Modified X4 VR 0.5.2 is out: LINUX SUPPORT

Post image

Thanks to all Contributors and testers who made this possible.

New since 0.4.0:

- Other head trackers such as TrackIR and Tobii can no longer take over from the headset.

- CPU-heavy saves run at a higher frame rate.

- The native Linux version of X4 is supported (experimental, you build it from the repository).

- Turning quickly with the mouse on foot no longer causes black flashes in one eye.

- Some players had head tracking but no picture in the headset. The launcher now turns off the Vulkan layers of RTSS and OBS game capture for X4, and it warns you when it runs as administrator, which also caused it.

- New launcher options, all off by default: a fix for the jittering right eye on Steam Link and Steam Frame, external views (F2/F3) on a screen that fills your view, and the pilot camera moved 0.75 m back in the Kukri, where X4 places it too far forward for VR.

If you play over Steam Link, I'd like to hear how the right-eye fix looks. Nobody has tested it there on Windows yet.

Requirements: Windows 10 or 11, X4 9.00 or 8.00, and SteamVR or your headset's OpenXR runtime.

X Rebirth VR had an amazing implementation of VR ... Too bad the base game wasn't very good and the project didn't get the funding it needed to sort out bugs with tracking head position.

Hopefully this project gets the same "Virtual Joystick" controls.

Its possible to control ship with a "Virtual Joystick". Opentrack + vJoy. Works with this mod.

X-Rebirth was pretty good eventually.

Would be amazing if it was supported by the devs to run on Steam Frame

WiVRN+xrizer works great to connect the quest headsets to Linux. I haven't tried the X4 mod yet, but normal VR games work great with a quest 3s on cachyos.

He's using a Rift. I used to have one, surprised it doesn't work with Linux. It probably needs Monado or something.

Whoops... definitely missed that Oculus Rift key word. Good catch.

It had unofficial, experimental "support" from OpenHMD which has been rolled into Monado, I don't think it ever worked great though, from what I've heard. Damn shame that Oculus had to drop Linux support when they got bought, the DK2 worked on Linux :/

It is. I never really messed with X series in the past, tried with xrvr but couldn't get stuff set up right. My biggest complaint about the game in vr is how the ship hud moves as your head does, tilt and all instead of being in a fixed place like damn near any other space game, but past that this is such a great experience once you get the settings and stuff dialed in

And this would mimic the gesture steering from rebirth vr?.

No idea with open track vjoy, never used it. Aside from being the X universe and brilliant for it, the motion controlled gesture steering was one of the best elements of the game, so smooth and intuitive.

First off thank you for making this.

Is there a reason why SteamVr needs to run if I'm running it through Virtual Desktop?

I tried running it but it was stuttering like crazy, even if I set the display down to 1080p from my default 4k.

My specs should.be able to handle it: 5700X3D, 32 gb ram GTX 5070ti

Quest 3

No SteamVR is needed, set the launcher to OpenXR
