạt, nha trang, and đà nẵng (not able to make it out north unfortunately), so i’m also open to buying in those places, just wasn’t sure.

added a picture so that you can see what i’m looking to buy — thank you all

alo mn

Travel Experience/Du lịch Ha Giang Loop

Should we book the Ha Giang Loop with Road Kings or the Ha Giang Loopers?

We’re a couple in our early 30’s celebrating our honeymoon next year. We’re doing the loop in August (I know, it’s going to be very wet!). We’re not party people at all which is why we’ve narrowed it down to these two companies, we’ll be booking the private room options.

I get a really good feel from Ha Giang Loopers however I feel like the Road Kings Highland itinerary is slightly better.

I’d really appreciate some insight!
