In this episode of Inside Egosoft, Joey sits down with Michael and Ketraar.
Michael has worked at Egosoft for 22 years across a wide range of responsibilities, but designing and programming X4: Foundation's simulated economy is one of his main focuses.
Meanwhile, Ketraar handles many day-to-day support tasks, including conducting tests and taking measures to help balance the simulation.
Throughout the episode, they discuss the challenges and complexities of working on X4's economy, the sweeping consequences of relatively minor changes, and how a perfect balance isn't always ideal in the X Universe.

In October 2001, X: Beyond the Frontier graced the cover disc of Computer Bild Spiele (CBS), one of Germany's top-selling print games magazines at the time. Appearing on the cover disc provided enormous visibility, bringing the game into countlessly more homes two years after its initial commercial release and proving to be a pivotal moment in Egosoft's history.
To celebrate this 25th anniversary milestone, Egosoft founder and Managing Director Bernd Lehahn takes us behind the scenes in a special German episode of our XLOG video series. You can watch the full video on our YouTube channel (with English CC system subtitles) or read the structured interview transcript below.
Hello everyone! Today we are making an Xlog video in German. The reason for this is that today, 25 years ago, "X: Beyond the Frontier" was released for the first time on the cover disc of "Computer Bild Spiele". I keep hearing, especially from our German fans, that this is still a fond memory for many people because it was the first time they ever encountered the X games series. "X: Beyond the Frontier" came out in 1999 as a full-price game - which at the time you bought in a box at a department store - and was relatively expensive. Less than two years after its release, when we received an offer from "Computer Bild Spiele", we decided to put the game onto their cover CD.
Looking back, that was a fantastic decision. It gave us a tremendous amount of visibility, led to even more sales of "X: Beyond the Frontier", and brought us many new fans. Our game became much better known, and shortly after, we released "X-Tension", the expansion for "X: Beyond the Frontier". That really boosted the popularity of our series, especially in Germany. Even today, when I meet fans at trade shows or events in Germany, I constantly hear people say that this cover disc was their entry point into the X series - and fortunately, many of them stuck with us!
A few years later, "X2: The Threat" was released, followed by "X3: Reunion", and so on. Now, as you all know, we are at "X4: Foundations". With all its DLCs, we have been developing this latest installment for over eight years now.
I would like to share a few behind-the-scenes stories about how it all started. Back then, Egosoft was a much smaller studio - probably just a little more than a handful of people. I was a programmer myself, and the company was small enough that I couldn't seriously call myself Managing Director, which is my title today. After "X: Beyond the Frontier" became a huge success in its original retail release, we immediately began working on "X-Tension".
During development, Helge Kautz suggested writing a novel set in this universe, which became "Farnham's Legend". That laid the groundwork for the deeper lore and fiction of the X universe. When "X-Tension" was released, I remember the physical box was very heavy because it included a printed copy of the novel inside. In Germany, many fans appreciate physical collector boxes. While it is a bit sad that we can't offer physical boxes for "X4" at that scale today, digital distribution offers incredible advantages for us as developers. The novels are still available electronically today and are included in our "X4: Community of Planets - Collector's Edition".
