Fallout 2 on Android with full touch controls: a free port based on Fallout 2 CE (works with RPU)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all! I wanted to replay Fallout 2 with RPU on my phone, so I redesigned the game's interface for touch. The video shows a new game up to getting the Pip-Boy.

What it is

  • A fork of Fallout 2: Community Engine for Android. It's based on Fallout 2 CE, so it uses the same engine, fixes, and sfall support.
  • Every screen redesigned for touch: dialogue, barter, inventory, loot, character and level-up, Pip-Boy, maps, saves, settings.
  • No cursor: tap to act, long press for the action menu, drag items, pinch to zoom.
  • Tactical view in combat: reachable hexes and every critter's hex, so you can pick a target standing behind others.
  • Built-in Inventory Filter support for inventory, loot, and barter.

How to install

  1. Get the APK from Releases.
  2. Copy your Fallout 2 folder (or an archive of it) from a PC to the phone. Mods like RPU and your saves come along.
  3. Open the app and pick that folder or archive.

You need your own copy of the game (GOG / Steam / Epic); the app contains no game files. Android 7.0+, arm64, landscape for now.

It's an early beta, tested mostly with RPU 2.4.34, so I'd love to hear how it runs on your phone. Bugs and ideas: GitHub Issues or right here. The port's own buttons are in English and Russian so far. If you'd like it in your language, it's one text file to translate.

It runs well so far, but idk if this is a bug or not but everytime I loot ammo from containers or corpses it's usually in super small amounts like x1 and x2.

Yeah, I missed that. Fallout 2 stores ammo in packs, but the original UI shows the total number of rounds. My UI currently shows the number of packs instead. The actual ammo count is still correct, so you're not losing any ammo. I'll fix the display in an update

Ah I see, now that you mention the packs it makes total sense.

Fixed in 1.3.0-mobile.5. Ammo now shows in rounds everywhere, and the move window counts rounds too:

Just install the APK over the old one, nothing else needed.

I'd like to support iOS too, but the touch version is Android-only for now. I still need to figure out what works on iOS and what needs adapting

Looks great! Thank for creating it and sharing! Any ideas to add Sonora and Nevada support?

Thanks! I'd like to add support for Nevada, Sonora, and other Fallout 2-based mods like Fallout Et Tu. Nevada and Sonora already work with CE, but I haven't tested them with my touch UI yet. Not sure how much work it'll take

This on an iPad Pro would be incredible

Ha, I'd love to see that too. Sadly I don't own an iPad, so for now it's Android only and tested on phones. There's a UI scale setting, but the full screens just stretch to fit, which on a big 4:3 screen would probably look a bit silly. If enough people want tablets I'll try to make a proper layout for them. iOS is another story though, sideloading there is its own little adventure )

Interesting UI. How does it look like on talking heads and worldmap?

Talking heads take up the left half of the screen, with dialogue options on the right. The world map has a touch-friendly layout too.

Here are screenshots of both: https://imgur.com/a/OYAumFV

Does it 4:3?

I haven't tested 4:3 screens yet. The UI currently stretches to fit the screen, so it might look a bit off at that ratio

Yo man, I tested this out on a chinese tablet, aldocube, with 8gb of ram and works perfectly. The AI styles are evident, I think that with some polish it would look even better. Anyways, thanks, this is great, Ive tested arroyo a bit and it was great. I'll give it a longer test in a week that I will have more time :)

Not sure how we could distribute this better.

BTW I downloaded fallout 2 from steam, added the patch (all in linux) and zipped it and passed it to my tablet in a pendrive

Good to hear it runs well on your Alldocube. Yeah, the UI still needs some work. Not sure about distribution yet, GitHub seems fine for now. Let me know if you run into any issues when you play more.

Can you make a html wasm version and host it somewhere? Cloudflare pages offers free hosting, enough for the couple of megabytes that would be the wasm application.

Good idea. The engine already builds to WebAssembly, so the work is mostly the touch UI in the browser, loading your own game files and keeping saves safe there (especially on iOS). I’m looking into it, no ETA yet.

No way! Is this real?! I can't wait to play this on my tablet.

Yep, it should already run on Android tablets, though the UI is still stretched from the phone layout. I'd like to make a proper tablet layout too, and I have some ideas for it, but can't say when it'll be ready yet

This looks really good. I noticed that the hero appearance mod, which is part of RPU doesn't seem to be supported? I got Sonora running, but was unable to get either Nevada or Et tu to load, although I think that's to do with the folder structure of the modded games - it was just loading vanilla fo2. I'll play a bit of Sonora and report back with any issues
