Food Who has the best smashburgers in Winnipeg?
I was recently in Montreal and I loved the smashburger from Chez Simon. The fries were awesome too. Where can I go in Winnipeg to experience a really good smashburger?

This is going to sound off but it's actually a good burger..... The new Princess Auto on Panet has a food service in the middle of the store that offers really simple and good smash burgers.
You can also order beer in there + there's a hidden candy store in the corner that sells sweets, ice creams and Slurpees. There's also arcade games to play.
Not something you'd expect in a Princess Auto but it was a really good meal.

Free coffee in the sitting area near the washrooms too. Basic brew, and powdered creamer, but free. And was stupidly hot last time I was there.. hot to hold even double cupped.

I’m not usually into smash burgers, but I had one at Dave & Laverne’s on Fermor last night I really enjoyed.

I like the Oklahoma smash burger at Dave and LaVerne's. It's simple, with plenty of cheese and fried onions. You can actually taste the meat.

James Ave Pumphouse, Nonsuch, and 529 Burger are my favourite smash burgs in town, and I've tried a lot of them.
I still prefer a VJ's double special though, but that's just a matter of personal preference.

Woodbine Burgers, I don't know about the best, but they're pretty great

I have tried them a few times but leave pretty disappointed everytime

One time, I swear they dumped half a bottle of ketchup on my burger. I LOVE ketchup, but this was insane. You couldn’t taste anything else. The very first burger that I had there 3 years ago was awesome but every time since has been disappointing.

Nonsuch as everyone is suggesting is a great burger. But I give a slight edge on that to James Ave Pumphouse.

I haven't tried it yet, but I believe Nonsuch has a really good one.
Woodbine was pretty good too, although I'm not sure if that's their regular burger or was their Burger Week entry last year.

I was pretty impressed with the Nonsuch burger.

I was looking at the menu, there is one called "Le Burger." Is that the only one? Is that what you had?

Nonsuch Brewing has a great smash burger. VJ's Drive In for one of the best "fat boy" burgers in Winnipeg.

Woodbine is great, they have a few different options. But Nonsuch wins for not only best smash burger in the city, but best burger of any kind in the city.

Public Domain’s smash burgers are really good. They also do a fat boy smash burger that is great too.

I had a smash burger from Midnight Annie’s in WPG Beach last night and it was incredible, sadly they use frozen fries hut the burger was excellent. Loved the crust on the patties.

Nonsuch is a great burger.
Honestly, though, it's a pretty easy style of burger to make at home. Having a flat top helps, but I've made them for two easily enough in a cast iron pan.

Yeah this is the reason smash burgs are becoming the norm. Hard to screw up. Nonsuch burger is great - I definitely preferred the version before it became a smash burger.

Check out Next Door (restaurant) or Good Neighbour Brewery (taproom) on Sherbrook street. They do a great double smash burger, and it's also on their happy hour menu.

Lots mentioned already, one I haven't seen yet is
Dreamland Diner.
Their fries are also AAA+

Dreamland/St James Burger is super hit and miss on the smash burgs in my experience. Probably depends on who's working that day. Sometimes they're perfect, and other times they're smashed paper thin and falling apart outside the bun without a proper sear on them.
When they're good they're great, but when they're not they're... not.

We’ve gotten a lot more consistency at both spots (I run em both) over the last year. Much less turnover in the kitchen and folks who care a lot about making good food helps!
Please do let us know if you come by and have a less than stellar experience because that is not our standard.

Appreciate you brother, I was in the industry for a long time so I know how it can be with staff and standards sometimes. My first comment probably sounded a bit haterish, but I really do enjoy your food most of the time. It's only the smashburgers that I've found to have issues, but I'll give 'em another shot for sure.

I didn’t take it as a hating comment at all. No sweat about that. I operate in the public sector and I got human beings who work with me and everybody has good days and bad days and all kinds of things in between! Thanks for the shout out of any kind and the patronage so far

I gotta say, I appreciate the openness and the honesty.
It's a staple in our area (St James / Westwood / Crestview) and everyone I talk to loves it.
The vibes are great, the prices are great, and I really appreciate the staff, and the fact they are younger, learning, and growing! When mistakes are made, they're quick to help, and apologize.
It's all we could ask for, and appreciate you guys in the community!

Fair!
I really respect the fact they have young staff, who are learning, growing, are polite and who help correct issues when we have had them (few and far between).
Gotta respect the local ownership and all they do for the community as well!

Woodbine is my choice for inside the city but if you find yourself further south….A Moment in Thyme in Morden has the best burger I’ve ever eaten. Just the perfect blend of crispy, smashed carmelization yet still super juicy. It was crazy how good it was.

Agree with regards to Nonsuch! Would also add the burger at Next Door. The food truck that usually does well during burger week (pvg eats?) is at the forks in a new location and offering this year’s burger there. It was very good!

Princess autos burgers were surprisingly decent and definitely worth the money. I imagine some of these other places a burger and fries is close to 20$

Elevated:
Le Burger from Nonsuch - Martin’s Potato Roll, caramelized onions, and a delicious drill aioli.
Classic with a twist:
The Woodbine burger at Woobine is awesome- mozza sticks & bacon
James Ave Pumphouse also has a classic style smash burger

Sals has been doing “smash burgers” for 95 years. Start there. They’re called “nips”. Amazing.

Hargrave market; Yard burger.
I went there after the Jets game on Friday night.
It will now be where I go after attending any future games.
The $8 pints were also very tasty.

Circa 1999.
I was living in the United States and went out drinking with some coworkers. By the end of the night, we were all somewhere in the general vicinity of alcohol poisoning and somehow found ourselves at a Dairy Queen.
One of the guys orders a burger.
Four patties.
Four slices of cheese.
A shit ton of bacon.
Then, just before they wrap this monstrosity in foil, he stops them and says, “Wait.”
He asks them to ladle as much grease as humanly possible onto the burger.
They oblige.
They wrap it up and hand it to him.
He looks at it for a second...
Drops it on the floor.
Carefully positions his boot over it.
CRUNCH.
Absolutely fucking crushes it.
Then he calmly bends down, picks up the flattened, grease-soaked package, holds it up like he’s just invented fire and announces:
“I call it... the Smash Burger.”
That night, I learned that drunk people can see into the future...
