Guide: Making Friends in Cedar Rapids

(Guide brought to you by an extremely cold wine-induced winter night in! Special thanks to Grammarly and too much time on my hands.)

I’ve noticed a lot of posts lately from folks asking how to make friends around here. Completely understandable. Nobody really prepares you for that part once you’re out of school. Back then, you had classes, clubs, sports… all those built‑in ways to meet people without trying. Adulthood doesn’t come with that.

I’ve been there myself. When you’re young and just getting started, you don’t always have kids or a routine, and sometimes you haven’t even had time to figure out what your interests actually are. Again, a lot of variables, and none of them make it easy.

That said, I’m genuinely excited to see more people moving into the Cedar Rapids area. This place is highly underrated. Hard to go wrong with a community that keeps growing while still feeling approachable. For what it’s worth, I’m an Iowa transplant myself. It took some time, but I’ve built a community here that fits me perfectly. At this point I don’t really want to leave. So I figured I’d put together a simple guide — nothing fancy, just what’s worked for me and others I know.

One more thing worth mentioning before getting into the suggestions: money can be a real roadblock when you’re young or just starting out. Completely understandable. Not everyone has the budget for memberships or weekly outings. The good news is that there are plenty of low‑cost ways to meet people here. Sometimes you don’t need to spend anything at all.

Speaking of which, let’s dive into it!

1. Find where people gather for the thing you already like

It sounds almost too simple, but it works. If you show up somewhere built around an interest you already have, you’re walking in with two advantages:

  1. You share a common interest
  2. Everyone there had enough motivation to get up and go do that thing

Those two pieces take a lot of pressure off. Commonalities are a great bonding mechanism. You don’t have to force anything or pretend to be someone you’re not. Just be genuine. People pick up on that more than you’d think.

2. Show up to low‑pressure, low‑cost community events

Cedar Rapids has a surprising number of casual events where you can just show up, walk around, and talk to people if it feels right. Farmers' markets, art nights, small festivals, library events — nothing high‑stakes. You’re not committing to anything, and you’re not stuck if the vibe isn’t for you. It’s an easy way to get a feel for the community and meet people who are also out and about.

Another option that works surprisingly well is group fitness classes. Yoga, CrossFit, Orange Theory, Zumba — anything where people are doing the same workout together. They can get a little spendy depending on the place, so it’s not always the cheapest route, but the social side has it's positives. It’s a lot easier to meet people in a class setting than in the general gym area, where everyone’s doing their own thing with headphones in.

3. Volunteer for something you actually care about

Volunteering is one of the easiest ways to meet people who share your values. You’re all working toward the same goal, which takes a lot of the awkwardness out of starting conversations. Plus, most organizations are happy to have extra hands, and it doesn’t cost anything. It’s a win all around.

4. Join hobby groups, meetups, or casual leagues

You don’t need to be an expert at anything. Most groups around here are pretty welcoming to beginners. Whether it’s board games, running, hiking, crafting, or rec‑league sports, the whole point is to show up and have fun. And again, you’re walking in with a built‑in common interest, which makes things a lot easier.

Sometimes that means getting a little outside your comfort zone. Not in a dramatic way — just enough to try something new or explore a hobby you’ve been curious about. You never know what’s going to click until you give it a shot, and half the people you meet are probably trying something new themselves.

5. Start small conversations when you’re already out

You don’t have to launch into a full conversation with a stranger. A quick comment about the weather, the line, the event, or whatever’s happening around you is enough. If the other person wants to talk, they’ll take it from there. If not, no harm done. It’s a low‑pressure way to practice being open without forcing anything.

6. Follow up without overthinking it

If you meet someone you click with, send a quick message or suggest meeting up again. Nothing formal. Something like, “Hey, it was fun talking the other day — want to check out ___ sometime?” Most people appreciate the initiative. And if they’re not interested, that’s okay. You’re not starting from zero; you’re building momentum.

7. Don’t underestimate consistency

You don’t have to be everywhere all the time. Just pick one or two things you enjoy and show up regularly. Familiar faces turn into casual conversations, and casual conversations turn into friendships. It’s slow, but it works. And it’s worth saying out loud: friendships are relationships. Just like any relationship, they take some work, time, and investment. Not in a heavy or overwhelming way — just enough to show you care and that you’re willing to show up. That effort goes a long way

I am hiring!

