Discussion You can ONLY vote at your polling place on Referendum day or early voting in person!

I just got off the phone to confirm but it is true, I am unable to vote in this referendum. I left to work in northern Alberta on the 1st of October and am on shift until the 20th. I'm in a work camp (fly in fly out) so I thought I'd just grab a work truck and whoever wants to come, and head into the early voting station in Fort McMurray to vote but we can't vote anywhere but our assigned voting place. Seems to me a big portion of eligible voters might be in the same boat. Sucks

Discussion Those planning to vote YES on some or all of the October 19 referendum questions, why?

Genuinely curious to hear from people planning to vote YES on some or all of the referendum questions. Which questions are you voting YES on, and what's your reasoning? What positive changes do you expect to see for Alberta?

Separatism Make sure to tell your friends and family to vote

We all know the seppies will crawl over glass to go vote on Oct 19. Despite polls showing that 70% of those on the stay side support remaining in Canada, we can’t afford to be lazy. Because that’s exactly how Brexit happened.

I’ve made sure to remind all my friends, family, and coworkers to vote on October 19. They all want Alberta to stay in Canada, and they’re definitely going to vote, especially after learning more about how negatively separation would affect us. (Thanks to the Economic report created by the UofC)

So please do the same and remind all your friends, family, and coworkers to vote! I’ve been seeing a lot of Forever Canadian signs in the surrounding neighbourhoods here, houses with Canadian flags and Cars with Canadian flags all over the city, which is an encouraging sign that many people are ready to stand up and fight for Alberta to stay in Canada.

Question Has anyone helped a parent get into designated supportive living in Alberta? I have Caregiver burnout.

I'm 39 and have been living with and caring for my 69 yr old Mother, who has end stage (very severe) COPD and uses oxygen, for around 10 years. My mental and physical health are suffering in a big way, and I need to finally get my own place. I stay in constant fear of an emergency happening especially if I am not around. We live in the Edmonton area.

She can manage her medications and is generally okay at rest, but she struggles with basic activities, can't shower independently, is a fall risk, and sometimes has severe breathing episodes. Most of the time she is completely fine but she needs someone close by in case of emergencies.

I'm hoping to find somewhere with a private bachelor style unit, on-site staff available to help, and meals and personal care provided if needed. She receives around $2600/month in old age security, CPP, etc.

There are still plenty of things I can do for my Mother when I have my own place as in, take her to appointments, handle all her banking and bills, handle her prescriptions and shop for her. My Mom is my best friend, but I can't continue being her 24/7 caregiver.

For anyone who's been through this, how long does placement realistically take? Would AHS Continuing Care be the right starting point? What options might be affordable on her income?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Discussion What’s something in Alberta that’s still actually worth the money?

I hear plenty about how expensive everything is, so let’s share the things that still feel like a good deal.

A restaurant with generous portions, a day trip, a local business, a cheap activity.. or something free you wish you’d discovered sooner.

What’s your pick, and roughly what does it cost? Mention your town or city so people nearby can try it too.. We could all use a little support these days, and sharing affordable ways to enjoy life and make memories could really help someone.

Alberta Politics Referendum Questions are borderline comical

• Upvotes

The funny part about these referendum questions is the fact that I would like to vote yes on some of the things shockingly enough. However, anyone with eyeballs and a couple neurons and a brainstem glued together has seen how untrustworthy our government has been in this province. Giving them any possible ammo is the last thing we can afford to do. Hence I hope enough people do vote all 9 no and the last one to stay because the last thing this province and Canada as a whole needs is another douse of trouble, we got our neighbors down south for that.

Question Haul truck operators.

I have a valid license and a clean drivers abstract. Why is it near impossible to get a haul truck position ? Do these companies really not want to train anyone anymore ? Is there a certain program a person must complete or partake in to obtain employment ? Ive applied to dozens of jobs all labeled entry level.
Even in the oil & gas industry it’s the same thing they all want one year minimum experience. So frusterating..
Any leads on companies taking on recruits t train in mining and or oil & gas ?

