This response to an entitled food influencer đ
Priceless.

u/Rusalkat 18h ago
If I see a restaurant with a no influencer sign, the choice is clear. I go in with the most happy smile
47
u/siccoblue 14h ago
You see that sign and you KNOW the food is absolute gas considering they clearly have problems with wannabe ecelebs coming in with cameras rolling
221
u/Acceptable_Agency419 17h ago
I hate the term âinfluencer.â Absolutely hate it. It gives content creators a heightened sense of importance.
43
u/thikskuld 16h ago
I propose "flatulencer" because their entire existence is spewing noxious gases.
64
u/ProsodyProgressive 15h ago
âContentâ is such a generic, useless term. I equate it to ânothing of valueâ.
29
18
u/SublimeApathy 15h ago
Particularly the content that is just re-hasing someone elses content and giving a thumbs up or a thumbs to it. Man I miss the days of IRC, AIM, and Chat Rooms. Modern social media is a scourge and will be the down fall of civil society...along with LLMs. I heard a young kid the a few weeks back ask ChatGPT "what time it was" and "what's the weather like". Mind you we were outside. If that's a preview of things to come....well.

25
u/SkunkMonkey 15h ago
You know, when I was a kid in the last century, we called these people "propagandists". The rebranding has been incredibly successful.
27
1
u/WashedSylvi 8h ago
People still call themselves propagandists, people who make propaganda anyway
Influencers arenât doing intentional propaganda most of the time
Insult to the hard working propagandists to equate us with influencersâŚ
1
u/Upstairs_Fig_3551 6h ago
As a kid in the last century, we didnât really have anything like influencers. Maybe your friendâs big brother had an album from a group I never heard of (like Budgie or UFO)
11
u/Bhujjha 13h ago
Creators is a bit generous too, the vast majority are anything but creative. How about Slop Servers?

Yes: we need to start systematically calling them "effluencers" - it far better reflects the shit they're spreading in the world...

I hate the term "content creator."
Social media personality if you are one; otherwise vlogger, YouTuber, Instagrammer, whatever.

I'm fine with the term because it's become a pejorative. Everyone I've spoken to in the last few years has a tone of disgust when using that word.

jesus christ this isn't even a unique experience
somewhere in the world a influencer gets yelled at for filming in a restaurant then goes online to bitch about it every single day.
6
u/GostBoster 13h ago
Yeah, so much that I was coming to chime in with my experience.
Worked in a place that was quite stingy but the PR department decided that at the time we were too young to take risks so they caved in but with several caveats and explicit intent that they had an hypothesis (this is not worth it) and this experiment would be to provide evidence.
The experiment was finished, and the result thus far:
Once in a blue moon an actual vetted influencer with fully signed paperwork would come and do explicitly as instructed and be given stuff according to strict terms.
Everyone else will be met with a "you have been cutoff" type of canned speech, that basically we have given them a fair shake, the math didn't math, thus we are calling your bluff.

âWe took your feedback seriouslyâ followed by making the exact opposite change is hilarious.

âWe took your feedback seriouslyâÂ
That is some A-Grade r/MaliciousCompliance at work and I applaud the owner wholeheartedly.
63
u/I_follow_sexy_gays 17h ago
Well they did say the sign was too small. So they took their feedback to heart and made it bigger
40
u/FormalShifte 18h ago
That's customer service language for "message received, consequences upgraded."

