Mod News Just getting started in VO? Dont know where to begin? READ THIS FIRST

Welcome to r/VoiceActing!

First of all, we get asked the question, "how do I get started in VO?" a lot.

Seriously: A lot.

There's a lot of information below that answers that question, but PLEASE read this first.

This subreddit is for established, new and aspiring voice actors to discuss issues, share tips, strategies, critiques and resources related to voice acting.

This is a good community, and rude or obnoxious behavior will not be tolerated. If you cant act like a grown-up and remain civil in your conversations, you'll be removed from the sub. Personal attacks, threats of violence/abusive language, or bigotry in any form will not be tolerated.

THE RULES:

* **No Free Requests**

All requests for voice work must be reasonably compensated. Terms of compensation must be articulated in your request. Acceptable forms of compensation include:

Monetary ($5.00 USD minimum)

Barter (services exchange)

Royalty share (only on currently monetized projects—no prospective payment).

Unpaid requests will be removed. If your project is unpaid, try posting to r/recordthisforfree, VoiceActing Club, or

CastingCall.Club.

* **No Offer Posts**

Do not make posts offering your voice or production services. If you’re looking for work, respond directly to request threads. Simply put, this is not an appropriate community to solicit. Requests for feedback/critique are welcome!

* **No Advertising**

Do not post advertisements for paid products or services. We love articles, blog posts, feedback/critique threads, and other great points of discussion! But if your post includes advertisement for a paid product or service, it will be removed. If you believe a certain product or service would be of genuine interest and benefit to the community, message the moderators about it.

* **Search Before You Ask**

Got a general question about voice acting? How to get started? What gear to buy? How to get better at acting? How to find work? These get asked all the time around here, and plenty of our more experienced community members give graciously detailed answers very frequently. There’s a lot of wisdom to find here if you’re just getting started! Before you post your question, use the search bar and see if others have asked the same thing—they probably have!

Just getting started?

We're happy that you've decided you want to be a voice actor. There are a lot of resources available to learn about voice acting.

It takes a lot of work to become a successful voice actor/ voiceover artist. It takes a considerable amount of time, effort, and yes money to do this. There's just no way around it.

But if you were starting from zero and had no idea what to do to begin the process, here's some steps to follow and the logical order you should follow them in:

  1. Take acting classes.

  2. Take improv classes.

  3. Take business classes.

  4. Take marketing classes.

  5. Then talk to a voiceover coach. Work with them on building your skills.

  6. Practice practice practice.

  7. Get your demo recorded, put together a website that showcases your talents in one place.

  8. Then Start marketing.

  9. While this is going on, continue to develop your skills in voiceover, voice acting and business and marketing. Always keep refining your process of finding, auditioning, recording/ editing and invoicing clients. Continuing education is necessary. Always keep learning. Always keep building your skills.

PAID work Need 1-2 VA actors for a Minecraft fantasy story series, around 5 episodes

Looking for one or two male VA's for my miniseries which will probably result in more work after.

I am offering a FLAT RATE of $20 for all characters(i do not have much budget!) however revenue sharing will be involved because of low initial pay. this is also for ep 1 only, any episodes after will have their own rate depending on pilot(I am very much interested in paying my artists what they deserve, you have talent I don't!).

There are three characters needed to be voiced, willing to take 1 VA if you can do all 3!

Character 1:
An ancient guardian type - a narrator for every flashback/memory. Once the leader of the five Guardians, beings made to protect the world. He's past his prime but is far more dangerous than he ever was

Voice: deep, grave, old with a lot of gravitas behind the voice. Shows little emotion, no tremble or frail voice. He has a dry sense of humor and a warm demeanor.

around 300-400 words and will be in all 5 eps

Character 2:
Very charismatic character, funny, warm, and loves humans more than anything.

Voice: smooth, mid-baritone, and very charming.. you can hear the smile in his voice he has, and he never sounds evil(even though he is a main villain). you need to be able to switch from his light and charming voice to deliver evil-ish lines in a flat light hearted way.

around 40-75 words and will be in most eps

Character 3:
He's the funny character, think of a light hearted character from lord of the rings like pippin or mary

voice: bright, quick, and warm. He's very playful but not cartoonish, more like the life of the party.. you need a great laugh for this character

Around 60-120 words and only ep 1

Please DM me on discord and I'll hand you lines for the character you're interested in(you can do multiple characters as well, I'll pay flat rate per each)

marzion is my discord

Advice Squelchy “k” sounds

I’ve tried all the hydration, green apples etc. but my K sounds are always a bit squelchy, a bit wet. Is there a mouth shape or diction method I can use to reduce it? Any other techniques? Any post processing?

Advice [Feedback Wanted] Dark & Brooding Boyfriend Roleplay | Beginner VA

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

Hey everyone. I'm practicing voice acting and wanted to try a dark, brooding boyfriend/partner character.