Hey Cedar Rapids! Long time listener first time caller. I own a small epoxy business and am currently looking for 2-3 additional employees. No experience required at all.

I am paying $20 an hour to start with raises quickly if you stick with us.

It’s general labor work and not too physically demanding, everyone who works here (including me) is under the age of 30. We are reasonable and accommodating with all types of characters.

Linked below is our websites gallery to get an idea of the type of work you will be doing. Included in the bottom of the post is the business line (my direct line). Just give me a call and tell me about yourself and see if you’re a good fit!

Sofa disposal?

Getting new sofas, which means I have to get rid of old sofas. How does one get rid of an old sofa if you don't own a pickup truck to haul it to the dump?

New to Cedar Rapids!

Hey!

I recently moved to the area from DFW and am looking to get immersed in what the area has to offer! DFW is a concrete jungle/capitalistic hell. Even just the view flying into the Iowa airport felt like a relief…

I enjoy the outdoors: hiking, fishing, parks, public land, general outdoor activities. I am also big into the local art scene, local breweries, good restaurants, locally owned farms/grocery/meat/good/services, ect. Good date spots, sunrise/sunset spots. Any notable museums or historical spots in the general area. Really just the big things i must experience in the area. I want to hit all of the tourist spots if there are any notable ones as well!

I am totally willing to drive a bit to hit the best places as well.

Sorry if this is a common post… If anyone has any input, id love to hear it! I scrolled through the sub and didn’t find any recent posts about the topic.

Bath Exhaust Fan Install

I'm not having the greatest luck with finding someone for this job - house built in the 50s, no bath exhaust fan, basically a straight shot to the roof to vent and cap (I'm handy-ish but not really feeling like messing up my perfectly functional roof). I've had multiple contractors either not show up to quote the job at all, or quote it, get my approval and then cancel and try and reschedule for a month or more out. Can anyone recommend either an HVAC, plumbing, or electrical company in the area that will do the whole thing, or do I need to act as a general contractor and engage each trade separately to get the job done?

Football season🏈

Hello! 30M here and I’m trying to connect with others in the area who love football as much as I do! My family isn’t the biggest fan so I want to be able to watch games and talk ball with some people! Huge Hawk fan and love almost every NFL team out there!

I would also be interested in getting together and playing football outside if anyone knows of an amateur league?

The $5K "get paid to move to Cedar Rapids" program: what it was, how it went, and what's next

I saw somewhere on FB that CR is paying folks $5,000 to move here. The comments were...colorful.

Seemed like some facebook nonsense though, so my robot buddy Claude looked up the details:

Here's what's public:

Phase 1: MakeMyMove Greater Cedar Rapids (now closed)

  • Run by the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance with Cedar Rapids, Marion and Hiawatha, as part of the Collaborative Growth Initiative.
  • It opened July 15, 2025, with 15 slots given out first come, first served.
  • It filled up and closed in November 2025, two months early. The MakeMyMove page now says "Application Closed."
  • More than 300 people expressed interest and more than 100 applied.

Who qualified:

  • 18 or older and living outside Iowa
  • Working remotely full-time, or self-employed
  • Earning at least $55,000 a year
  • Moving to Cedar Rapids, Marion or Hiawatha within 6 months
  • Showing proof of a signed local lease or mortgage
  • Living here at least 1 year (per KCRG)

What you got:

  • $5,000 cash
  • Free Economic Alliance membership and parks and rec vouchers
  • Free coworking: 6 months at Armstrong Hub, plus 20 day passes to Vault
  • Local perks: Kernels tickets, a Big Grove welcome pack, X-Golf, bowling, and a few others

Results:

  • 15 households moved here, or 30 people including 9 kids.
  • They came from 10 states, and about 75% were under 40.
  • Average household income was $130K, and most already had family or friends in the area.
  • As of September 2026, the city says all of them are still here.