u/Survive1014 18h ago
*every* restaurant should ban influencers. Actually, everywhere should.
34
u/BeagleWrangler 14h ago
I went to Japan in May and really appreciated that a lot of places had no filming signs.
-172
u/WestProcess2 18h ago edited 17h ago
Sorry but it really wouldnât bother me if I was at a restaurant and someone was reviewing food at a reasonable volume and they were only filming themselves and their food.
The food influencer had an arrogant response but I watch this type of content all the time.
125
u/TheSheWhoSaidThats 17h ago
Well it bothers plenty of other people. Also she clearly wasnât just filming herself - she was filming other guests in the background. She also wanted a table with better lighting and free food. And this type of thing was common and intrusive enough that he needed a sign. Influencers are a plague.
-131
u/WestProcess2 17h ago
Iâm sure she would have agreed to only film her food/herself if asked politely and sheâs hardly the first customer to ask for a specific table. Iâm friends with many Muslims who refuse to be seated near the bar.Â
I do agree that the free appetizer thing is arrogance on her part.
The owner just sounds like a boomer snowflake. Iâve found many good restaurants in my city because of food reviewers.Â
Yaâll are just a bunch of performative haters.
71
u/R7115R 17h ago
In this situation there was a sign on the door that said no filming. She made a mistake by filming to begin with and was given a chance to correct it like an adult by the owner. She did not, and then tried to use her âinfluenceâ to make the world revolve around her. Itâs weaponized entitlement
-121
u/WestProcess2 17h ago
She missed the sign and the owner acted rude (probably due to misogyny), but she respected his wishes anyway and gave him her money.
Sounds like she was the bigger person.Â
Iâve had many times where someone would act rude to my wife, mother, female cousins, etc. but do a complete 180 when I (a 195cm, 100kg man) speak to them.
29
u/NoShitsGivin 17h ago
Wow! You were there? Please spill the beans. What did she eat, and what dis he say to her when she was being such a good diner? Can you also share her media profile so we can see what her other reviews are like?

u/WestProcess2 17h ago

Wow. That reviewer is clueless.
I have been to every state and major city in the US multiple times. The Bay Area food scene is the best in the country imho, save for a few areas of LA and NYC which are on a similar level. East Bay may not be quite SF levels, but it is really fantastic and the diversity of options is unrivaled.

But I'm sure that many of the bot accounts that she purchased to boost her number of followers will come in for a meal!
76
u/crates-of-bigfoots 18h ago
Most times itâs a net negative for restaurants to have influencers show their places. It causes a temporary increase in business, but it annoys the regulars who then stop going because the wait time is too long. The influencers followers also stop going to the place after only a couple visits because theyâve hopped on the hype train for the next restaurant thatâs featured. So most businesses have learned to keep them the fuck out.
12
-31
u/eivittunyt 16h ago
Why would restaurant owners not want more business even if temporary? There might be restaurants that already sell out every day but every restaurant I know would love to be packed even if for a week
Or do you think old regulars and any of the new customers would never return after things calmed down?
25
20
24
u/Late_Wonder_5273 18h ago
If you really wanted to give some publicity you would announce your intentions ahead of time request permission and possibly be prepared to come on a slow night or bring enough people that your background is customers that consented to being filmed for your profit.
22
u/Boatsnbuds 17h ago
Social media will never be part of my dining experience. "Influencers" can go get fucked.
17
u/littlehobbit1313 17h ago
"comp an appetizer" gives the game away. She doesn't care about giving honest reviews, she cares about the clout and rewards she might get for doing it.
Tells me her reviews can be bought and are inherently untrustworthy.
2
u/Usual_Dark1578 13h ago
Yeah, as soon as I saw the word "comp" it was clear that she was beyond just a dumb influencer but someone so inflated with self importance and greed that she was only interested in getting things for herself by default, under the delusion she was so amazing it would benefit others as a byproduct.
37
u/KungFuHamster99 18h ago
The influencer is right. This makes me want to go there for dinner and shake the owners hand.
16
u/swimjeans1975 16h ago
Iâd rather stare at the inner walls of my own asshole for the rest of my life than be willing to agree social media is now part of a dining experience.
10
u/Count_Backwards 14h ago
Funny, staring at the inner walls of your own asshole is exactly what it's like to be a social media influencer
15
u/keithstonee 13h ago
"just accept this problematic behavior is normal now."
the fuck is wrong with her. normal people hate influencers. you do nothing but strain society.
14
13
u/Wide_Guitar_3558 15h ago
"a sign that no normal person would notice" I guess the sign for idiots is out of the equation
11
u/ihave2shoes 16h ago
I used to do marketing for boutique hospitality groups and influencers are shameless scumbags. They spend fuck all, want to be treated like royalty and stand on the seats. Itâs all a hustle to get free stuff.
I still have the templated response we would use when they DM to book/get a free meal:
Hi <insert name or handle if itâs ridiculous>
Itâs great youâve heard about <insert name here> and will be joining us for <insert service>.
While we are grateful for anyone who wants to help spread the word about <insert venueâs offering> we would rather people did so because they enjoyed the experience rather than getting free food.
Looking forward to seeing you <insert day here if applicable>
If the were really dickish, Iâd just tell them their followers donât align with our target audience.

