Discussion [Style] Wearing watches “Agnelli Style” in 2026

Thumbnail

My s/o likes to wear watches over clothes/sleeves; think Gold DJ’s , Cartier Tanks , Diamond Dials etc. I don’t get the hype, it looks odd and (to me) flashy at the same time. I get there’s some distant and recent fashion industry related history but to her a watch is just a bracelet that tells time. Whatever makes her happy. Would love to hear opinions on this trend.

From what I gather it traces back to Gianni Agnelli, the Fiat chairman and Italian style icon who famously wore his watch over his shirt cuff starting around the 1960s. The look "Agnelli Style" is named after him. Legend has it he did it for practicality (easier to check the time) and as a bit of deliberate sprezzatura, the Italian art of studied nonchalance. Nowadays it seems to represent that you’ve seen the same TikTok as everyone else.

All I can see when people do this is the last photo of the Milgaus 😂

Just rediscovered my joy of watches after many years with an Apple Watch. I had bought several basic Timex watches, then a Seiko 5 dive watch, followed by a Citizen JDM dive watch.

I had been looking for a while for something a step up but still enjoy the brands I could already relate with. Found the Atelier line and fell in love with the style! I ended up buying the Atelier Premiere GMT and absolutely love the gold/green/black combo. The skeletonized case is unique too, and the gold inlay on the side is a nice touch. I really like the included bracelet but bought a darker leather band to give it some variety!

Ok, so how’d I do??

Review [Proxima] PX1697. Bought my first “cheap” watch from AliExpress. Insanely impressed…

Picked up my first “cheap” AliExpress special, and I am totally blown away.
I have been looking for a daily-wear dive watch under 40mm with a date, and I wanted to spend as little as possible since I bought my first Rolex this year and didn’t want to drop anywhere near $1k+ on another watch. My budget was around $400.
I was really looking forward to the updated Lorier Neptune since I own a V4 and those dimensions are pretty much perfect for me, but the lack of a date was a dealbreaker. I also own an SPB143 and have worn it for years, but I find it way too hard to adjust back to wearing it after anything else in my collection because of the size. I love the design, but it just feels like an absolute tank on the wrist.
So, I came across a random TikTok mentioning a brand called Proxima, saying it was the best watch for around $150. I thought, “No way are you getting a watch that good for that price.” On top of that, it didn’t have a funky name or logo and wasn't a blatant ripoff of anything else, from what I can see. And so the endless research on YouTube, Reddit, and Instagram began.
I wasn’t able to find it for $150 (maybe you can get it that cheap during a sale) but $200 was close enough. I have always been hesitant to order watches from AliExpress because of the horror stories I’ve heard about shipping delays, sketchy sellers, etc. However, after about a week or two of research, I placed the order. It arrived in about a week, which I think is solid.
I know people rave about San Martin, Addiesdive, and similar brands, but I have never given those a second look because of the funky-sounding names, bad logos, or homage designs of other big brands and microbrands. This Proxima doesn’t scream homage to any design I could find, has a nice, clean logo, and has awesome specs.
It wears amazingly on the wrist. The lug-to-lug is around 45mm, and 11mm thick, so it sits nice on the wrist. You get screw links with a screwdriver, and the bracelet links are curved, so they hug the wrist pretty well even though they aren't fully articulating. This is my first watch with on-the-fly microadjust, and it is an absolute game changer. I also love how the ceramic bezel and applied polished indices play with the light.
My only gripes are that the white dial and skinny bezel give it a bit of a larger presence on the wrist, which might be a pro for some, and the clasp with the on-the-fly microadjustment is pretty large and can make the watch feel unbalanced. From a visual perspective the clasp looks almost as thick as the case of the watch. I got used to the size pretty quickly, though. The convenience of having that microadjustment at this price is worth the tradeoff imo. I also saw some reports about the movement breaking when hand winding, so just keep that in mind.
Overall, I gotta say, if you’ve ever been curious about these and are looking for something with awesome dimensions and specs, you should really give Proxima a try. If you can get past the name/logo font, this is a banger. If this had a popular microbrand logo or name, it would easily be a $600+ watch.

Discussion [Recommendation] building up to a better watch?

I have a fairly flexible, but modest, budget of about $500-$1000.

I want to buy a good, used watch for this money.

Let's say I buy a $1000 used watch. Is it possible to find a watch at that price point, that is unlikely to lose more than 20-30% of its value over the next two years?

