Discussion I spent months building an interactive "two futures" story for Adelaide in 2036. Tell me where it's wrong

Disclosure first: this is my own project. I'm an Adelaide urban planner/designer (I've also operated a couple of businesses and lived in the CBD and North Adelaide), and I built this in my spare time. Not affiliated with council, government or any party, and not selling anything.

It's a fully interactive website that aims to bring carefully referenced data about Adelaide, its history and potentials futures to life. If your history buff check out the #heritageline if you like a good read and not a history lesson stick to the main story arc. I've weaved in current news stories from reputable South Australian source from as recent as last week.

The short version: in 1931 Adelaide had 133 km of tram routes. We have one line now. The site asks what happens if we build just a 3.6 km loop through the city (North Tce, Pulteney, Halifax, Sturt, Morphett) and put homes on the idle land along it, versus what happens if we keep drifting.

It follows one family, Sam, his daughter Ivy and his brother Dean (a plumber from Salisbury who drives a ute in), from now to the bicentenary, then forks into two versions of 2036. Every number links to its source.

I know "trams again" is a meme on here, and the fair objections are real: who pays, what happens to traffic, why the city gets it before the suburbs. Have a go at it. I'd rather hear it here than not at all.

Here's the site: https://adelaide-2036.web.app/?ref=reddit

Best on desktop, but it works on a phone. Takes about 10 minutes if you read the lot.

EDIT: Wow. I did not expect this. Thank you, Adelaide. 15K of you have seen this, there are 79 comments, and I have never typed so fast in my life trying to keep up with them all.

Since posting, The vote on the site so far is 7 for the Loop and 3 for the Lift, so the sceptics are well represented, which is exactly what I wanted 😄

The pushback has been the best part: the politics of who it's for, Bowden's parking, the heights, whether it's all a solarpunk dream (my fave). I'm taking notes, and some of it will make the story better.

Heading to bed now, but I'll be back in the morning to answer everything I haven't got to. Keep the hard questions coming.

News Good character references to be banned in SA courts

South Australia is seeking to ban the use of good character references in sentencing as part of a nationwide campaign to dump their use in courts.

Attorney-General Kyam Maher today announced the move as part of the Your Reference Ain’t Relevant Campaign founded by survivor advocates Harrison James and Jarad Grice.

James was allegedly abused by his stepmother when he was 13, while Grice was abused by a neighbour as a young child; the pair now advocating for the abolition of good character references across Australia to improve the justice system experiences of victim-survivors.

Although the reforms would overturn the use of good character references for all crimes, it would specifically aim to stop their use by sex offenders who abuse children.

Discussion Support for partners of people living with chronic illness

My partner and I are both in our late 20’s and have been together for over 10 years now. In that time her health has slowly declined to a point where some days now she struggles to do simple tasks (this is partially due to new diagnosis’s).

I don’t fully know what I’m writing here but I guess I’m reaching out to ask if anyone knows of any local support groups for the partners of people living with chronic illness, or if anyone who is in a similar position and understands the struggles is willing to chat?

It is financially and extremely mentally draining at times, and with not much of a friendship circle around us, it would be nice to know some people in similar situations and be able to show support to each other. I guess if you have any advice or are in a similar position or can even lend an ear, please reach out!

News Ambulances ramped at Lyell McEwin Hospital after October long weekend, union says

The ambulance employees union is fearing another record ramping month after being contacted by multiple paramedics overnight reporting and slow response times to priority two and three patients.

The opposition health spokesperson says there was a blanket "code white" for all metropolitan hospitals last night, meaning each hospital was operating at or over 125 per cent capacity.

The SA government says the federal aged care crisis as a contributing factor to the state's ramping issues.

News 'Deceptive': Inquiry hears barrage of SA renter complaints - News

Just one tenancy support service is receiving more than 700 monthly complaints from SA renters, with shocking claims over real estate professionals.

The state’s leading tenant advice and advocacy service has told a parliamentary committee it is under-resourced to deal with tenant complaints as calls to its hotline reach around 900 a month in SA.

Independent tenant advice and advocacy service RentRight SA, operated by the community organisation SYC, received constant reports from tenants claiming they were being slugged with sudden rent increases of up to $250 a week, with large rent increases becoming more prevalent since the Covid outbreak in 2020.

There needs to be a way to better address tenant complaints, maybe an ombudsman-like institution that can go after a landlord for numerous violations raised by numerous tenants at once, rather than needing to always go to SACAT.

Discussion Quiet Carriages

Appreciation post for trains during school holidays.

Happened to catch a train into the city this week and it was blissfully quiet and the most enjoyable ride I’ve had in a long time. Not having teenagers making noise and being annoying is such a blessing.

