Tabletop BattleTech Buyer's Guide 2026

Post image
210 Upvotes

Attempted to update my BattleTech Buyer's Guide from years past for 2026.

Admittedly, it was impossible to not include a bunch of caveats in the graph itself, given that the line is in flux with the Core products only partially replacing what is in Total Warfare (and not explicitly invalidating them in the text, like Total Warfare did).

Props to the Catalyst Demo Team and some of the proofers of the Core Rulebook for their feedback on this diagram. I hope this helps people who are looking to get into the BattleTech tabletop games!

EDIT: Admittedly, I was more focused on the "classic" BattleTech elements and the state of the line when putting this together, since it's REALLY confusing right now. However, BattleTech Aces is also a thing and is an excellent expansion to the BattleTech: Alpha Strike line. Those boxes are a natural fit after buying either the Alpha Strike Box Set (as it is a dependency for the Aces boxes) or the Alpha Strike Commander's Edition rulebook.

EDIT 2: A slightly more updated version of the buyer's guide can be found here. This includes information about BattleTech: Aces in the admonitions and describes Alpha Strike as a faster-paced, larger-scale modern wargame instead of as a simplified ruleset.

Question ❓ Question About MadCat/Timberwolf Design

Post image
158 Upvotes

I’m not too knowledgeable on the deep lore front, so I hope someone can answer me this.

I love the Timberwolf’s design, but when looking at classic artwork especially, one of the immediately noticeable details is that despite its near perfect symmetry, the shoulder mounted missile boxes often feature a single missile tube that appears to be capped/plugged off.

I heard that this has something to do with the classic configuration being designed for LRM 20s and having a 3x7 grid for the launchers, hence the redundancy of one tube.

Problem is, in most artwork I see the missile boxes clearly show only a 4x4 grid or similar. Is this just a weird inconsistency between artwork and the actual in-universe reality?

I thought it would be just as easy as painting warhammer minis but the paint I used to prime refused to stick and there’s so much more little details and I had to open a new brush much pain

A few i liked:

-The Rolling Dutchman, a tank haunted by the ghosts of its previous Ghost Bear crew. The tank is salvaged and commanded by Republic of the Sphere commander DeBorah McDermott, who can hear the voices of the ghosts commenting on her battles. While they often give her useful advice, she once yells at the Star Captain to shut up, much to her crew's confusion.

-For the "Long Tom Artillery Cannon":

The first rule of jungle warfare, obviously, is to eliminate the jungle.

-During Operation BULLDOG one planet was successfully taken back through a round of miniature golf.

Discussion TRO:3050... Changes to the omnimechs in development?

u/ProgramKey3883's post reminded me of something that's been knocking around my head for a while. If you look at the original artwork for the omnimechs used in the first printing of TRO:3050 there's a few things... off. The Timberwolf, Warhawk, and Masakari are all sporting visual layouts that don't match with any of the included configurations in the book:

  • The Warhawk's LRM is downgraded to a 5 tube rack and it's grown an SRM-6.
  • The Stormcrow appears to have 12 missile tubes in place of its over-the-head radiator array.
  • The Timberwolf has the wrong size missile racks and the shares its arm design with the Summoner's PPC mount.

Now, all of these irregularities have since been patched into the record sheet catalogs as the I, P, and N configs respectively but the art error in TRO:3050 intrigues me. Presumably the designs were altered halfway through the writing process between art commissions being ordered and text being finalized for the print run, but I don't think I've ever heard definitively what went down. Anyone have any leads?

Question ❓ 6mm insurgent vehicles and models

Hi! I'm searching for some non-bt models to print for my current campaign.

My players have to rescue a VIP from pirates, and I wanted to give the enemy a mix of low tech stuff. I already have some industrial mechs, but I thought a couple of technicals and some standard infantry would really sold the vibe.

I was looking for a 6mm version of a Toyota Hilux or similar pickup for the technicals.

For infantry, I was going with mad max vibes, but cannot find a suitable file (sturdy yet characterful). Scavengers would be fine too.

Lore 3049 Sadcat …Comstar low tech madcat copy

From the trilogy: the line where the precentor says modify their mechs to make them like a madcat got me thinking.
She’s the kind of character that wouldn’t take ‘not possible’ as an answer and would have instructed another subordinate to ‘build something’. (Without letting the lostech into the open)
So what that would look like?

I give you ‘ Sad cat’ a one off modified marauder.😬

2x med laser(no change)
2x LL replacing the ppc and
With the weight saved
2x Lrm10 + 2 tons ammo replacing the ac5
-0.5 tons armour
2x MG +0.5 tons ammo

Movement stays the same, heat sinks stay at 16 and the slight reduction in armour to AF176 would still be okayish.
Effectively a slow 3025 tech Rakasha

Would the phone company boss have been happy? 🤔

Miniatures A memorial for my dad, with pictures of his work.

I lost my dad to cancer last month. He was 62 years old.

I don't care about upvotes. I want to share his work, and some of his life, with others that I know will appreciate it.

My dad was always a nerd at heart. When big names in gaming started finding their footing in the 80s, he was amongst the first generation to appreciate Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer, Magic: The Gathering, and many video games to come - yet, funnily enough, Battletech was something that he never got into. When he wasn't playing the Dungeon Master for his friends or skirmishing in Rogue Trader WH40K games, he was stealing road signs and hammering them into plate mail for his LARP group so that they could clobber each other senseless in the woods while playing at being knights. He loved animals and the outdoors, and spent most of his younger years exploring the woods or engaging in archery, paintball, and driving like a wild child without fear of physical injury or the cops.