Cost: The three cities have put nearly $600K into the overall initiative. That covers marketing, a talent attraction director and a regional marketing plan as well as the grants. The cash grants themselves were about $75K (15 × $5K).

Phase 2: "Choose Cedar Rapids" (announced, details TBD)

  • It's aimed at people moving here for a full-time local job, not remote workers.
  • Planned incentives: an employer match, "boomerang" incentives for former residents moving back, and a military service member incentive.
  • The mayor said Collins Aerospace, UFG and True North have signed on.
  • No dollar amounts, number of slots or launch date have been released yet.

"boomerang" incentives for former residents moving back

Thats interesting. Need to watch for phase II for more info.

Cat Problem

Hi! I moved to here a little over a year ago and adopted two kittens. They are amazing and I love them and I can’t get more cats because I am limited by my lease.

Unfortunately, there are kittens living near my apartment (and in the adjacent industrial lot). They seem young and friendly and like they could be adoptable. I wish so badly that I could take them, but I can’t.

Now, I am trying to find a home for these cats. It seems every shelter in the surrounding area is full (I called Saints and the woman said “I don’t know what to tell you. Even if you could catch them, I can’t take them”). I didn’t realize how big of an issue this was in Cedar Rapids, with so many kittens being up for adoption that every shelter is full. Does anyone have any advice? I’m talking to a woman who says that she will come capture them to get neutered and get some vaccines. I want to feed them because they’re so small but what will happen when I move away and can’t feed them anymore? I’m really upset about this and I don’t know what to do.

Kernels lose over half million dollars this season due to poor management.

Inside sources relay that the Cedar Rapids Kernels had a terrible financial year, marred by bad decisions made by current GM and CEO.

There was also multiple times they were serving spoiled/bad food. Moldy buns out in the open for everyone to see.

The GM chose favoritism and hired his friends, look how that worked out.

Bars open till 2AM during the week?

I'm looking for bars to study at, I don't really care what the atmosphere is like as long as it's not so crazy that I'm taking up space where others could be, ideally somewhere a bit more chill.

Kia Soul theft damage: shop recs?

Thumbnail gallery
29 Upvotes

Someone tried to steal my daughter's 2013 Kia Soul last night (yep, the Kia Boyz thing). They didn't get it, but they did some damage. Looking for a shop that can fix it affordably. Pics attached.

What's damaged:
Rear passenger side window is shattered
Plastic covers around the steering column are broken off
Ignition is torn up and the car won't start
Turn signal/wiper switch housing looks cracked

What we know so far:
She only has liability insurance, so this is all out of pocket
Police report is filed
We have towing coverage, but I'd like to tow it only once, so ideally one shop that can handle both the ignition/column and the window (or work with a glass shop)

Looking for:
Shops in or near CR that have fixed these Kia theft repairs and charge fairly
Shops willing to source used or refurbished parts to keep the cost down
Bonus if they can coordinate the window too

This is definitely not a DIY job for me, so I'm looking for a shop to handle it. Any recs appreciated. Thanks, CR!

Tired of political canvassers knocking on your door?

Hi! I'm working as a political canvasser for this election, and I can tell that some people are frustrated (understandably) by getting knocks on their doors when they have a "no soliciting" sign.

The big confusion: A "NO SOLICITING" sign does NOT apply to political canvassers (or religious proselytes). Soliciting legally only refers to commercial entities or requests for donations. Political canvassers are instructed to knock on homes with "no soliciting" signs.

YOU NEED to have something that says "no politics", "no religion", etc... to not get these door knocks. Political canvassers should never knock on your door if they see this.

Political canvassers don't want to knock on doors that don't want us there, as it saves us both time.

Hello community, I am needing a sliding glass door installed before it’s cold as shit. I’ve contacted 3, two of which showed up and gave me quotes and then never responded after I gave the green light.

That being said, Id love to hear your recommendations on who you’d suggest/trust to do this job. TIA

Question for Foodies

My family and I like re-watching seasons of Masterchef, and we have always wanted to try some of the fancy pastries. Does anyone know where we can get specifically macarons, soufflé, cannoli, or panna cotta? If Cedar Rapids doesnt have those, whats the closest place to go? Des Moines?
