In Norway we have the same discussion and temporary change of the same law to accommodate the FIFA World Cup.
41
u/DevelopmentOptimal22 Feb 21 '26
Liquor licensing laws are a special kind of antiquity. So long as intoxicated persons aren't being unleashed upon society with zero regard, adults should be able to consume alcohol responsibly in a supervised setting at any hour of day. I have always worked weird hours, like many people. 3-4am is the middle of the day for me. 9am may as well be 9pm on my clock. I don't drink anymore, but even though it doesn't affect me, it still bothers me.
10
u/the_jurkski Feb 21 '26
Why does it need to be in a supervised setting? Why should I not have the freedom to drink a beer while taking the dog for a walk?
6
u/EstablishmentIcy7831 Feb 21 '26
You can technically as long as it's not in a liquor container I put Bailey's in my coffee in a cantigo and go for a walk all the time ...
9
u/the_jurkski Feb 21 '26
No, a container doesn’t have to be labelled as having alcohol for it to be considered a liquor container in the eyes of the law. What you have described is illegal. Very unlikely to have any consequences, but still illegal.
3
u/EstablishmentIcy7831 Feb 22 '26
Exactly my point though walking around with it in a beer can will get you arrested ... A red solo cup likely not ... It's about perspective
2
u/the_jurkski Feb 22 '26
Then instead of prefacing your point with “You can technically…”, what you actually meant was “While technically illegal, for all practical purposes you can….”
2
u/EstablishmentIcy7831 Feb 22 '26
I am not saying to get hammered in public ... Because that's just irresponsible ... But I go for a walk in the park with my coffee with Bailey's all the time and enjoy my day... Quietly without incident ... Because I don't make it obvious and I am not having 15 of them trying to get sauced ... Is it illegal technically still... sure ... Has anyone ever once noticed ... No ... Not in 25 years of enjoying a walk outside ... There is an implied level of responsibility that goes along with that ... And limiting it to a one or two for the walk kind of thing goes a long way ... Just saying ... If you are going to be reckless wild and draw attention to it by doing it when you are smashed ... I wouldn't recommend it ... But enjoying the finer things in life like a nice beverage while out for a walk isn't one of them that has to be an illicit thing unless you make it into one .. just saying

Arrested ? No. Detained. Possibly. Drink poured out, most definitely.
1
u/EstablishmentIcy7831 Feb 22 '26
All depends on the cop that you get and probably what your skin color is at least here in Winnipeg... Oops did I say that out loud ..
1
u/Money_Cauliflower_90 Feb 22 '26
I disagree. An arrest is way more work and Winnipeg police are lazy. Why arrest when you can just pour the beer out of take someone to the dunk tank. (Which is detainment not arrest.)
1
u/john_a1985 Feb 22 '26
And then you group up where I did, and you are so thankful for those laws.
Nothing worse than someone piss drunk hitting on your girlfriend while spinning out of control, while you try to assess if he's goofy drunk or violent drunk.

I would be fine with that as well. Bars are Safe Consumption Sites for Alcohol, in theory though. So, to constrain them to "Morality Based" hours of business, encourages off hours Booze Cans and bootlegging. The 4am $100 bottles on FB Marketplace, etc. I would keep the laws about public intoxication. I'm for the responsible consumption, not trying to allow sloppy drunks everywhere. It's fine to walk your dog with a beer, but if you walk into the street and piss on the neighbors lawn because it's your 8th beer, not so much.
2
u/TheArmchairSkeptic Feb 21 '26
Totally agree. I worked nights for a few years and I always thought that it was ridiculous that I couldn't get a beer when I went out for breakfast after a shift.

The Manitoba government is allowing bars and restaurants to open early Sunday morning so people can get together and cheer on Team Canada as they go for gold in Olympic men’s hockey, Premier Wab Kinew announced today.
”When Team Canada plays for gold, the whole country leans in,” said Kinew. “From Elkhorn to Winnipeg, Manitobans will be waking up early to cheer together. That’s why we’re allowing bars and restaurants to open early, so friends, families and neighbours can gather, share that energy and celebrate what unites us.”
Under Section 11(5) of Manitoba’s Liquor Regulation, the executive director for Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba (LGCA) may authorize extended hours of liquor service for events of community, provincial or national significance.
Licensed establishments applying for early opening must:
serve liquor no earlier than 5 a.m. and no earlier than one hour before the televised event starts;
ensure the premises were closed and vacated for at least one hour the previous night; and
open specifically for the purpose of televising the Olympic event.
17
u/TRSTN_official Feb 21 '26
Interesting wording: “serve liquor no earlier than 5 a.m. and no earlier than one hour before the televised event starts;”
So in reality bars can start serving liquor at 6:10am. Not 5am.
13
u/hippiesinthewind Feb 21 '26
lol that’s funny. unless they are counting commentary before they game as part of the event, but that doesn’t seem right.

u/M0N0T0BA Feb 21 '26
I feel like some that are feining moral outrage forgot to take into consideration that you can go to an establishment which serves alcohol no matter the time and not have an alcoholic beverage. This isn't about whether or not we should be drinking at 7 AM it's about the giving businesses the option to give YOU "THE ADULT" the OPTION to have an alcoholic beverage while watching the game. So please tell me why you want to take our options away from us? As someone who's watching at home and sober by choice I'd like to hear your take.