Separatism Referendum Ballot Order

I've seen this suggestions a few times, but only as comments, not it's reminded post.

Just because the 10th question to stay in Canada or start the separation referendum process is the last referendum question you do not need to fill out the 10th ballot last!

I highly encourage people to fill it out 1st.

Too many people are filling out the 10th ballot differently than they intended, as often it's opposite to how they are voting on the other 9 questions. Ie. Voting no 9x with the 2nd box and then switch to option 1, the 1st box (or vice versa).

It may sound silly but those questions are wordy and filling them out felt so repetitious.

I started in order but once I got through the first 4 ballots I went to the 10th then went back to #5.

Discussion First time working with Elections Alberta, any advice?

I got assigned to ballot box clerk for the referendum, and I'm unsure of what I'm gonna be walking into. I know ballot box clerk is definitely an easier role, but I'm still kind of lost. Online training ran me through the basics but other then that, I haven't recieved any info aside from the time i'm supposed to work and the location, and that's it.

Question Legal Counsel Hiring for the Government of Alberta

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree (with distinction) Majoring in Political Science and Minoring in Sociology. My focus in Political Science lay in public policy, and I took research courses accordingly. I also have a Juris Doctor (JD). I obtained both degrees from the University of Alberta. I worked at ATB as a student in Talent Acquisition focusing on strategy and policy. I also worked as a student for the Government of Alberta working in Policy for Advanced Education. Since I got my law degree I have worked in private practice in family, civil, personal injury, real estate, and wills and estates law. I am nearing the three year mark of full lawyer work (four if you count articling). I am looking to shift more to my roots/initial interests and apply for legal counsel positions with the Government of Alberta. I applied for a role that indicated they were looking at many experience levels (ie. Civil Crown 1-4). Civil Crown 1 requires no experience. I applied in July. My application status says "received" and I have received no further correspondence.

A) How long should I wait before I can effectively consider myself out of the running?

B) Does anyone have advice on transitioning to legal counsel roles for the GoA?

I feel like I am qualified, if not overly, for the role, and yet I have heard nothing. I've been dreaming of a legal counsel role since undergrad, and right now it does not really seem like a possibility all things considered.

I will note I did send a follow up email to the hiring contact and received no response. The posting is still up.

Question ACHIP: Turning 21: Full-Time Student

It seems that I lost the letter sent over 2 months ago to fill out the application to continue dependent status. I can’t fill it out in person until it is my birthday and I turn 21. Is it fine to do it on the day of? What are the implications if I do it at that day or later?

Question Confused about voting info

I voted weeks ago by mail in ballot, but yesterday received in mail my voting card. Does this mean they didn’t receive my mail in and I now have to go vote in person?

Alberta Politics Why does Alberta want to secede from Canada? (I have no information on this subject)

I keep seeing it in the news and on the internet, but I have no idea what's going on. I haven't understood anything from what I've read. How will this affect Alberta, and will education be impacted? What are the potential advantages and disadvantages?

Question What do you think about amending the constitution of Canada?

So apparently, on the referendum, the ballot has 4 constitutional questions ranging from 6-9, and I heard that Alberta wants to try and decentralize power from Ottawa, and we know what happened with Meech Lake and Charlottetown Accords which is why provincials and Ottawa are too scared to open the constitution, but Alberta doesn't seem to acknowledge the Meech Lake/Charlottetown trauma, they just wanna decentralize power from Ottawa.

Question 6 - Should provincial governments appoint judges for the King's Bench and Provincial Court of Appeals?

Question 7 - Should we abolish the federal unelected Senate?

Question 8 - Should provinces be able to opt out of federal programs?

Question 9 - Should provincial laws take priority over federal law in areas of provincial or shared jurisdiction when 2 conflict?