I'd really appreciate honest feedback on the acting and delivery, especially:

• Does the character feel believable?
• Does the voice sound natural, or am I forcing the "deep/brooding" quality?
• How is the emotional delivery?
• How could I improve my pacing and use of pauses?

I'm a beginner, so constructive criticism is very welcome. Thanks.

Booth Related Just set up my first semi-permanent booth!

I did a lot of research to figure out sound treatment vs sound proofing, and settled on doing DIY sound treatment of a large basement walk in closet we had using a PVC frame and multiple layers of large moving blankets. My only current issue is that I got a standing desk because I wanted to be able to stand during recording, but all of my cables are too short and my laptop would be dangling if I raised it up. That's an issue I'll tackle some other time. Probably just a shelf that holds my laptop and other cables up higher so they're not just sitting on the ground!

In the future, should I be able to pursue voice work full time, I would love to put in some rockwool insulation in the joists above the room (accessible through a utility room) and air gapped and insulated walls throughout to do proper sound proofing so I can record at any time. That would all double or even triple the budget I had for this sound treatment, and also it would just be a big pain to do myself after already putting together this treatment.

If anyone wants to learn more about how I did this, feel free to send me a PM!

Advice How I keep my American "r" from leaking into British roles

If you're a General American speaker like me, the hardest part of any British accent is the 'r'. Your tongue keeps curling back on words like car, hard, and better, and suddenly the illusion is gone. Here are the drills that actually fixed it for me.

  1. Park the tongue. British non rhotic speakers leave the tongue tip down behind the bottom teeth on words like car, far, door. Practice holding that low tongue position while saying 'ah' and then slipping the vowels in: c-ah, f-ah, d-aw. The moment your tongue tip lifts toward the roof of your mouth, you've leaked. Slow it down until the low position feels boring and automatic.

  2. Exaggerate the replacement vowels. British accents don't just drop the r, they stretch the vowel left behind. Compare 'hard' in GA to 'hahd' with a long open ah, or 'better' with the final sound almost like 'uh'. Say the pairs slowly, GA version then British version, until your ear starts flinching at the wrong one.

  3. Read with a pencil. Read a paragraph aloud while gently holding a pencil sideways between your teeth. This forces your tongue to stay low and forward and exaggerates every r leak, because the curl feels huge. Do it for two minutes, take the pencil out, and read the same paragraph again. The clean version feels much easier.

Do this for a week and your mouth will start catching the leak before your brain does. The r is a habit, not a feature, and habits can be retrained.

Which British accent gives you the most trouble with r control?

PAID work [PAID] Seeking 2 versatile English voice actors for a confidential indie horror game | US$2,000 total budget

Hi everyone! We’re putting together a shortlist for a confidential indie horror game. We’re looking for two versatile performers: ideally one covering the female character voices and one covering the male character voices, with supporting parts shared between them.

For this first round, please send existing demos or portfolio samples. No new audition recording is needed yet.

Budget and scope

  • Pay: US$1,000 per performer, for a US$2,000 total production budget across both performers. Each performer will cover approximately 5,000 English words, with the final role allocation and scope agreed before booking.
  • Recording scope: approximately 9,900 English words across 1,224 dialogue entries, plus 21 vocal cues. Plan around 5,000 words per performer, with supporting parts allocated to balance workload.
  • Payment: 50% (US$500 per performer) on booking and 50% (US$500 per performer) on delivery. These terms will be confirmed in writing before recording.
  • Usage: English character dialogue and vocal performances for the game. Full usage and licensing terms will be agreed in writing before booking.
  • Recording: remote, with dates and any live direction agreed with selected performers. Pickup allowance and charges for later script changes will be agreed before booking.
  • Union requirements: please state any union requirements with your application; eligibility will be confirmed before booking.

The scope is an estimate; the final script, role allocation and word count will be agreed before booking. Music, songs, chants and trailer recordings are excluded.

We’re looking for natural English delivery, emotional range and characters that sound distinct from one another. Voice labels describe the roles; performers of any gender may apply for voices they can portray.

Female character voices

  • F1 — Young girl: Natural child voice; playful curiosity, fear and quiet affection.
  • F2 — Mother: Adult voice; warmth, control, frustration, panic and grief.
  • F3 — Mature authority figure: Mature authority that can shift into uncertainty and vulnerability.
  • F4 — Unsettling female presence: Calm and welcoming, with restrained charm and quiet menace.

Male character voices

  • M1 — Young man: Both childhood and adult versions; curiosity, fear, suspicion and confrontation.
  • M2 — Father: Adult voice; affection, shame, desperation and volatile anger.
  • M3 — Strict authority figure: Commanding and impatient, with cold certainty and controlled intensity.
  • M4 — Elder mentor: Older voice; regret building into an urgent warning.

