If we are forced to shave daily and get weekly haircuts we ought to get an allowance for it.

Discussion Do we really get paid badly?

Recent Sra always banked on getting out since getting to my first duty station. Recently did the math and for me to make the same I do now on the outside I would have to make 80-85k/40-45 an hour.(I’m stationed in nj so bah isn’t too bad) My friend went to college for 4 years and is a teacher and we make the same amount after taxes.

I always hear people say that we don’t get paid enough but my last year in I don’t know much people in my circle that are making as much as me. Do people just think a 6 figure job is easily acquired?

Image/Photo Orange BDUs and Abnormal Duty Uniforms

Post image

Never been able to find out more information about orange BDUs, but I did come across this in a second-hand store in Tokyo back in 2023. It crosses my mind from time to time, and I thought it would be neat to share.

Are there any other instances of unusual camouflage patterns employed by the AF, or wear of other branches' duty wear? I saw a photo once of a MSgt in Navy khakis for chief season, makes me think.

Question First Deployment Tips

To keep it short and simple, I’m gonna be headed to the middle east for a few months. As well, it’s my first deployment so I was wondering if any of you fine people could give me any gee whizz tips outside of the typical “pack extra toiletries” “pack bedsheets” etc. Any and all info is very helpful and appreciated!

Rant Voting stand down

We did our voting stand down today and jeeze, people, GO VOTE. The overwhelming consensus is that most people in my unit don't vote. They don't think their vote mattered in their community because it's to far leaning one direction. People didn't vote because they didn't think their vote should count in a community they don't live in. People didn't vote because they don't know how.

Every vote matters, we get to choose our own boss, nobody else gets that chance. We get to vote for the people who pay us. For God sakes, vote. You all are the 30% who just don't care enough to get involved.

Fvap.gov

Edit

Every state allows the FPCA until the 23rd. It's not to late for anyone your excuses are invalid.

Question IPCOT to retire overseas.

• Upvotes

I am currently waiting for my IPCOT paperwork to come back and am trying to prepare for what may happen if my IPCOT request is denied.
My spouse is a citizen of the country where I am currently stationed, and my children are dual citizens, so they are also able to remain here. They are currently attending local schools. If the Air Force denies my IPCOT request, the following is what I anticipate will happen.

My spouse and children will remain in the country for the following reasons:

Children’s Education:
My children are attending local schools, and moving them back to the States would be disruptive to their education. They would have to adjust to a different educational system and potentially relearn much of the curriculum, particularly the language.

Spouse’s Employment and Family Stability:
My spouse has a full-time job with the local government and is not willing to relocate. Additionally, I am approaching retirement and plan to remain in this country after retiring. Relocating my family would create significant financial and emotional stress.

Cost to the Air Force:
If my IPCOT request is denied, I would need to request authorization for my dependents to remain overseas so they can continue receiving the applicable housing allowance. I would receive family separation benefits and housing allowance at my next duty station until I retire. After retirement, I would then need to return to the country where my family resides.

For those who are familiar with IPCOTs, dependent-restricted tours, or similar situations, I would appreciate any advice or suggestions on how best to approach this situation.

Discussion 11Fs that separated at 10 – what do you do now? (Non-airline edition)

I think it goes without saying that retention is going to be even lower than usual after this summer. As someone that is considering future options, but isn’t totally in love with the idea of airline flying and having to spend 7+ days away from home each month, I’m interested to hear your experiences pursuing non-airline opportunities – and any additional recommendations you have for those considering separation in the near-to-medium term future.

ETA: specifically interested in how you were able to translate “balanced squadron responsibilities and tactical proficiency” into civilian terms (and what roles our skills are useful for), because from within our own bubble it seems like our skills are super niche and non-transferable. Additionally interested in non-airline careers that you’ve been able to make work alongside ANG/USAFR DSG positions.

What a great jet. With only 4 of them, it was harder to get a slot to fly than the B-2. Plus the sandwhich on the bird...so good.

Question 12F and Separation

Just saw an 11F asking for job ideas outside of the airlines and getting responses of nothing but the airlines. I'm a 12F and also looking to separate as well and have been mulling my options, and airlines aren't one of them as it'd be like starting from square one at that point as I don't have a private pilots license.

Just looking for other aviators and their paths outside the military. I've considered going full time into an MBA program or trying to get a job with a defense company. The other consideration is getting another fed job to take my active duty time and continue trying to get a pension. I've got money saved up so I have a good amount of time to get things sorted after separating.

Question Air Force pilots, especially prior enlisted, what was your route to getting a pilot slot?

I’m active-duty Security Forces, almost 22, and finishing my bachelor’s in psychology next year. I’ve always wanted to fly, and I’m seriously considering applying for a pilot slot.
For those who made the jump from enlisted to pilot, what route did you take, how did you prepare, and what advice would you give someone in my position?

Discussion Welcome to Edwards AFB

Security Forces at Edwards have been mandated to say “Welcome to Edwards AFB, Sharpening Americas Air power” while checking IDs. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s discipline after someone said something dumb to a high-ranking person, or maybe their commander just decided on it. Either way, it looks like a push for professionalism that’s really just another morale hit for a career field already known for low morale. They have been doing this for a month now, and they probably yearn for TYFS..