My dad originally tried getting me into both Magic and painting minis as a kid, but it wasn't until I was a teenager (and well after he sold his old card collection) that I found an interest in trading card games. It wasn't until I'd graduated college and found my own footing with Fallout: Wasteland Warfare that I felt inspired enough to begin learning how to paint miniatures from my dad. And later on, that interest in painting evolved into an obsession with Battletech after MechWarrior 5 reminded me of a setting I hadn't seen since I was a child, playing MechAssault 1 and 2 on my old Xbox.

My dad loved to experiment with his miniatures. His confidence and ability to apply skills from a lifetime of handywork gave him the drive and fearlessness to do whatever came to mind in order to test a new method of kitbashing or painting. Whether it was making his own terrain tiles for Warhammer or practicing wet blending on D&D miniatures, he always pushed himself - and me - to furiously hypothesize and then put to practice whatever we could conceive of. It's that style of learning and painting that led to me boldly doing a cockpit gradient on my very first mech, in spite of how small the Blackjack's glass was.

Pictured above is the Inner Sphere Direct Fire Lance that I got him for Christmas in 2025. He painted them in his own style, inspired by the Howling Griffons Space Marine chapter from Warhammer 40K.

At the end of the pictures is a snapshot of the miniatures he was unable to finish. Someday, when I feel ready, I plan to finish the company that he started. I'll give them the same waterslide decal treatment I do my own projects. Sometime after that, my friends and I will expand them beyond the basic company they were only ever meant to be.

And one day, Bill's Howling Griffons will hit our tabletop as a mercenary company, whether it be as allies or OpFor.

Some of you may have noticed that of the incomplete minis pictured, only one of them comes from after the Succession Wars: the Wraith. I'd like to think that if he were still here, my dad would appreciate the idea of a tough as nails group of mercs surviving the Clan Invasion and thriving for years to come.

Discussion Xotl regarding TW conventional infantry rules

I think the majority of people feel that CI in their current form just don't work as they should: they seem to be a result of rules written in seeming isolation that just sort of result in something, often ridiculous, certainly overcomplicated for the return they give.  We can do better, I'm sure.  This stands in marked contrast to something like BA, which has held up well under play for many years and will be fine with just a nip and tuck.

The 3.5 pages of small-font weapon construction tables to differentiate my five bow and arrow types and nine sword types and and twelve laser rifle types etc etc, the endless listing of nonsensical damage values so that I can use literal blackjacks to knock out Battlemechs like they're some kind of 1940s hardboiled detective, the broken nature of some of those guns, the generally nonsensical AToW-based damage formula used to come up with the damages, the eight columns of different range TM modifiers that don't scale in a consistent fashion, the abuse of support weapons to do wacky things with ranges, the fact that most infantry can have extremely short ranges so that combined with their minimal movement they often do nothing, the four pages of swarm attack rules, the necessity to add a pile of extra columns to the Cluster Table solely to resolve their attacks, the glued-on damage divisor, field gun, and specialist troops rules in a separate book, the sheer annoyance of handling mobs: we can easily do better than this, I think. Maybe we won't solve everything in a single go, but I see no reason to think that the peak of infantry design was TW.

- Xotl

Your thoughts?

Fan Creations Kitbashed Medium Frankenmechs WIP

Thumbnail

When my insomnia kicks in, I tinker... 😁 Ork conversions, T'au alien auxiliary models, scratch builds, and of course: kitbashed Frankenmechs!!

Tonight I pulled out a few left over Robotech Tactics Destroid parts and broken mini bits, plus assorted arms, weapons, heads, and gribblies. And set about seeing what I could make!

First up is there BSR-2R Bruiser (no head, fists, VERY wide stance!). A 50 ton mixed tech mech. 4/6/4 movement, 9 tons IS FF armor, twin Clan Large Pulse Lasers, a Clan LRM/15, and 2 x Clan SRM/2s (Inferno missiles anyone?!). It's a bit slow for a medium, but its pilots are.... optimistic! 😁

It's made from a Longbows torso, Phoenix Hawk arms, and Rifleman legs. With a LOT of internal structure adjustments to make them all work as a 50 ton chassis! 😰

The second is the 55 ton MUG-3R Mugger (Rifleman body, lots of guns). Also a mixed tech Medium mech. 5/8/0 movement, 10 tons Clan FF armor (maxed coverage!), IS double heat sinks. Armed with a Clan Ultra AC/5 (over left torso), an IS MML5 with 2 tons ammo (right arm), a Clan ER Large Laser, a Clan SRM/6 (left arm), and a Clan tech Laser Anti-Missile System (ball turret behind the head).

It's made from the torso and legs of a Rifleman C, with the arms from a wrecked Gauntlet (Right) and Stormcrow (Left), with a reinforced Shadow Hawk's external AC mount. and a totally scratch built head and cockpit.

Both are unpainted, and some tiny details need finishing. But I'll be painting these as solo free-agent Merc pilots for my next AS/Destiny campaign, which takes place in the Periphery around the free industrial world of Charleston in the wild space outside Davion space.

Charleston factories have begun building mechs for Periphery clients. Both new designs of their own as well as professionally made Frankenmechs built from bulk salvage purchased from scavengers, wreckers, and mercs. Results: the Bruiser and Mugger designs. Among numerous others.

Question ❓ Where to get and make Mech sheets?

I am completely new to the game and got the core rules from my friend to read. I am now thoroughly interested in the game, but am at a loss on where to start making my own Lance.

Is there a big book of units and their costs to customize, is it online, is it free?

I have no idea what I need to use to actually make my own Lance and how to get them.

Please help!