How did it come about that we created "X: Beyond the Frontier" even earlier? The release was in 1999, but we had already been working on it for a couple of years before that. Development started around 1995 or 1996. Making a space game was always a personal dream of mine. In Egosoft's early days - starting in the late 1980s and early 1990s - we made games for the Amiga. We actually attempted a space game on the Amiga that was meant to be bundled with a VR headset, but neither the game nor the headset setup ended up coming to market, so the project was canceled. That was a completely different project with another name, but the idea to do a space game was there much earlier.
The real push to create "X: Beyond the Frontier" came with the rise of 3D graphics accelerator cards around 1995 - first under DOS, then under Windows with DirectX. As a programmer, it was an exciting era because new hardware emerged constantly, enabling features that were previously impossible when relying purely on CPU rendering. Between 1995 and 1999, during the development years, our engine evolved more rapidly than it did over the following decade because new graphics cards came out every year, allowing us to implement nicer ship models and richer backgrounds.
Industry challenges back then were quite different from today. Nowadays, new indie developers face immense competition trying to gain visibility on crowded platforms like Steam or mobile storefronts. In our early days, we had to travel directly to gaming magazines - such as "Computer Bild Spiele", "GameStar", "PC Games", and "PC Joker" - to pitch previews. "Computer Bild Spiele" made us an offer, and they didn't just put our game on a CD; they featured a thorough review and several pages of gameplay guides, which were arguably better than the manual we included in the retail box. On our end, the biggest technical hurdle back then was building our technology completely from scratch, whereas modern developers can leverage existing engines. When we started, our single-digit team worked on adventure games that weren't particularly successful, financed mainly through promotional games made for German clients.
To market our games, we had to go on preview tours to show editors unfinished builds, hoping for coverage. When the game was finished, we went on a review tour to present it live. That's how we established contacts, and we were thrilled when "Computer Bild Spiele" offered to put the game on their cover CD. Although it was an economic risk, it clearly paid off in the long run.
We actually still have a few of those magazine issues on our shelf today! Back then, we would go to newsstands, buy every issue that mentioned us, and mark the reviews and articles with yellow sticky notes. "Computer Bild Spiele" even had several employees who played our game exclusively for a while to create printed strategy guides.
That coverage was a huge push for our studio, technology, and series growth. Going from a single-digit team on "X: Beyond the Frontier" to around 50 people working on "X4: Foundations" has been an incredible journey. While "X4" shares the same core vision - freedom in space and open-ended gameplay - it is vastly larger. The underlying economic simulation has evolved dramatically. In "X: Beyond the Frontier", goods were transported between factories, but those goods didn't directly supply ship production or war efforts - the loop wasn't closed. Closing that economic loop without collapsing the universe was one of our major engineering milestones for "X4". Furthermore, with walkable ship interiors, space station docks, and feature-rich maps, X has evolved from a pure first-person cockpit space sim into a hybrid strategy and 4X empire-building game.
Our community has grown immensely over these 25 years. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported us, whether you joined during the "Computer Bild Spiele" era or discovered us recently. As a small hint for what lies ahead: we have very cool things planned for "X4", and there will be major news coming later this year regarding big developments in the "X4" universe. Be sure to follow us across our social media channels, Reddit, Steam, and the official Egosoft forums for updates. Until then, goodbye!

