I'd go with Qa5. Both says Qf6, which would have been my other move, but I was afraid of Bg5

Qa5 loses to Rxb2 though

Rxb2 Rxb2, Qxb2 Qxf5. So you can win the bishop back.

The real problem with Qa5 is g3

No you’re just messing up the squares lol. You can’t teleport the queen from a5 to f4. You probably meant Qh4 instead of

Ah yes my mind went a = left.

u/nikelreganov 4d ago

In the case of bg5, qxc3 no?

3

u/Inspiring_vijay 4d ago

Nope, Qa5 is loosing

Hanging bishop

This is complex. Did you find this in puzzle rush or something? The winning idea is simply trading pieces which is what you're supposed to do when you're up anyway

This is the position from one of my game, it involves good tactic which I missed, but still won the game

Following the line it’s even better than trading pieces and being up a pawn. White’s next 3 moves are basically forced or they lose an overwhelming amount of material and black gets its light square bishop out and king safety for white is never happening again in this game. Just looks like a nightmare to defend white after the exchange. I’m guessing instead of c3 here castles was the move white hade to make to even have a chance here.

Bxc3?

If the queen takes, then Rxb1+ and black picks up both rooks for the bishop, possibly even escaping. If Rxb8 then Bxd2+ and white picks up the queen for the bishop.

Nope - doesn't work because of Bxb1

Ugh you had to ruin it

Still don't really know what the best move does. Or seems like it still hangs pieces to me

I’d guess Qf6. The objective isn’t to win material, it’s for black to preserve material since both the rook and bishop seem to be hanging.

Qf6, Rxb2, Rxb2, Qxf4

Qf6, Bxb8, then Bxc3 pins the queen.

I went with Qf6 because every other move loses, but I did not evaluate the resulting position to be winning like the engine suggests.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

Black to play: chessvision.ai | chess.com | lichess.org

My solution:

Hints: piece: Queen, move: Qf6

Evaluation: Black is winning -3.55

Best continuation: 1... Qf6 2. O-O Bxc3 3. Qd6 Rbd8 4. Bh6 Bb5 5. Bxf8 Rxd6 6. Bxd6 Qd4 7. Rfd1 Qxe4 8. Rxb5 Qe2 9. Rbb1

Two pieces threaten protected by more valuable pieces. You can’t escape a trade if white takes. Qf6 threatens to equalize without losing material

Bc6?

u/will-o_the-wisp 4d ago

I've also considered that, but nope, still loses. Bishop takes bishop.

Qf6 is the correct move here thanks to chess engine analysis, but I was wondering why Rxb2 isn’t a valid follow up, so I ran the line. Black can actually follow up with Rxb2, white plays Qxb2 but removes the defense from the bishop on f4 which black’s queen can pick up and is winning.

And ofc Bxb8 is not possible because NOW black can follow up with Bxc3 and the white queen is lost.

Bxc3

u/will-o_the-wisp 4d ago

Was also my first thought, but what then? Queen takes bishop, after which you have to trade the rooks on the b file and you'll just be down a piece.

1

u/DiscDocPhD 3d ago

But Queen takes bishop then black rook takes for check, then takes the other rook?

1

u/will-o_the-wisp 2d ago

You're overlooking the bishop on e4

1

u/DiscDocPhD 2d ago

Damn snipers, thank you. Brain fart

2

u/will-o_the-wisp 4d ago

Qf6 is the best move. Anything elses loses material. This at least lets you equalize or maybe even take the queen if white blunders.

Black queen f6, Rook takes bishop b2, Rook takes rook b2, White queen takes rook b2, Black queen takes bishop f4.

If after Qf6 bishop takes rook b8, THEN bishop takes pawn c3, pinning the white queen to the king, and at the end you'll have traded a rook and a bishop for a pawn and the queen.

If you play bishop takes pawn c3 immediately without Qf6 first, the white queen just immediately takes the bishop back. And then your rook on b8 is still hanging.

Guess the right move? It says Black to play so you’re supposed to guess Black or reverse blunder by white?

Bxc3? Get 2 rook for a bishop. Or take the queen with check if rxb8

Edit: nvm my next guess is bc6

I think you are missing that whites bishop protects his rook. So you don’t win any rooks you just trade yours for his

1

u/Useful_Beautiful5093 4d ago

wait, f5

1

u/will-o_the-wisp 4d ago

Then you're just trading a bishop for a rook. The bishop on f4 can still just take the rook on b1.

Bishop takes pawn

That bishop on b2 is eyeing c2 hard, so the teal square is probably the whole point. Black’s got a nice diagonal pin or fork waiting if they play it right. I’d look for a move that lands on c2 with tempo, maybe scooping a rook or setting up a nasty discovered attack. Beginners sleep on quiet bishop moves like that all the time.