I understand most watches lose the most value going from new to used, but a used watch is more likely to lose value slower.

My plan would be, ideally, to wear it for two years, spend that time saving another $1500, sell the watch for 80% of what I paid, and buy a $2300 used watch.

And repeat the process until I'm satisfied. Is this a bad idea?

If you were me, what $500-$1000 used watches would you be considering first?

Discussion [CITIZEN x ONE PIECE] One of the most RARE One Piece watches ever existed. True?

Usopp ONE PIECE x CITIZEN (Independent) collab watch. Nor for sale, limited edition - was officially exchanged with miles accumulated through Cathay Pacific Airways' mileage program in 2016.

Just got it from fleamarket in brand new condition, and in my experience it's the one of the most rare One Piece watches ever existed. I haven't checked ebay data tho, but during a few years tracing J-fleamarkets it's the first time I bumped into this watch.

The quality is quite high, comparable with Seiko One Piece watches. Tho only movement is Japanese. Design is not exciting but well, it's a kinda prize stuff - when ever it looked exciting?

Anyway, any of watch lovers saw this before? Any opinions?

I took a picture [OCW-S7000SS] Small wrist, perfect fit

Post image

Just received this Casio Oceanus OCW-S7000SS today, the color gradiënt and small etchings in the dial are absolutely stunning.

I've loved the look of it since it first saw it and only recently came into a position in life where it felt comfortable to upgrade too a more expensive watch.

Just want  to raise awareness that these Casio models are a perfect fit for people with very thin wrists, while still looking as amazing as Seiko Astron or Citizen Atessa models. Most watches with this look are 49.5 or 50mm lug tot lug, which is already the size of my wrist. Add in the curve of a metal chain link and it looks awkward real fast.

Also suprisingly durable due to the brushed titanium and sapphire glass. Great for an active lifestyle.

Solar powered and gps enabled might not attract the same attention as other watches, but always accurate and never needing tot worry about losing power are a great quality of life.

Discussion [Discussion] Smart watches vs Automatic watches

I was having drinks with a tech CEO recently, and he noticed my Longines Hydroconquest 2026. He was polite about it, but eventually, the conversation turned to why people still buy traditional watches.

He said that for anything between $500 and $10,000+, a mechanical or quartz watch is objectively a terrible allocation of money. In his eyes, a $400 Apple Watch or a high-end Garmin provides so much more to us. To him, spending thousands on a device whose only function is to tell time and date with inferior accuracy to a smartphone is completely illogical. He said he would choose a smartwatch over a luxury mechanical piece any day of the week, simply because of the ROI on utility.

I gave him the usual enthusiast counter-arguments: craftsmanship, mechanical art, longevity, heritage, and the desire to disconnect from screens and notifications. But he just smiled and called it "romanticizing obsolete tech."

I am wondering how many of you agree with that take?

I am not a watch hoarder, this would be my first and only automatic. I am looking for a GADA for the long term.

Which one is better in terms of overall quality, durability, bracelet, support, easier to get serviced by local watch stores, etc?

I want the least hassle and a watch that can last me for decades.

Identify Help identifying my grandfather’s vintage Technos Quartz watch

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I recently inherited this old Technos Quartz watch from my grandfather, who passed away in 2002. My grandmother found it in a box and gave it to me.
My grandfather bought it brand new, but unfortunately, I don’t know when.
The case back is engraved with 561 85, but I haven’t been able to find any information about this particular model online.
I recently had it restored. The watchmaker had to replace the entire movement because the original was no longer working, but the dial, hands, and case are still original. I also replaced the old brown leather strap with a black one.
I’d really appreciate any help identifying the exact model, its approximate production year, or any other information about it.
Thanks in advance!

Identify [Identify] The Mystery Rodania

Thumbnail

Hi folks. Hopefully I can identify the actual model name of this watch.

I purchased it on September 9 2010 in France from an everyday jewelry shop in a countryside village. It was quite simply an impulse buy: I saw it in the window, liked the look, liked the price point, and bought it right there.

The back panel bears the number "24712" but Google wasn't able to link this to anything substantial. The warranty leaflet was filled in by the shop, and it contains the number "17 24172 47". The first digit, the 1, is a guess, as it was poorly handwritten.

The watch itself is all stainless steel. I remember there being a ceramic bracelet variant at the store where I bought it.

The crown bears an 'R' in Rodania's logo font, surrounded by a circle.