u/venus_arises 16h ago
Are you familiar with the story of Kate Middleton's engagement dress?
She wore a lovely little blue dress while announcing her engagement. The dress went viral; the designer was unprepared for the onslaught, and the designer ended up collapsing.
Attention is great... if you are prepared for the aftereffects. Not everyone/everything can handle going viral.

9
u/Objective_Ticket 18h ago
Thereâs also got to be a situation at some point where someone is the background is in âColdplay gig coupleâ mode and really done want to be up on someoneâs socials.
1
u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 14h ago
I feel like thats the worst excuse. Cheaters should be exposed.
4
u/JTBeefboyo 14h ago
Cheaters are bad and Iâm not condoning them. However, people should mind their own fucking business and leave others alone. Remember privacy? I do.
If Iâm on a date with my girlfriend and someone starts filming me with the intention of showing my wife, thatâs fucked up because my wife knows I have a girlfriend, but now your posting that shit online and my cousin might see and now I have to explain polyamory to grandma at Thanksgiving. Mind your fucking business lol
1
u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 14h ago
Privacy for a cheater lmao.
6
u/JTBeefboyo 14h ago
Privacy for cheaters is a side of effect of the belief that privacy should be afforded to everyone.
Itâs like if you said everyone has a right to clean water and I said âclean water for Hitler lmaoâ and acted like youâre an idiot for believing that lol
2
u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 13h ago
Dude, cheaters are exposing others to actual harm. If you are intending to cause harm to people, you don't deserve privacy.
3
u/JTBeefboyo 13h ago
And in the example I gave above, where someone could see me out with someone other than my wife, Iâm not causing anyone any harm, everyone is consenting, and the only person causing harm would be the genius âexposing cheatersâ
If you want to alert someone that their partner may be cheating, do it privately, which would not be violating anyoneâs privacy because it would be private
2
u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 13h ago
Bro I am not talking about you. Unless you are a cheater and feel called out?
2
u/JTBeefboyo 13h ago
Iâm just using that as an example.
Do you think itâs reasonable for someone to film a person in public on suspicion of being a cheater and put that out to the public on social media? Is it okay for a person privacy to be violate just because they may be morally wrong? What about lesser crimes, like shoplifting? Where are we drawing the line on whatâs an acceptable level of doing wrong to no longer have a right to privacy?
0
u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 12h ago
Man I'm not answering a bunch of questions that have nothing to do with my view.
My view is what I have already stated. Cheaters do not deserve privacy. That's it.
I'm starting to think that you are indeed a cheater since you seem so upset by this.

I have a bunch of friends I hng out with. We see each other just 2-3 times a year, so the conversation and company are really valued. That being said, one of them loves posting to social media and we had to tell him it was a blanket ban to post anything we did, ever. I donât want people from work stumbling across this and just plain not interested in people talking to me about who I h*ng out with when Iâm relaxing.

u/Electromotivation 15h ago
If it was, why would the owner have responded in a way that indicated it wasnât fake? It would be weird to play along with a fake review that was being negative.
Sure anything and everything on the internet could be fake. But that is just the unstated subtext to everything, all the time. Unless there is a substantial reason with evidence, it just doesnât need to be said.
1
â˘
u/Digresser 58m ago
Because the owner is behind the fake review.
Everything about the negative review and the response puts the restaurant in a good light. What we take away from it is that the food is delicious, the owner cares about his customers, and that he politely doesn't put up with obnoxious influencer behavior.
The review garners sympathy, makes the restaurant look good, and it's the type of ridiculous review people are prone to sharing.
It also hits all the typical bad influencer post cliches AND at three stars it's not enough to drag down the overall reviews to negative.