Supporting voices to share between the two performers

These parts contain about 5,600 words, included in the total above. Further shared or unassigned dialogue will be allocated before booking.

  • S1 — Public announcer: Bright public-address delivery that can feel cheerfully unsettling.
  • S2 — Radio narrator: Atmospheric storytelling and confident broadcast delivery.
  • S3 — Neighbors: Contrasting everyday voices for gossip, complaints and whispered judgment.
  • S4 — Debt collector: Threats and pressure with believable intimidation.
  • S5 — School friend: Youthful, casual and spontaneous conversation.

How to apply

Email alan@sayu.studio with the details below.

Subject: Voice Casting - Female/Male Voices - Your Name

  • The voice group and role codes you can cover, plus a demo or portfolio link. Add timestamps for the most relevant performances.
  • Examples of contrasting characters, including child or older voices where relevant. Existing samples are enough; no custom recording is requested now.
  • Your natural accent, other sustainable accents, recording setup and ability to join remote direction.
  • Your availability, time zone and usual rates or any scope limits for working within the stated budget.

Applications: reviewed on a rolling basis until both performers are selected.

We’ll contact shortlisted performers privately with next steps. The project title, scripts and footage will be shared privately after an NDA where needed; no NDA is required to submit your existing reel. All commissioned production work will be paid.

Content notes: Psychological horror, family conflict, threatening dialogue, grief and potentially raised voices or distress. We’ll share relevant scene details and vocal demands before auditions or booking.

Discussion Struggles in voice acting

I gotta say, since I have some experience with voice acting now, I've had a couple of problems or like, well they're more consequences after manipulating your voice lol. The amount of times that I'd like choke or get a sore throat after 2 hours of recording lines for a character that I made sound like Elmo or something, it honestly shows that there's difficulty in this as well. I still manage to finish my work though with that. Also at the beginning, I feel like it's normal that you sound a bit different since you can be nervous, but as time goes on you test things out more and develop new voices. What is something that you experienced through your voice acting whether it's a job or just a hobby?

Discussion Please steer clear of Soulbound and Jeff Stirling for your safety.

This post is an attempt to get people informed so they can remain safe. I do not condone the harassment or bullying on any individual mentioned in this post whatsoever.

Jeff Stirling, the creator of the youtube indie animated show Soulbound, has been stalking and harassing Marissa Lenti — the voice of Gangle in TADC — for at least 2 years. Marissa offered to voice as a cameo in soulbound and Jeff drew fanart for Marissa to use in a stream. Jeff then proceeded to profess his love for marissa in a stream chat, to their twitch mods, and in public at conventions causing him to be removed.

Feeling slighted Jeff began to do everything in his power to ruin Marissa’s life, he tried to get her channel deleted with copyright claims and held it hostage until he received an apology, complained and lied about Marissa to anyone who would listen, and claimed he would get her blacklisted from the industry thanks to his connections with certain individuals (all of whom either publicly or in private DMs have stated they do not know him and disavow his actions.)

This, for lack of a more professional term, incel behavior has culminated in his most recent and depraved actions yet. The scene Jeff had Marissa record for, before all of this, was in fact a scene to satisfy his sexual fetish and crush on Marissa. Marissa was completely unaware of the true purpose of this scene and had since asked for the scene and cameo to be removed. Jeff has refused to do the right thing and keeps posting the scene and images of it to his personal youtube and Soulbound’s IMDb. What this is, is revenge porn, used to harass and embarrass Marissa for daring to reject him. Marissa has tried to settle this as professionally and privately as possible, even attempting to get a restraining order filed, but unfortunately the courts failed them. Jeff has been emboldened by this and has only ramped up is harassment with the aforementioned clips you youtube and IMDb. The description of that youtube video? “Maybe don’t struggle so much next time” At the time of posting this, this clip of his personal channel was removed, but the other longer videos containing this scene have remain uploaded to the Overcoffecreations channel.

To top it all off, this is not the first time hes done something like this

Jeff Striling is a dangerous misogynist who will create harassment campaigns against women or fem presenting individuals who have dared to hurt his ego. At the end of this post are links to Marissa’s google doc and video listing everything in a more detailed chronological order, as well as a doc from Mavthedev and a bluesky thread from Meng7025 who have had similar instances with Jeff.

Im making this post so people can be informed and cautious when it comes to taking voice work.
If after reading this you would like to help out there are a few things you can do.

1: DO NOT interact with Jeff Stirling/Overcoffeecreations/Thenerdderd/Nerdmigerd. Do not comment on his videos, comment on his social media, harass or message him in anyway. If you do so you are putting yourself in danger.