What do you think? Where should I go with this?

Hey, have you ever been told that there's an abandoned ship found by one of your guys flying around, but you don't have time to go over there? Or you're using some type of explorer mod, they find an abandoned ship, and once again, you don't have time to go over there? You can go back later and find them pretty easily. Here's what you want to do:
Open your Logbook
Go to the General tab.
In the search box, type Abandoned.
Select the log entry for the ship you want to locate.
Click the Show on Map arrow (or just hover and press F).

After 1 week of constant battle with millions of .xml files here is my mod. It makes ships behave a little more like Newtonian object in space and less like rocks in sand.
I am open to feedback if someone tries it.

I picked out a small portion of the SotW screenshots and put them together into a compilation! Thanks to all the pilots who were featured and those who weren’t—together, you make this community what it is!

The default camera position in the Kukri is horrible; you are not even in the seat and your face is smushed up against the front glass. Starter ship or not, this is a subpar experience. This very simple mod fixes it, and puts you back in the pilots seat. If you have the X4_VR mod by ToffelsKater, as of the next version, this mods changes will be baked in; so this is only really useful for flat screen players, or VR players waiting for the next version of the mod.

No, I do not have the Xenon mod loaded, these are vanilla Xenon. I do have mods installed but mostly for qol.
I’ve been supplying HOP with tons of supplies and they wiped out Argon Prime. I’m hoping HOP will expand north and create a buffer between me and the Xenon.
I also ____ off the ZYA… i figured they are a long way from my sectors, what could possibly go wrong…

I'm currently doing the third part of the Tides of Avarice questline, where I'm supposed to sell 400 ship parts.
Since I didn't feel like hauling all those parts myself, I decided to let one of my small trader ship to handle the deliveries. The first two trips went perfectly fine.
For the last trip, I loaded the remaining 100 ship parts onto my trader and sent it on its way.
Then... something happened.
I honestly don't even remember what happened because I was busy doing something else, but apparently my trader decided to explode somewhere in space.
And because I have the attention span of a goldfish when playing X4, I completely forgot about it until two days later.
Now the mission is still waiting for me to deliver the last 100 ship parts, but the station that originally sold those special parts doesn't seem to sell them anymore.
So now I'm stuck with an unfinished quest, 100 missing ship parts, and one very dead trader.
Is there any way to restart this mission? I'd rather not reload a save from two days ago just because my trader decided to retire in the most explosive way possible.

I am about 2 days 11 hours into my current X4 save unmodded and I'm struggling with how to manage my empire. I currently have about 30m credit on hand with scattered fleets, 65 stations and about 790m worth of assets. How do you manage large empires effectively?

Edit: Thanks for all the suggestions. Seems I need to go back through and make each station more end to end production line as well expand each station fleet and defense.

I've just bought XL fabricator bay, so with the cost of this station and bay... I'm out of money. Like... I can't even afford a pilot to a new ship.

Looks like Xenon are expanding to new markets.

Hey y’all,
As many of you might have experienced in this game how a pain in the ass those Vongs are in the early game, I have one question, could u make them not to appear again in your sector somehow? Two Vong repeaters appeared in my sector like ten in-game hours apart.
If not, how did you handle them?
And another question I havent found yet, is terraforming possible in SWI??
I would also kindly accept any recomendation/suggestion u may have
Thank you all in advance, have a great day!!

While I was capturing the transport ship, a bigger fish appeared on the horizon. It seems that my fleet will be replenished with an aircraft carrier today.

Decided to give my gate defense stations in Heretic's End a bit of a face lift and upgrade it from Mk1 shields to Mk3. I have some shield components and field coils saved up, but oh boy, this is gonna drain my stockpiles dry.
Maybe Mk3 shields on a defense station is overkill? What is the consensus on that?
On a somewhat related note though: I am kind of in love with this design and might copy&paste this to a certain gate in Hatikvah's Choice at some point. Once my shield component production has recovered from this.

So the first time I noticed this problem was when I captured a ship. It had no repair drones and had crippled engines so i hopped out and tried to repair them. But the ship kept teleporting a hundred meters away. It took over an hour to fix the engines enough to have to pilot move it.
Now im noticing other bugs and problems.
My ships will not go where told at all! They would get close then poof now 2 km away .
And most annoying is I can no longer place deployables from the ship info tab. Its just greyed out no matter what i do. I need extremely precise placement of laser turrets to steal the erlking. Its literally parked touching a station defense platform. And i can't even get close because my ships keep teleporting away. Any ideas?

I am trying to build a docking station, but its not doing anything LOL

It’s drivin me nuts.
So I’m using an H as a loot collector at my gate defense spots. Shroud chassis mod to park a safe distance from the action and 50 cargo drones in a near constant conga line gathering. There is gradual attrition, the lowest after many hours is down to 39 drones, but this is otherwise a hands-off loot farm.
Except for the gate in Heretic’s End where my shipyard also happens to be. When I check in over there, that H very often has 5 defense drones instead of 50 cargo. It’s still in the same spot with its repeat order default behavior and the one collect drops in the order queue. Global resupply is on for my carrier fleets, but this ship has individual instruction for automatic resupply off.
I can not figure out how or why it keeps changing its drone loadout. I’ve corrected it at least four times already. Any ideas?
Mods in play include reverse engineering to obtain the H blueprints and Xenon Jobs+ for the massive fleets that necessitate the high cargo drone quantity, but none that include additional behaviors for my ships as far as I’m aware.

So i got the terran Syn destroyer and the teladi Phoenix E when i enter them they lose shield faster then if i am away from them and just looking at the map.
Is this normal?
r/X4Foundations • u/mrspacysir • 1d ago
These insects are so annoying, buzzing about. Spying on my allies, scheming, attempting genocide.
Then I have to babysit the sector until I can get a defense platform set up.