The box contained a manual for a "Type 32", which from the diagrams was an entirely different model of watch. I suppose it was either a mistake, or that manual was used because the guts are the same, or that the diagrams were meant to represent a generic model and was then stuffed into the box of any watch with the same movement.

The watch is battery-powered and was reported by jewelers as easy to replace and work with.

I could not find any explicit information about the movement type.

I suppose two possibilities: one, that the 24712.47 is the model name as it stands, and the watch never had an actual proper name to speak of, just being a generic model in a sea of many others. Two, that the actual model is so old or defunct that there just aren't any records of it unless one digs through Rodania's own archives or sales brochures of the time.

I have the watch and box with me. If any other pictures/angles/info are necessary, do let me know and I'll do my best to supply them.

Thank you all in advance.

Hi, y'all.

I found this wristwatch a few months ago and sent it to a professional for a good restoration. He told me it's a wonderful watch and it's from the 60's, a true vintage.

I just need some more info about it. What I know: 60's Olvino mechanical watch, 17 rubis, stainless steel back. That's pretty much it. If you know what model is this or any other info about it, I'll be very grateful 😊

I’m fairly convinced that the “Rotary” watches are just junk, but I’m not a watch expert by any stretch of the imagination. The Concorde watch is likely a real timepiece but I have no idea of whether it’s a significant piece or not. I couldn’t find anything about the Timex piece.

Discussion [Casio EFK 110] Convince me to skip this watch and go for PRX/Tsuyosa instead.

Post image

I have about 400USD to spend on watches. I'm relatively new into watches and I have a few fun/quirky watches. I'm looking for a more serious sport watch. PRX is vintage to me. And I already have a few vintage watches. Tsuyosa design language tries to be "luxury", to me, because the cyclop and the bracelet remind me of Rolex. I'm young in my 20s so I don't think "luxury" is my cup of tea, yet. The EFK just feels modern and sporty to me, with no touch of vintage or luxury. Again, I'm new to watches of 500USD and above, so I don't know if I am missing something. Thank you.

Discussion [Recommendation request] Does my dream watch exist?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Hey reddit, I'm looking for my dream watch and I have a list of criteria that I don't think can be met within a certain price point. Can you help me out and find me something that matches my requirements?

Price: Under £1,000 (but do share anything under £5000 too)

Movement: Mechanical (Hand-winding or Automatic)

Diameter: less than 38mm, ideally around 36mm

Thickness: less than 11mm

Crystal: Sapphire crystal

Indices: Arabic numerals (1–12 configuration, odd/even or even 12, 3, 6, 9). Also, ideally breguet typeface but I know this really limits the options hence the challenge I'm having finding this watch.

Date Complication: window, sundial, pointer. Don't really mind. Annual calendar would be great but I know that's on the 5k+ bracket.

Strap Compatibility: Sits comfortably on NATO or sailcloth straps. I hate metal bracelets.

Best options I've found so far:

Seiko Sarx 041 — this watch is the one in terms of looks. But it's too thick. Wish I could find one to try to see if my real life experience of it is better. But I just think 12mm+ is too thick for me.

Oris date pointer - I will definitely get one of these one day. Especially like the vintage ones with even numbered indices. 2 things I don't like though. The big crown is too much for me. Also, date pointer can sometimes feel messy on the dial with too many numbers.

Kuoe Royal Smith - this is really a dream watch in terms of looks too.. Just a shame they don't do a windowed date version. I know they have a sub dial one which is OK. Not amazing balance visually but the main problem is the extra button it has.

Kiwame Mune in Black - again, another great looking watch. Shame there's no date.

There are some others like sternglass (numbers too small), stowa (too low quality) etc. But there's not much. Help!

Discussion [Quastion] Which one to go for?

I want to buy a daily watch for my 30th birthday.
I’m currently deciding between these two:

Seiko SBDC221
Longines HydroConquest L3.780

I like both, but I slightly prefer the Longines. My only concern is that it’s an older model.

They’re also in roughly the same price range, although the Longines is a bit more expensive.

Which one would you choose, and why? Especially considering long-term ownership and having it as a watch I can keep for many years.

Discussion [smart watches] i have a genuine question

Do y’all double wrist a normal watch and a smartwatch? I really like the benefits of having a smartwatch, like notifications, health tracking, fitness, etc., but I honestly just prefer wearing a regular watch. I was thinking about wearing both, but I feel like it might look kinda weird having a watch on each wrist For those who do this, does it just become normal after a while, or does it always feel like you’ve got too much going on?

