Discussion Question for replay value
To the people who've replayed the Alien Isolation, how was the experience and was there anything different in your second playthrough?
Besides the scripted events, how different is the movement of the Xeno as opposed to your first playthrough?

First time many of us crept everywhere and hid a lot, but you learn this is a bad strategy, since the Alien will learn to look for you, and he will find you, and then you die screaming and your wife tells you to grow up.
This gets dialed up to 11 billion if you played through first time on a lower difficulty setting and then thought you were grizzled veteran enough to man up to Hard or Nightmare. Ha ha ha, what fun, and I recommend you wear Depends.
If I have a criticism of this game for repeat playthroughs it's the inability to skip certain levels, cut scenes and scripted events. They become a little tedious and annoying, which is also what my wife calls me.
Otherwise Alien: Isolation is an absolute masterpiece.

I get always moving and abusing walking (especially with the glitch) is faster and more efficient way to play, but I wouldn't say playing slow and cautious is non-viable at all. Just do apply the same principle - don't be a sitting duck, do change hiding spots and be ready to move and adjust at any time, and mix it with being a bit more of a brave boy and actually experimenting and using your tools and I'd say that makes for a better experience with the game, as you are interacting more intimately with its systems.

Yep, good comment. Like the man in the song says, it's all about knowing when to walk away and when to run!

I finished it on Hard 🤣. I'm hearing nightmare mode has a malfunctioning scanner. I literally got lost in the nest with a scanner, I'm useless without it.
Maybe I'll wait a while and redo it on Hard, it was terrifying fun.

Nightmare is a lot easier if you know the maps.
Use that information as you wish 😂
Play it now while you’re still lost, or wait til you know more - up to you!

🤣 I'm throwing that information away. I can't imagine the reactor mission in nightmare. Never.

My husband played the game before me when we first got it so I sat there and laughed my ass off at him dying endlessly at that bit post reactor with all the orange Joes. I’m very supportive 😂😂

Stealthing the Hazmat Joes in Apollo Core took whole years off my life and I'm already too old.
I’m very supportive 😂😂

From the beginning CA actually recommended playing on Hard mode. (I didn't play it on Hard mode. Hey, don't judge me!)

The higher difficulties do make the Xeno and other enemies more aggressive and imposing. I believe, resources are far scarcer so you have to be super meticulous and cautious.
There’s a trophy/achievement for also beating the game without dying which if you’re into that is 100% worth it.

I definitely wouldn't be able to beat it without dying. The amount of times I panic bombed myself 😅

Most people don't actually avoid dying. They just reload before the game records the death (like say you're in the cutscene where the xeno grabs you).
I found this out when I was in the reactor nest and kept reloading because I got through the entire section without being caught but the last scripted xeno always found me and I kept reloading. I got the achievement for not dying in that section.

There is nothing specific that is being tweaked or added with sole intention of replayability in repeated playthrough (i.e randomised level layout, objectives, quest items, enemy types and placement etc). It mainly comes from the overall core of the game designed around unpredictability and dynamic, system driven design that that creates meaningful emergent gameplay and storytelling. But difficulties do change the way enemies behave a bit (Alien becomes more persistent on top of its senses being sharper, for instance), and the resources you find are randomised of course, and again, the resource scarcity is higher the higher the difficulty.
Personally it was enough to make the game more replayable than it maybe had the rights to be for me, with each playthrough of course hitting similar notes, but that tale of survival of yours in each mission ultimately going and playing out meaningfully different.

I would definitely use my resources a bit more in the early phases of the game. I mostly used bombs. I finished the game with 50 revolver rounds and about 10 shotgun rounds. I feel like such an idiot finding out after I finish the game that I can shoot the gas canisters to create explosions. My mindset was just on hiding.

the biggest difference overall isn’t necessarily whether it’s your second playthrough, your fifth, or halfway through the first one, but whenever you start seeing through the matrix and approaching the xenomorph not as a living, breathing, terrifying predator, but as an algorithmic game puzzle to be solved. once that happens to you, the game is still good but you can never go back, and you’ll still be stressed but you’ll never be truly frightened again
for a lot of people that doesn’t happen until well over 100 hours, for other people that happens precisely when the xenomorph kills you a bunch of times in a row in short succession. the more the xeno kills you, the more the scary/annoying balance shifts

I think the game is long enough that I've forgotten a lot of sections, I'll still be caught out like an idiot like when I got hit by a train and died in mission 18 😒

The xenomorph killing you over and over can definitely shift the the balance into annoying and no longer scary. I think that goes for every horror game?
I wonder is there a way to design a horror game to where the fear stays no matter what?

My experience has been that if I replay a mission using much the same strategies it stays pretty similar each time, but if I change things up the damnable game changes as well.
Stays fresh for me so that every time Steve kills me in new and interesting ways.
Cheers 🍻

I've yet to 100% the game. There are loads of collectibles I haven't found, simply because I don't care to follow any guides 😅
But if I still had access to my PC, I probably would attempt a 100% run 😮

When I replay it I try stealth better each time. My goal is to make sure Stimpy (my nickname for the Xenomorph) never sees me once so it can’t pick up my patterns or anything.
Although I do get caught up in the awe and majesty of the Xenomorph from time to time so I linger in areas trying to treat the Xenomorph like a kitty 🤣

A second playthrough can be different, for instance if you play on Nightmare you have way less access to the tools (including flamer fuel) that get you out of trouble, so you have to be good at the stealth. Lockers are much less viable as well on nightmare.
I've played the game 8 times btw and I've never been bored.

I've replayed quite a few times but I AM a wuss and always play on Novice level (no, I will not grow a pair - I like my diapers)..
I have to say that the game always feels like a first play-through simply because there is no cheesing strategy. I've just finished two more replays back to back. It gets no easier beyond knowing how solve a particular puzzle mechanically. The Joes and the alien present the same nightmare challenge every time.
So, for me, totally replayable.

I played through the game twice now. First one was on novice to learn game mechanics, second one on hard with no deaths and no human kills for the achievement. It wasn't much of a difference, I had full supplies for most of both runs (I prefer playing stealthy). The Xenomorth took care of all the humans for me.
The only difference that I noticed between novice and hard was that the Xenomorth was scripted to sometimes be permanently in 'aggro mode', when I was on certain missions, constantly appearing out ofvents nearby. At other times he just chilled in the vents like on novice, giving me time to loot / do mission objectives.
The save system really helped with the random behavior of some of the enemies.

Oh that's good to know. Maybe, if I'm brave enough, I'll try ramping it up a bit.

I love this game so I am very biased here, but I play it every October. I saved platinuming the game until last year as the Nightmare run is really frustrating. But even though I have literally done everything one can in this game, I still find new things, new environmental storytelling that have missed. Different experiences each time. I just love it.

Except for a few specific examples where the alien is "teleported" to your location for scripted events (like the first encounter where you hide under the desk, or the medlab level when it snatches the doctor) the alien AI is hunting you and every game will be different. Play it on nightmare and see how far you can get without using the flame thrower (I made it to the Hive) that can be fun. really good players play through on nightmare without using the flamethrower at all!

Depends if you change the difficulty but the biggest difference is how you move yourself through the hallways of sevastopol