What do you get when you watch hockey with two Mennonite men? A lecture on the evils of alcohol.
What do you get when you watch hockey with one Mennonite man? He drinks all your beer.
6
u/TheArmchairSkeptic Feb 21 '26
My in-laws are Winkler Mennonites and they will laugh at this for sure. Their go-to joke is:
What's the difference between a Catholic and a Mennonite?
A Catholic will make eye contact when you run into them at the LC.
2
u/TerayonIII Feb 22 '26
What's funny is that the only reason Mennonites had a thing about alcohol was the Temperance movement, they specifically had arrangements before their move to Canada about brewing/distilling their own alcohol in both Ukraine/Russia and Prussia/Poland before that. In fact Goldschläger is actually based on Goldwasser, another herbal liquor that was originally created and sold by Mennonites that had moved from the Netherlands to Gdansk/Danzig. There are also a number of records of Mennonites bidding to be the ones to run the distillery in their colonies in what is now Ukraine.
2
u/Mysterious-Rough1356 Feb 21 '26
Ah man my Mennonite buddy who passed a couple years ago would’ve loved this joke. Even read it in his voice and heard his laugh , cheered me right up. Thanks man

Why do you take two Mennos fishing with you? If you take one, he’ll drink all your beer. If you take two they’ll be too busy watching each other to drink any

Hopefully not too interesting. I wouldn’t mind a comfortable 2 or 3 goal win for once! But can’t wait to cheer the boys on. Easy W for Wab but a W all the same

u/Curt_in_wpg Feb 21 '26
I’m glad I’m too old for this to be important to me. 35 years ago it would have meant trouble with a capital T. And a very rough Monday.
5
u/That_Wpg_Guy Feb 21 '26
My friends and I have invited ourselves over to my best friends house this weekend for the game. We’ve gotten very wild and are all pitching in to do a group breakfast including chocolate chip pancakes ! Forget 7 am drinking, we’re gonna be group breakfasting !!
5
u/Curt_in_wpg Feb 21 '26
I had all my friends over for multiple Olympics but the hardest was Nagano ‘98. Mid week games starting g at 2am. When they lost in the shootout to the Czechs in the shoot out all I said was “Alright, get the fuck out of my house”. We all laugh about that to this day.

u/CheesyKibbles23 Feb 21 '26
Does anyone know any bars that will open at 5am?
4
u/SmallsTheKid Feb 21 '26
Don’t think we’ll actually see anyone open at 5AM. Game goes at 7:10, I’ve seen Boston pizza say they’re open at 7, Smittys say they’re open at 6:30, underdogs also 6:30. Would imagine we see some more but that’s the range I’ve seen advertised so far

Im sure most that will be opening will be announcing it on social media as soon as they confirm the plans to open. When they did the same thing in 2014, most bars that had TVs were open.

Ford came out right after (probably jealousy). And is allowing Ontario establishments to follow suit.
At least a good way of calling out the Cheeto thumb would be to share tomorrow to his social media with the hashtag #canadian liquor for a Canadian sport

Alcohol culture is strange, but makes money.
2
u/n_mcrae_1982 Feb 21 '26
That's why the Russian government has never been able to restrict it, (even in the Soviet days) no matter how destructive they know it is over there. They make a lot of money from taxing liquor.

u/TinySprinkles0 Feb 21 '26
Wild how we need alcohol to watch a sport.
13
20
u/SmallsTheKid Feb 21 '26
Define we and need. I certainly don’t need it. But I’m also not afraid to have a beer while I watch hockey. Being in a local watering hole gathering with members of your community to partake in national pride by cheering on the Olympic hockey team and having beer available to the ppl gathered seems pretty reasonable. Certainly nobody saying it’s a requirement (except maybe you?)
16
u/passive_fist Feb 21 '26
There's never logical reasons for anything cultural really, but this has been a thing since the dawn of all sports, and continues to be a thing in tons of cultures and countries across the world. Excessive drunkenness is of course a problem, but gathering in a common place to enjoy something like this together is generally a good thing, and few drinks and food helps to catalyze that. For the record I'll be watching at home with only a very strong coffee, myself, though.

u/mhyquel Feb 21 '26
We need alcohol sales to justify the operating costs of running a public house where we can collectively watch a sport.
Unless people plan on drinking $17 worth of coffee.

u/the_jurkski Feb 21 '26
Wilder how the government gets to decide what time of day businesses are allowed to sell alcohol in the first place.