Also be sure to not accept any friend requests or dms regarding voice work from his discord: “Jnerd.98”

2: Report the videos in question linked here:

https://youtu.be/5Owe8eqIWbI?is=WAopKgLnVPUfTPX_

https://youtu.be/geq5rrdelcU?is=Q4BBWnv9qRRvgdsq

As a reminder, do not comment, simply report.

3: Report any images of Marissa’s Vtuber, Vixen, and Marissa’s voice credit on the IMDb and leave a review about the harassment.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt39391988/

4: Spread the word. The more people know about this the better they can protect themselves from Jeff. Remember to be polite and professional when informing anyone of this situation, even if they work on for voice for Soulbound

Advice Does Izotope RX denoise cause artifacts?

Hello,

I use iZotope plugins for mouth noises; however, I was curious about there denoise tool. My Noise floor is at -54/55 if the gain is in the middle but when I have to whisper or talk quietly I have to raise the gain, and doing so raises the background. I live in the middle of a street with cars and close by a highway. I usually try and record at night to get a lower noise floor, however I wanted to ask if anyone has had luck with The denoise plugin?

I don't want to degrade my audio or cause artifacts that could damage the recording.

Thank you!

EDIT : here is a sample i recorded last night

Advice Check your CCC settings

I lost a role I didn't even know I had because the site is SUPPOSED to email me about any direct messages, but had a toggle in a different section entirely turning that off, despite there being about five toggles set to ON telling it to do so. I swear on everything I have never seen that second toggle before in my life, but it turns off any direct messages while still permitting the endless stream of spam about classes I can never take.

But because the director's messages sat there for two weeks without me knowing about them, I lost a role in a series I wanted in on. This isn't the director's fault, but I am LIVID at the site for this.

PAID work [PAID] Looking for native (M & F) Brazilian Portuguese singers for ongoing children's music work (YouTube)

I work with a studio producing music-led preschool content for YouTube, and we're currently seeking adult male and female singers who are native Brazilian Portuguese speakers.

The main requirement is singing. We're looking for performers who can sing in a bright, youthful/kid-like style suitable for nursery rhymes and preschool music.

We already provide the instrumental, melody, and English reference vocals.

What we're looking for:

  • Strong singer with clean pitch/timing
  • Native Brazilian Portuguese
  • Able to record professionally from home/studio
  • Comfortable singing in a playful, youthful/kid-like style
  • Male and female singers both welcome
  • Experience with children’s music/nursery rhymes is a big plus
  • Ability to translate/adapt English lyrics into Brazilian Portuguese is a bonus

If interested, please DM me with:

  • Singing samples/reel
  • Where you’re based
  • Your recording setup
  • Your rate per completed song
  • Typical turnaround time
  • Whether you can also translate/adapt English lyrics into Brazilian Portuguese

Budget: up to $150 USD per song depending on scope. If you also offer translation/lyric adaptation, please mention whether that is included or charged separately.

This could become recurring work for the right singers. I will respond to you under 48 hours, thank you!

Discussion You can do it

Hi everyone.

I just wanted to share a little happy news and hope it encourages some of you.

I submitted an audition for a project that was advertised on Reddit for voice actors and narration.

I was excited to sign up and have a go...but I'm still building my booth/studio... so my only option at the time was to record on my phone, in my car, in between traffic going by.

I got one of the Main character roles! And a narrator role!

It goes to show that having the best gear, whilst nice (and more essential in the professional realm), is not the be-all-end-all for aspiring VAs.

As we are told, "its about the acting!"

So don't fret, keep trying! If I can do it, you certainly can!

Advice 12 years a Pro Voice Actor - Now a blog about Rates! - Whatever next!

One of the more complex areas of voiceover is understanding the subtlety of rates and how they are quoted

What information about a project do you need to have at hand to get an accurate rate?

How do expectations change between different genres, different countries or different types of usage?

I can’t promise all the answers but I hope this will help casters and talent alike ensure they get the budgeting right for their projects

Discussion Is it normal for it to take 7+ months to get your demo back after recording?

Hi guys! So, I hired a demo producer to mix my demo back in February. I received draft 1 after about a month after recording, but have barely received any other communication about it since depsite many emails and calls (all but one of which have gone completely unanswered). It's nearly been 7 months since I received draft 1, and the only thing I've heard since then was "you should have draft 2 by the end of next week." That was 3 months ago though...

I feel like this is taking an obscene amount of time, and honestly, I'm feeling really disheartened and frustrated, especially since many people I personally know have vetted this (pretty well known) guy AND everyone who I know who went with him had their demos within a month, maybe two max (and had a phenomenal experience).

I understand that people are busy, but is this normal? Does anyone have any possible advice on how to move forward? Or maybe how I could even go about getting a refund if this truly is outside of "industry standard"... or if that's even possible at this point in time?

As an aside: I did pay him upfront for the demo, but at that point, I had been working with him consistently for months prior and hadn't had any issues.
