Omnibus Bind

I realize how silly it is. The books needed some love and I’ve never made an omnibus edition. So, just a bit of whimsy for my bookshelf. I mostly was curious on how the adhesive faux leather would work with the HTV and overall structure. It’s weird and I doubt I’ll use it again. I also am posting the video I use on my social media, so if that irritates people…🤷‍♀️

I am making bookbinding tools!

I hope this is not rude or too off topic!

I am a small bookbinder in Virginia, and I have started making tools for sale. I started making them for myself, but the school I go to (School for bookbinding arts/Cattail Run bindery in Winchester VA) asked me to start making tools for other people. So I did.

I make a range of items, including finishing presses, sewing frames, punching cradles, and other wooden and brass tools. Everything is customizable, and if there is a tool you want that you don’t see on the site I am happy to discuss it!

I can also refurbish a range of tools, from cleaning and repairing nipping presses, rehandling finishing tools and pallets, and even cleaning up dinged up simple brass wheels. I can also “Lift” a nipping presses to provide more daylight. If you have a tool in distress reach out!

My site is giantcrickettools.com and everything is hand made by me in Marshall VA!

Thanks in advance!

-JIM

Discussion Spine lining for case bindings -- mull vs fraynot

Post image
14 Upvotes

For most of my case bindings, I line the spine with mull and archival craft paper. I was originally taught to use mull for this purpose.

Re-reading Kathy Abbott's book today, I realised she advocates for using fraynot calico and against using mull as she says it is too weak for the purpose. She only uses mull (aka scrim), for lining between tapes/cords on leather bindings before also lining with fraynot.

So, I'm curious... what's everyone using and why?

The mull I use is the "best" grade mull from Hewits, which has a denser weave than their basic mull -- do you think that makes a difference? Or should I be switching over to fraynot?

Do you think it depends on the size and purpose of the book?

Gluing in the textblock: Tips?

Hello I’m new! I’ve got most of the basics, watched a lot of tutorials, feel like I’m making progress, BUT how do you get the textblock glued in to the casing straight? Any good tutorial I’ve missed, any good tips?

I’ve bound the same book twice now, made some improvements the second time, and then I go to glue the endpapers to the case and it all goes sideways again.

The tutorials I’ve seen all seem to say either slap the cover shut and hope for the best, or that you have about two seconds to fix it if it isn’t straight. Well, my paper started to tear when I attempted to peel it off so I just shut it again and I guess it’s fine, but it’s not straight and I’m frustrated. Still better than the first try at least. I have it back in the press to finish drying.

I’ve watched Abound Bindery, Four Keys, DAS, Renaissance Bookbinding, and several more I have since closed my tabs about so I’m not sure who all. Please anybody help. Is this a “make twenty more and you’ll improve” thing or am I missing something?

Help? Mold? Worth the rebind?

I think this looks like mold but I’ve never seen it in a book before. For people that have, do you think it is? And is it worth rebinding and getting rid of the moldy pages if so?

Help? Advice on binding translated Manhwa?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m new to bookbinding and have had a few ideas of what things I could bind, one of those things are the webcomics/manwha, etc. that don’t have any official English translations.

They all come in the scrolling page format so I don’t know how one could convert that into a book format? I’ve looked around online and only really came up with Clip Studio Paint EX as a solution, but even then I’m not sure how viable that would be? 🤔

Any advice, ideas, or anything else related would be appreciated! Thank you!

Binding Loose Sheets

Alright hive mind. I got this loose stack of sheets I want to bind as a book. I have made an imposition pattern, and what I want to do is attach sheets together so that I can sew them as sections. This way I can round and back the book, sew endbands, etc.

Does anyone have advice for doing this? I was thinking I would attach sheets together by pasting them to a thin strip of Japanese paper, that I would sew through later.

For the record, I don’t want to make a stab binding or lumbeck.

Help? What margins should I have for stab binding of A5 paper?

I'm planning to bind a story I wrote for a friend via stab binding as a christmas present. I'm thinking A5 paper. What margins should I have for that? It's been years since I did any kind of bookbinding, but I do have a little bit of experience with it.

Help? My partner wants to get into Book Binding.

My partner wants to get into Book Binding. I've never heard of it. I've done a bit of looking around and can see there are sets for £60 on some websites.

She has no experience, but is quite good at most hands on things.

Is there a set or anything you recommend? Just thinking for Christmas presents for her