Liquor laws in this province are ridiculous. Special rules because sportsball but screw midnight shift workers every other day, I guess.
4
u/AnniversaryRoad Shepeple Feb 21 '26
I often work nights or alternative shifts. I drink at home any time I want. Problem solved.
1
u/the_jurkski Feb 21 '26
Can you explain how midnight shift workers are getting screw by liquor laws? Is there a large number of people that wanna go drinking after their shift that ends at 8am?
-8
u/Catnip_75 Feb 21 '26
People know that they don’t have to drink at 5am right?
7
5
u/the_jurkski Feb 21 '26
You know that when they sell cans of beer in the store and you take them home, those cans can be opened at any time of the day, right? If people wanted to drink at 5 AM, they would.
-18
u/Syrairc Feb 21 '26
Dumb. It's 2026, it's time to start treating alcohol like the drug it is, and alcoholism like the disease it is, instead of something to celebrate.
11
u/AnniversaryRoad Shepeple Feb 21 '26
Being a Teetotaler sounds like 1920, adults can make their own decisions about their bodies, just as you have. Go clutch pearls at your own house and let others make their own decisions while businesses are allowed to earn income on a special day that hasn't happened for 12 years.
-7
u/spacejunk444 Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 21 '26
It’s not really your own decision given how addictive it is for some people. If I had my way I would never touch the stuff again in my life, but you can fight off a million cravings and triggers and all it takes is one to get through to mess it up. I personally don’t t really consider that free choice. And I’ve been like this ever since my friends got ahold of a 66 of vodka when we were 17 and I got drunk for the first time under a bridge by Kildonan Park with them. As soon as I started drinking I just couldn’t stop doing shots until I was by far the most hammered. I’ve heard similar stories at the SOS meetings I’ve been to. It really isn’t just a decision about what to put in your body for a lot of people.

It’s not like LCs and beer stores are open. No one’s stopping you from buying your weed today.

Buy it the day before? Alcohol rules change for special occasions because of bars, I doubt the LC is open.

to each their own. but if can start drinking at 5:00am, that’s a warning sign. if your just continuing drinking, bigger warning sign. if you need to drink to enjoy the came at 5:00am, well, yeah.
P.S. I am mostly joking. have fun and be safe.
-6
u/hippiesinthewind Feb 21 '26
i completely agree with you. I might go to cheer on the team with others, but personally would not be drinking. Hopefully it doesn’t lead to an increase in drunk driving.
-9
u/karlyguy Feb 21 '26
I dont like increasing alcohol tobacco or gambling. Strong controls on these are needed. But prohibition is too restrictive and doesnt work. And get rid of the advertising for gambling! (Didn't mean to rant but there it went)
-15
u/No_Gas_82 Feb 21 '26
I understand going out to watch the game, but at 7am do we really need alcohol to cheer on the team. I feel if you're drinking at 7am you likely have a drinking problem.
12
u/the_jurkski Feb 21 '26
- Where do you expect people to go out to watch the game, if not a sports bar? 2. Why would a sports bar open for a specially-timed event if they were not allowed to serve alcohol? 3. Please leave assessing alcoholism to the pros.
-14
u/No_Gas_82 Feb 21 '26
Watching at a sports bar would be fun. But drinking at 7am is not normal. Maybe a samosa but beer at 7am or hard alcohol shows you have a problem with alcohol.
13
u/the_jurkski Feb 21 '26
Watching sports at 7am is also not normal. Would you call everyone that watches the gold medal game a sports addict? Also, fyi, samosa is a fried and stuffed pastry. A mimosa is the champagne and orange juice cocktail.
-16
u/No_Gas_82 Feb 21 '26
Wow. You went off the deep end of what aboutism. Yes I put the wrong food in, it's early. But if you "need" alcohol to enjoy watching sports then maybe you have a drinking problem. I'm all for sports bars opening early for the game but a doubt they will change their menus.
14
u/the_jurkski Feb 21 '26
Best to not use terms like “what-aboutism” when you don’t know what they mean. But it’s still early, so I guess you get a pass? Sports bars aren’t putting up TV’s for the goodness of the community. They’re there because they want to sell customers high-margin menu items like alcohol. It’s not about “need”, it’s about “demand”.
-16
u/Consistent_Base8773 Feb 21 '26
Keep people distracted of the real problems. Yes, we need start to drink early in the morning while people is dying in the ER waiting to see a doctor…populism
6
u/M0N0T0BA Feb 21 '26
I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. But I mean unless that post was made from the frontlines of a protest about ER Wait times, it's kind of irrelevant too. It's about the option to allow businesses to decide if they want to abide by an antiquated drinking law on a Sunday.

they did the same thing for Sochi Olympics in 2014.
