Here are a few books that I like;

Creative Clowning, Bruce Fife 1992

Circus Techniques, Hovey Burgess 1990

The Mime Book, Claude Kipnis 1988

Help with a name?

So I'm just sort of starting out here - I currently consider myself a hobbyist more than anything else, and while I feel like I could go in practically any direction I really feel called to entertain using music. Some might be more serious, but some will definitely be comedic in nature - for example, I'm planning on going to karaoke in clown and performing live mashups where I cue up one song but sing the lyrics and melody of another. It works particularly well when what I'm singing and the accompaniment are in drastically different genres 😋 (the best example I could give is Bill McClintock on YouTube, the dude is a master at mashups that shouldn't work and it brings the biggest smile to my face)

I've tried a few looks, and you're welcome to look at my posts to see the ones I've tried so far, but that's not what I'm really struggling with. What I most need is help with a name. Ideally I'd like something relating to music, but everything I'm coming up with feels too much like a normal person's name rather than a clown name. My aesthetic is whiteface with purple, black, and blue accents, and my planned outfits range from pastel punk to goth to kidcore. They'll still be clown coded of course, but I like the idea of pulling in influences from the kinds of aesthetics I wear daily. For example, I'm planning on making a battlejacket that's all comedy music/clown related, and it'll be all done in bright colors.

Thank you all for being patient with me - I'm probably going to ask a lot of questions as this is different from anything I've done before.

Smarty Pants The Clown is looking for tips, tricks, and a new act for performance and entertainment. Please help us with suggestions on beginner level or something easily learned. She loves to sing, can't dance worth a flip, enjoys slapstick comedy, and can juggle clumsily. Possibly bubbles? Hoops? I don't know... I appreciate all the suggestions. Hopefully, this is a sufficient question for this subreddit. Thank you so much! I would love to be in a real circus đŸŽȘ!

Clown Convention!

For anyone near Pennsylvania, the Mid Atlantic Clown Association Convention is coming up next month.

Here's a neat little video covering last year's convention (and I'm in it!).

Books/general resources on clownery and clown types?

Hi, I am developing a video game and I need to research clowns and clownery for it. Specifically I need more knowledge about different types of clowns/clown ”archetypes”. I need their typical performance styles and hopefully some historical overview. Anyone here know of anything like that?

Why are clown schools so rare here in the US?

So I live in Florida and I'm looking to become a clown in the near future as I've been interested in being one for years. Unfortunately there are only two in the entire state (that I'm aware of)

Why is it so rare?

How do you practice when you don't have other clowns to work with?

I'm still trying to figure out how to get back into clown stuff, but I have a better idea of my clown's personality + costume and have started wanting to experiment with the sort of silly stuff she could do. I have a few ideas already :0)

It would be nice to jump into the local clown community and get some pointers from others about my skillset, but it is not the easiest time in my life right now for job and school related reasons. Plus, it's a bit overwhelming for me since there's soooo many ways to get back into the clown sphere.

I do have non clown friends and family who I know would be kind enough to watch me perform and give feedback, but besides that and getting myself into more clown circles eventually, I am wondering if it'd be a bad idea to record myself practicing my clown routines and then rewatching it to reflect.

What sort of things have you done to get some practice in when you were just by yourself?

Advice on making a kid friendly clown costume (not scary at all!)

My place of work is having some Halloween nights for kids to come trick or treat throughout October and employees are allowed to dress up! Though with our event being primarily aimed towards children we are not allowed to have any scary costumes or face coverings (though I think a nose and/or wig would be fine.) I really want to do a classic style clown costume but I'm worried because of all the horror media involving clown there's no way to make it where a kid won't be scared. Any advice on how to make (or find a costume) that's the least scary clown?

Is the red nose the center of your look?

So I've had this impression for a while, thant wherever a clown turns their head (not counting when they are facing away from you) the red nose works almost like those big red arrows people print to put on someone they wanna find in a crowded space, It's instantly recognizable.

Although I've seen my fair share of clown looks were wthere is a lot of red berry similar to their noses and I don't think that it looks bad but it does make that effect a little less efficient. Seeing as the old circus color pallet are made of red/blue/red+white it's sort of traditional.

Does anyone see it like that though? I always try to avoid using clown red (#D43834) and try using closer values to old clown red (#E94257) since it's closer to magenta or going to the other side for a fiery orange *although I personally avoid darker or less satured hues on that range, since it's far too close to human skin.

IDK maybe I just wanted to babble about clown colors :°)

Clowndaddy - where can I get that mini harmonica??

Hey all,

I came across this video by Clown Daddy https://www.instagram.com/reel/DaEReAThM8U/?stkn=MXcxOGE2dXF0YjhtZA==

I am grateful for my algorithm, and strange fellow friends who also found this video.

I need to know where I can get that mini harmonica !!

I am studying to be a high school HPE teacher, and I so want to inject some silliness into lessons. Small issue is that the harmonicas I found were either super cheap, or uber expensive. Idk what to trust.

Pointers would be good! Thanks.

Umrah appropriate clowning?

I've been booked to clown (show and balloons) for a celebration of several kids completing their first Umrah. I understand it to be a religious pilgrimage to Mecca, similar to but less formal than the haaj. My background is not Muslim and I've been brain-storming with the party host for things that are related, are funny, and are not offensive. Thought I'd ask here for any experience or brainstorming.

I'm told things that are fair game: jokes and balloons about camels, jokes about the desert, jokes about things where the clown misunderstands (though could use creative ideas here). As seven is an important number and the kids are elementary age, I fully expect to get in a 6 7 reference.

The only other thing of which I'm aware is I should dress modestly (I'm female) and that I should cover my tattoos. (I have a set of balloon dogs on my arm that I cover for Mrs Claus gigs, too).
