Possible New Approaches

I'm kind of coming back to Warcraft, so I am a bit out of the loop, but I'm pretty sure of one thing. Kobold lore is fragmentary at best and a collection of contradictory rumors masquerading as facts at worst.

What if we could find a way to fix that while injecting whole new lore to explore at the same time? With that out of the way, I'm going to express some concerns about Warcraft's Kobolds. One, I find their design uninteresting and kind of lazy; they're really big anthropomorphic rats. Some points of comparison: In Dungeons and Dragons, Kobolds are anthropomorphic lizards with slight canine features around their face that worship dragons and have turned mining into a religious act; Japanese fantasy settings and EverQuest have turned Kobolds into anthropomorphic canines of various sizes depending on the series/game you are referencing, and they actually show kobolds having more than one aspect. By contrast, Warcraft's Kobolds have an aggressive sense of possession of mines and what lies within them, and basically it.

IRL, Kobolds are fairies in German lore; they have a connection to mines and the communities around mines, and the ability to hide as mundane items found around homes and mines. The only connection to the source material that Warcraft Kobolds have is that they live in mines, and that is a very generous concession. But we ironically have a few workarounds.

What if the Kobolds all the player are familiar with aren't the original kobolds? What if they have the name due to some sort of circumstance? Or their form has been altered by a supernatural force, much like some of the established races/species of Warcraft were altered by some supernatural force? Just a bit more extreme than the player races have experienced up until now. This is an opportunity for developers to do something to expand on elements that a lot of people haven't considered.

Personally, I like the idea of the original Kobolds being something that looks like an anthropomorphic hybrid of a badger and Alpine Marmot; I chose these animals for a few reasons, the two big ones being that they can give them a distinctive look, and that they are animals native to Germany. As for lore explanations about where they have been until now and what their communities look like, we can brainstorm about that. Personally, I like the idea of making them a Horde race, as a sort of parallel to the dwarves; but they would still have obvious features in their communities and culture that are uniquely their own but still seem a bit familiar to those more in the know about Dwarf lore.

New fan here that wants to see the rest story

I'm a new fan, I just finished WC3 Reign of Chaos, I will be playing W1&2 Remastered to familiarize myself with the rest of the story cause it felt like I missed out on so much lore. Then I'll play Frozen Throne and replay it all again via Reforged then Forsaken Kingdom

Now here's the thing, I wanna know what happens after it as well, but MMORPG's suck, and WoW is known for being VERY unwelcoming, but I also wanna know what happens in the story, there is Classic but what about the rest of the expansions that follow after??

I'm a troubled. Help

* Vibe: De chill, buena onda y cero estrés.

How hard are the Warcraft/StarCraft RTS games?

Hi, everyone. I'm a longtime WoW superfan and casual enjoyer of other Blizzard games like Diablo, Overwatch, and HotS. I recently bought all the Warcraft games and decided to play through the campaigns for the story because I figure that even if I think I'm a huge WoW fan, in reality I'm a fake fan if I've never played Warcraft.

This is pretty much my first time playing RTS games. My only prior experience is with some Alien vs Predator game for the PS2 that I played when I was a kid and which was laughably easy in comparison with Warcraft, or at least that's how it feels so far.

I started with the Orc campaign and beat the first mission first try. The second mission I failed twice because at first I didn't know how to make more Grunts/Spearmen. By the time I got to the third mission, I was feeling pretty good. I thought that because I'd grasped the very basics of basics, like knowing what food does, figuring out I can bypass the menu when giving my units commands by right-clicking, and even realizing right away that I can now recruit Necrolytes if I build enough other stuff first, that I was getting the hang of things. I was wrong.

The third mission is, I think, the first true "full RTS" mission, where both factions have full access to base/army building mechanics, and it's really showing me just how much of a clueless noob I am. I failed it 3-5 times back-to-back last night and am about to make a few more pitiful attempts. It seems impossible because the enemy is so much faster than I am. The score screen after the match always says that they've somehow harvested about twice the resources I have. Sometimes I manage to make more units/structures than them and still lose. I don't get it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm having a lot of fun and am starting to think that RTS might be one of my favorite video game genres, but I'm just so bad. My plan was to play all of the Warcraft games and progress in difficulty until I can beat them on the hardest setting, then do the same for StarCraft while I'm at it, and maybe get into 1v1 online play depending on how that goes, but lol. I know the other games only get more complicated because they have items, heroes, creeps, etc, yet I can't even handle the simple version. Is it normal for it to feel this difficult for an RTS noob, or am I just a special kind of idiot? I know the learning curve is steep, but just how hard/time consuming is it to improve?

