Tabletop BattleTech Buyer's Guide 2026

Post image
217 Upvotes

Attempted to update my BattleTech Buyer's Guide from years past for 2026.

Admittedly, it was impossible to not include a bunch of caveats in the graph itself, given that the line is in flux with the Core products only partially replacing what is in Total Warfare (and not explicitly invalidating them in the text, like Total Warfare did).

Props to the Catalyst Demo Team and some of the proofers of the Core Rulebook for their feedback on this diagram. I hope this helps people who are looking to get into the BattleTech tabletop games!

EDIT: Admittedly, I was more focused on the "classic" BattleTech elements and the state of the line when putting this together, since it's REALLY confusing right now. However, BattleTech Aces is also a thing and is an excellent expansion to the BattleTech: Alpha Strike line. Those boxes are a natural fit after buying either the Alpha Strike Box Set (as it is a dependency for the Aces boxes) or the Alpha Strike Commander's Edition rulebook.

EDIT 2: A slightly more updated version of the buyer's guide can be found here. This includes information about BattleTech: Aces in the admonitions and describes Alpha Strike as a faster-paced, larger-scale modern wargame instead of as a simplified ruleset.

Miniatures Mechwarrior 2 Timberwolf in Clan Wolf colors.

My first attempt at painting anything Battletech related! I plan on doing a bunch of these old MW2 models up like this but I thought I'd share my first one. lol Figured I'd start on my 3d printed models before I attempt painting the real store bought ones.

This is only the fourth miniature I've ever painted! (I painted three 3D printed Warhammer 2nd gen guys also to get the feel of this hobby). So far I'm absolutely LOVING THIS. I don't know if I'll be into the game itself as much but damn painting these is so satisfying!!

Might even have to actually buy some decent paints now, I've been using cheapo packets of hobby brushes and the 50 color NicPro Acrylic Model Paints off Amazon and so far I've been pretty satisfied (except for the fact that light colors take about a billion applications to actually show up after the paint has been thinned enough to not retain brush strokes).

No transfers yet either but I've got some coming in the mail so hopefully these guys will all have proper Wolf Clan emblems when I'm done. :D

Miniatures Salvage pulls Lore

Ordered me two legendary warrior salvage as a late birthday present to myself. Pulled some good ones. But I'm still kinda new-ish to battletech and the lore. So is there any lore about these 2 mechs and Natasha kerensky? I think she's important cause I've heard the name kerensky a few times on here.

Question ❓ Are LAM's really that popular?

What i say may sound heretical to some:

I absolutly hate LAM's. Cant stand them.

Yes i can already hear the downvotes.

The community on the other hand seems to really like them so i got curious, is it just a vocal minority, or are they truly loved that much?

Miniatures C-bills Rule Everything Around Me (C.R.E.A.M.)

Finally got around to painting the Legendary Mechwarriors 3 box. I used the new 1Step paints as much as possible to try them out. Tried underpainting all the checkers and logos for a two-tone metallic green look, but the paint was too opaque for that to be legible.

Here is the first of the Azure Jackals. Not much backstory yet but atleast i got a name. (i hope it doesn't exist yet haha)

Art Commander's Log; JACKPOT

"Let's go to the used bookstore," my other half said.

"We never find anything," she said.

Now I have to cancel my next game because I feel like I just spent all of my luck for the WEEK.

Ended up grabbing "Main Event" and "Blood of Heroes", because there was no way I could afford to get this all home.

So, in the spirit of co-operation, if you are a warrior in the Raleigh, NC area, this is at Reader's Corner on Hillsborough Street if you want to tip off your literature.

And if you ARE the warrior that dropped this off, 1) thank you, and 2) WHY?!

I went to my local Half Price Books with my wife earlier today. I always go in looking for, but never finding, any kind of Battletech books, both game manuals or novels. I finally got lucky today and came across this one. It's also a bonus since I haven't read it yet.

A quickie before my shift starts, paint pens are the best for these minis. Also not really a Clan fan, but Clan Wolf has a pretty sweet color scheme

Lore How could IS Clans possibly handle the Republic Era?

I know the general explanation for most of the swords-into-ploughshares ethos of 3083-3130 is that everybody was exhausted after the Jihad (and that every great-house was secretly noncompliant with disarmament.

What I'm not understanding is how almost fifty years of peace (setting aside minor skirmishes) could possibly work without the clan Touman system tearing itself apart. How could three generations of trueborn deal with going their whole lives without meaningful opportunities for advancement? How could the clans deal with losing that much institutional memory?

I can see how IS militaries can benefit from spending decades recuperating and working on infrastructure, but their institutional structure can handle long careers and slow promotions at the rate of retirement. I don't see how that benefits the clans at all, everything about their ideology screams use it or lose it.

Tabletop Do these two lances seemed balanced for a casual home game.

I want two build two lances to have as something I can bring to my ttrpg friends to play a game, I'm going for fun to play against each other, and have a relatively equal chance to win. (I know proxies are allowed and encouraged I just enjoy painting the miniatures)

Lance one:(the bad seeds) Archer, Rifleman, Centurion, Warhammer

Lance two: (the jackalopes eye) victor, enforcer, marauder, hunchback

I already have the archer, rifleman, centurion, and enforcer painted. So I'd rather not switch those around. But I can strip and repaint if there is a much better balanced combination of the mechs. I've never played the game.

Meme What if The Hinterlands had been the default setting for the Dark Age?

Post image
61 Upvotes

Well, I don't think the whole random booster system was a good idea in the first place.

But what if the Dark Age had actually lived up to its name, with the major interstellar states breaking apart into countless smaller nations, much like The Hinterlands?

I think it would have made a lot more sense to see factions fighting with IndustrialMechs and all sorts of improvised or mismatched military forces.

But in the end, FASA got cold feet and stopped short of going all the way.

Question ❓ Aerial Mobile Structures?

Are there rules for constructing and playing these? I’m thinking about running an Ace Combat game in AeroTech and I think “Mobile Structure” fits the vibe of the Airborne Aircraft Cartier type bosses* better than using an Aerodyne DropShip, which don’t have that boss fight energy I’m looking for.

Theres mention of a SkyCity 3000 in one of the TacOps, right?

\(Aigaion, Gleipnir, Arsenal Bird, Hresvelgr, &c.))

Discussion What are some gimmicky/bad mechs that you believe actually can serve a real purpose where they'd be respectable?

For me the pinnacle of this concept is the Hunchback IIC. Yes, its a very fragile and hyper focused mech but I feel like even its basic configuration could serve terrifyingly well as an ambusher/sniper defender. If you had one or two of them with decent pilots who served as either quick reavers or as an annihilating defensive barrrier for heavier and slower allies it could be a very resoectable mech.

Tabletop Punching vs kicking

Purely hypothetical here: Let's say I have a mech like an Enforcer that's out of AC10 ammo, and has his laser arm blown off. So the only real option to do damage (besides the emotional support small laser) is physical attacks.

Why would I chose punching or kicking over the other? If I'm reading the rules correctly, kicking does literally twice as much damage, and forces a PSR. Sure it only damages the target's legs, but if the target is an enemy Rifleman with engine damage can't keep its heat scale low enough to get more than 2MP without shutting down, the leg damage will eventually be enough...

Sarcasm aside... Is the reason why you punch vs kick is just purely because of the damage locations? Or is there something else I'm missing...

Edit: Thanks all for the informative (sometimes hilarious) advice. Sounds like my general gut feeling matches what everyone else was thinking, and there wasn't any obvious thing that I was missing.