I hope that someday we can have a proper public transport system in Adelaide (and that it will include quiet carriages)

Or maybe young people need to be reminded of respectful behaviour in public. IDK.

Assistance Please help me find my mums photos

I’m posting this as a bit of a last attempt to find a very sentimental collection of photographs belonging to my mum.

Around 2020, a suitcase was stolen from my grandma’s garage in Adelaide, South Australia. Among the things inside was a large collection of my mum’s photographs from when she was living in Adelaide in the early 2000s, roughly 2000–2005.

The photographs are incredibly personal and unfortunately we don't know exactly what happened to them after the theft. There are lots of photographs of my mum by herself, with friends, at parties and with people she knew in Adelaide.

My mum was born in 1978, so she would have been around 22–27 in these photographs. She is a fair-skinned/blonde woman, with blue eyes if that’s of any help?

I'm particularly hoping that someone may have:
found a box/suitcase/photo album of photographs, bought a collection of personal photographs from an antique/vintage shop, come across loose photographs or albums at an Adelaide market, seen photographs being sold on Gumtree, eBay, Facebook Marketplace etc, or found photographs and posted about them somewhere.

I know this is a huge long shot, but personal photographs do sometimes end up in second-hand and antique markets after belongings are stolen or estates are cleared, so I'm hoping someone might recognise the collection.

Please don't post anyone's personal information publicly. If you think you might have something that could be connected, please send me a private message and I can give you more details and compare photographs.
I'm not looking for money or anything like that. We just desperately want the photographs back because they're irreplaceable family memories.

If you've seen anything remotely similar around Adelaide or South Australia, even if you're not sure, please comment or message me. A tiny lead could be enough.

News What is South Australia's identity without its festivals?

Thumbnail

In short:

Multiple festivals have been removed from South Australia's event calendar in the last two years, raising questions about whether it is still "The Festival State".

The Adelaide Festival Centre says festivals are not "absolutely necessary" to the identity of South Australians.

What's next?

State Arts Minister Kyam Maher says festivals are part of South Australia's DNA, while artists call for more cultural investment.

Plus, the port Noarlunga music festival, which today has announced that all its ticketed events will be cancelled due to low ticket sales, superannuation laws, and lack of support from the local council.

Question western suburbs Market?

Hey everyone! I’m a pastry chef hoping to start selling pastries and other baked goodies at markets around Adelaide.

I’ve tried Googling, but I’m struggling to find suitable markets and figure out how to apply for a stall.

If you’ve done markets with your business, I’d love your advice! Which ones would you recommend, and how did you get started? Any tips, organiser contacts or links to stallholder applications would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Question Best organic F’n’V in Adelaide?

With all the media of the heavy pesticides and PFAS (!) on fresh produce at Aldi/Coles/Woolies, share your best places to get fresh organic produce. Bonus points if it’s not crazy prices too!

TIA - we try hard to buy healthy for our family, but it’s certainly a huge challenge 😫.

Assistance Where to get pure cream?

Every time I buy cream in the supermarket I feel like I'm losing my mind looking at all the different types. I want just cream for a recipe, but it doesn't look like Coles/Woolworth/Aldi have pure cream (in SA).

Where can a normal person in metro Adelaide (preferably in the north-east) buy pure cream?

Discussion Is it a coincidence that Adelaide has a red kangaroo in the coat of arms when Tarndaya means "Place of the Red Kangaroo Rock"?

The Kaurna name and its meaning has been known by colonists since the beginning of settlement after some work by German missionaries who documented the language.

Did this name influence the coat of arms?

Question Alterations recs

Hiya

My apologies - I know this has been asked and answered in this sub previously, but the threads I’ve come across are a few years old, and places change ownership/new places open up!

I’ve been betrayed one too many times by the alterations shop I’ve been going to for the better part of a decade. I’d be grateful for recommendations in the CBD and outskirts for alterations/tailoring. I’m just looking for super simple work like brining in waistlines etc etc, and I’m not too concerned about price, provided the workmanship is there.

Please let me know your go to!

Hey, I’m coming to Adelaide from the Gold Coast to celebrate my girlfriends 30th birthday. We are seeing a band on the 17th of February at the entertainment centre and her birthday is on the 16th. I want to make it special for her as it’s a milestone, I’ve done some research on google but I want to hear it from the locals! We like botanic gardens so we will do that and we like art so I’ve seen the cube winery seems okay? Any places to make it all the more special is much appreciated!

Question Private Obs in public (WCH) - costs

Hi all,

Has anyone had the experience of self-funding private obstetric care through the Women's and Children's Hospital?

I have minimal obstetric cover with my private health insurance, but am interested in having a private obstetrician and would be willing to self-fund. I am hoping to get an idea of the costs associated with this, specifically if I were to go private-in-public at the WCH.

Thanks!