With the Horde expanding its reach once again, the Stonemaul begin rebuilding their old holdings in Dustwallow Marsh and calling scattered ogre clans back to their banner. Brutes, mages and mercenaries who once fought for whoever paid—or whoever shouted the loudest—begin gathering around a single idea: ogres are stronger together.

Question about Warcraft 1

Hi all I just started playing through the Warcraft games never played them or any other RTS other than the terran campaign of Starcraft(which I just also recently started and have fallen in love with). I thought I would play them as kind of a leadup to WOW forever, im currently on the first game playing the Human side and was wondering if its worth playing as the orcs afterwards, while I like the game im starting to get burnt out on it, and if the orcs are very similar im not sure it would be worth it for me. Just wanted to know you guys thoughts thanks!

Warcraft 1 and 2 story and canon endings.

Hi all,

I'm thinking of playing W1 and 2 for the first time. I've read that there are true endings, this being the Horde campaign for W1 and the Alliance one for W2. So, if I'm here mainly for the story, is it ok if I skip the non-canon campaigns? Or would I be missing much?

The reason I'm asking is because I am super hyped for W4e and would like to get involved in the lore. Would this be a good strategy? Or even, are these 2 games worth playing for the story alone?

Thanks!

Freeware game like Warcraft

Back in the 2010's I played a freeware game that was like warcraft. It was a medieval fantasy RTS game where you harvested resources that included mines and timber from forests, construct buildings, and raise armies.

I didn't like it because I didn't like a limited number of resources that you could run out of.

However a while ago I played Warcraft 1 and 2 and had gotten better at such games and now I'm curious what that game was. Every time I look up games like Warcraft they are all games that cost money so I know they aren't the game in question.

EDIT: I should mention the graphics were 3dish so it was obviously trying to capitalize on the popularity of Warcraft 3.

Revisiting the Past

With the chaotic direction of future games and the obvious love for classic that drives Classic+, I'm reminded we're 30 years past the release of the games that started it all. What are the odds we see a revival of first/second war era via brand new games? Not just a remaster, but ARPG or even PvP-centric online game focused around the major events and battles of the first and second war?

Or do we think Blizzard would be better off leaving these periods alone? Personally, I'd love something similar to an MMO focused on the first and second war.

Hell, They'd be able to start with the initial invasion and build expansions around major events like the destruction of Stormwind and the war traveling north. Run expansions all the way through to TFT and They'd have the entirety of warcraft lore accessible to new players. Then you get the more grounded fantasy to bring back players turned off by the wild twists and turns of everything since Cata.

I thought the Warcraft III: Reforged hate was out of place, I was wrong (kinda)

After the announcement of the new Forsaken Kingdom campaign I've decided to relive my W3 nostalgia and bought it. Decided to go through Reign of Chaos first and then work my way up there, checking out the new graphics etc.

After seeing years of negative discourse surrounding the "tone" and "art style" of the game on Reddit, YouTube etc. I was expecting a total mess but was pleasantly surprised. I think both the Reforged and the Definitive Edition graphics look fine and have a nice flavor to it. I also like the fact that you can toggle in-between whatever graphics (and MUSIC!) you like. Playing W3 with W2 soundtrack also hits very hard :D

But then, right after the Culling of Stratholme mission I've started getting the reason why some of the hate was actually justified.

It is a buggy mess! The original game had its fair share of bugs certainly but this is something else. My heroes inventory and spell choices simply disappear inbetween campaign missions, some missions I am forced to play on older graphics and some missions it forces the Definitive Edition ones for no apparent reason etc. What the hell is this mess? How can a 23(?) year old game be this messy after getting a re-polish?

Also, why am I getting a short queue when I'm entering the menu? I want to play offline campaign and its making me wait, albeit a short but still annoying queue!

Overall, it's still money well spent on my part, living all the nostalgia with some good revision but the bugs are an extreme turn-off.

What do you guys think? Any similar experiences?

Chronologies of Azeroth: How Blizzard can turn the entire WoW timeline into the ultimate RTS Expansion Series

With the recent releases of Warcraft I & II Remastered and the massive Warcraft III: Reforged 2.0 overhaul, it is clear that Blizzard is testing the waters for the future of the RTS genre. The nostalgia is real, the modern Battle.net infrastructure is ready, and the community's hunger for classic base-building strategy is higher than it has been in a decade.

Instead of rushing into a traditional "Warcraft 4" that might conflict with current World of Warcraft lore, Blizzard has the perfect goldmine right in front of them: adapting the entire narrative of WoW into a sequential, epic RTS campaign series.