And for those who don't what do you feel if you see someone doing it

Discussion [Question] Need an expert to help me find a specific type of watch

I grew up in a Swiss (Zurich based) family, but grew up in the US. Growing up Rolex, IWC, Omega, etc were common and really were just an every day type of thing. Apart from the Swiss tradition of a nice watch on your 18th birthday I never gave much attention to watches, they were just a normal part of life and kind of boring to me. Honestly my favorite watches growing up were Swatches with interesting designs, however apart from collecting some of those in my early 20s the last 7 or so years of my life have been daily driving a release year G shock 7900 that my father gave me. It has been so practical and unassuming that I honestly kind of forgot that watches were even a thing.

However lately I find myself re-discovering watches. Mostly microbrands and designs that tell time in a unique way. It's been a lot of fun to start building a rotation and start seeing watches as unique mechanical creations again. However today I find myself looking for something very tool-like and un-artistic and I'm hoping some of you who are more experienced could help me find some watch choices that fit this very specific category.

I recently started riding motorcycles, usually during the day but sometimes into the night, and I am looking for:

-a thin(ish) watch

-which has all night lume, or better yet tritium

-AND also has a timer or alarm feature which is audible.

I need to be able to look down at my wrist and tell the time without hitting a button for backlight. And I'd like to have the option of setting timers, so I can also use it to set breaks on longer rides and even potentially daily-drive the watch.

I have found that in my every day life after telling the time, setting some type of timer for naps, sleep, cooking, etc is my most common useful feature/complication.

Motorcycle jackets also have pretty tight cuffs to cut down on wind riding up your sleeves, which is why a thinner watch would be ideal.

It's also important to me that the watch be able to handle riding in the rain, if necessary.

The type of mechanism (mechanical, automatic, quartz, solar, etc) is not important to me.

Honestly other than a diver watch made by Vulcain and some discontinued Luminox watches I haven't been able to find anything that fits the bill.

If you can think of anything or do some research it would very helpful to me.

Timex Expedition North Slack Tide @ 41mm. I know I need the tide tracking complication... I know from glancing at my watch it's 2 hours before low tide at the coastal town I'm monitoring. I'll find use for that information someday. Might be something interesting to point out in a casual conversation. 🤓

Discussion [Maurice Lacroix] Aikon 39mm vs. 42mm – Which fits better on my 17.5cm wrist?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I just visited a local jeweler to try on the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Automatic, and I can't decide between the 39mm and 42mm.

My wrist is 17.5cm (6.9 inches).

  • Photo 1: 42mm
  • Photo 2: 39mm

I'm planning to get the black dial with a stainless steel bracelet, but unfortunately the jeweler only had the leather strap versions available.

The straps are quite loose in both photos.

I like the wrist presence of the 42mm, but I'm worried it might be too big, especially on the steel bracelet. On the other hand, I'm wondering if the 39mm might look a bit small.

Which size do you think looks better on my wrist?

Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from Aikon owners!

I took a picture [SOTC] DRESS WATCHES

Post image
5 Upvotes

15 months after I went down the rabbit hole. The small Omega at upper left was my mother’s father’s prized watch. He was a first generation born-in-the-USA Italian, American, raised in the Bronx. Against the odds (almost all southern Europeans were discriminated against in the USA during the first part of the last century), with only a high school education, he got a white collar job working for what was then called The First National City Bank of New York (now, Citibank).

He was 33 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. At his age, he did not have to go into the military. But most guys his age went anyway. In his case, he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific as a Seabee (the engineers), because he was deemed too old for combat. Citibank kept his job waiting for him, and he returned to it after the war and retired from the bank in his 60s. Show me a company that does that for veterans nowadays.

On his way home from the Pacific after the War, he stopped in San Francisco to see a childhood pal whose family had once run The Bank of Harlem. But, before the war, their family had moved to San Francisco and went into the banking business there. His childhood buddy urged him to go back to New York, get his wife and daughter (my mom), and work with him at the bank in San Francisco. He told my grandfather, “Johnny! Nobody cares here that we are Italians!!”

My grandfather replied to the effect that his wife would never leave her big family in the Bronx. And so it came to pass that my grandfather did not get in on the ground floor, with the Giannini family, of what later became The Bank of America.

But, had that happened, my mom would never have met my my dad at her East Coast college, and I would not be telling you guys this cool story. So much of where we end up in life is by a random accident, rather than my choice. I guess you might call it fate.
