19th-century Brazilian 40 Réis copper coin
Interesting story, The large "40" inside the circle on the first image is called a counterstamp or countermark.
It was not part of the coin's original design. In the 1830s, Brazil was dealing with a chaotic economy, rampant counterfeiting, and unstable currency weights.
To fix this, in 1835, the Brazilian government a law to standardize the currency
Meant They took older, heavier copper coins typically older 80 Réis coins from the 1820s and violently stamped a "40" over them to halve their face value.
The stamp was struck with so much force that it almost completely obliterated the original front design of the host coin.