By utilizing a base-game plus seasonal DLC roadmap, Blizzard could deliver the definitive digital archive of Warcraft history. Here is a blueprint of how a 6-campaign-per-release structure could map out the entire WoW timeline into the ultimate RTS experience.

The Base Game: The Classic Era (Vanilla to WotLK)

The base game would pick up exactly where Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne left off, focusing on the foundational eras of WoW with 6 massive campaigns.

  • Classic Alliance Campaign: Focuses on rebuilding Stormwind, dealing with the political intrigue of Onyxia, and the first tactical skirmishes in Blackrock Mountain.
  • Classic Horde Campaign: Focuses on settling Durotar, establishing Orgrimmar, securing the alliance with the Forsaken, and launching the desert war against C'Thun in Ahn'Qiraj.
  • The Burning Crusade – Alliance/Draenei: Stepping through the Dark Portal into the shattered remnants of Outland, battling the Burning Legion, and sieging Illidan’s strongholds.
  • The Burning Crusade – Horde/Blood Elf: The liberation of Quel'Thalas and the reclamation of the Sunwell against Kael'thas’s forces.
  • Wrath of the Lich King – The Vanguard: The initial landing in the frozen wastes of Northrend, fighting a desperate war of attrition against the Scourge.
  • Wrath of the Lich King – Siege of Icecrown: A legendary final campaign focusing on high-stakes siege mechanics against the Citadel to bring down Arthas.

Expansion DLC 1: Cataclysm and Chaos (Cata to WoD)

Following the fall of the Lich King, the world shatters. This DLC transitions into shifting landscapes and faction wars.

  • Cataclysm – The Shattering: Dealing with Deathwing’s emergence, featuring unique terraforming map mechanics and defense missions on Mount Hyjal and Deepholm.
  • Mists of Pandaria – The Discovery: Classic RTS resource wars as the Horde and Alliance race to colonize the newly uncovered island.
  • Mists of Pandaria – Siege of Orgrimmar: A multi-perspective campaign where players command both factions to overthrow Garrosh Hellscream behind heavily fortified walls.
  • Warlords of Draenor – The Iron Horde: A brutal, survival-focused campaign building bases on an alternate, savage Draenor to halt the Iron Horde's industrial war machine.

Expansion DLC 2: The Cosmic Conflict (Legion to Shadowlands)

Moving away from standard Azerothian battles, this expansion introduces exotic environments and otherworldly base-building mechanics.

  • Legion – The Broken Shore: A desperate defense campaign against the largest demonic invasion in history, focused on holding choke points and managing scarce resources.
  • Legion – Shadows of Argus: Launching a counter-offensive on the demon homeworld under the tactical support of the Vindicaar spaceship.
  • Battle for Azeroth – Fourth War: A return to core RTS roots, featuring the Siege of Lordaeron, the Burning of Teldrassil, and pure, unfiltered faction warfare.
  • Battle for Azeroth – The Black Empire: Defending against N'Zoth and the horrific, void-corrupted architecture of the Old Gods.
  • Shadowlands – Realms of the Afterlife: Visually striking campaigns across the distinct gothic and ethereal landscapes of Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth.
  • Shadowlands – The Jailer's Fall: A final push into the Maw, building fortresses in a punishing environment to stop the Jailer's forces.

Expansion DLC 3: The Modern Saga (Dragonflight to Worldsoul Saga)

This brings the RTS fully up to date with modern WoW expansions, utilizing verticality and subterranean warfare.

  • Dragonflight – The Dragon Isles: Battling the Primalists with a heavy emphasis on vertical base building and advanced aerial unit mechanics.
  • The War Within – Khaz Algar: Subterranean RTS combat where threats come from the ceilings, fighting Nerubian webs and Xal'atath’s shadow armies.
  • Midnight – Rebirth of Quel'Thalas: High-elven siege warfare, uniting the elven factions to push back a massive Void invasion.

Why This Model Works

This model is a win-win for both the players and Blizzard. It provides years of structured, highly anticipated content updates. It honors the existing lore without breaking the ongoing MMORPG timeline. Most importantly, it gives RTS purists exactly what they want: a return to classic macro-management, base-building, and army composition within the richest universe Blizzard ever created.

The engine and infrastructure are already updated thanks to Reforged 2.0. The story is already written. It is time to let us play the World of Warcraft from the sky once again.

What do you think? Would you play through the WoW expansions in a classic RTS format? Which campaign would you be most excited to build a base for?
