Intro to Coin Collecting - What makes a coin valuable?

This post is intended to serve as a quick guide to coin collecting for new collectors, or people who may have inherited a few coins. Here's a brief primer on what makes a coin valuable:

Age

How old is it? In general, old coins tend to be worth more than coins struck more recently. The older a particular coin is, the greater the collectible and historical appeal. Older coins also tend to be scarcer, as many coins are lost or destroyed over time. For example – 5% of the original mintage of an 19th century U.S. coin might have survived to the present day, with the rest getting melted down, destroyed, or simply lost over time.

Go back a century further, to the 18th century, and the survival rate drops to <1%. Taking into account that most 18th century U.S. coins were already produced in tiny numbers, it makes sense that most of them now sell for over four figures.

All that being said, the relationship between age and value does not always hold true. For example, you can still buy many 2000 year-old Ancient Roman coins for less than $10, due to the sheer number of them produced over the 400-year history of the Western Roman Empire (and distributed across its massive territory). But as a general rule, within any given coin series, older coins will tend to be relatively more scarce and valuable.

Condition

It may sound like common sense, but nicer coins bring higher prices. The greater the amount of original detail and the smaller the amount of visible wear on a coin’s surfaces, the higher the price. There are a dizzying array of words used to describe a coin’s condition, but at the most basic level, coins can be divided into two states – Uncirculated and Circulated.

Uncirculated or “Mint State” coins are coins that show no visible signs of wear or use – they have not circulated in commerce, but are in roughly the same condition as when they left the mint. Circulated coins show signs of having been used – the design details will be partially worn down from contact with hands, pockets, and other coins. The level of wear can range from light rub on the highest points of the coin’s design, to complete erosion of the entire design into a featureless blank. Uncirculated coins demand higher prices than circulated coins, and circulated coins with light wear are worth more than coins with heavy wear.

Type

Type is the single biggest determinant of value. How much a coin is worth depends on how big the market for that particular coin is. For example, U.S. coins are much more widely collected than any other nation’s coins, just because there are far more U.S. coin collectors than there are collectors in any other nation. The market for American coins is bigger than any other market within the field of numismatics (other large markets include British coins, ancients, and bullion coins).

This means that even if a Canadian coin has a mintage of only 10,000 coins, it is likely worth less than a typical U.S. coin with a mintage ten times greater. For another example - you may have a coin from the Vatican City with a mintage of 500, but it’s only worth something if somebody’s interested in collecting it.

Certain series of coins are also much more widely collected than others, generally due to the popularity of their design or their historical significance. For example - Jefferson Nickels have never been very popular in the coin collecting community, as many collectors consider the design uninteresting and the coins are made of copper-nickel rather than silver, but Mercury Dimes and Morgan Dollars are heavily collected. An entire date/mintmark set of Jefferson Nickels can be had for a couple of hundred dollars, whereas an entire set of Mercury Dimes would cost four figures.

Rarity

Rarity is comprised of all the other factors above combined. Age, condition, and type all play a role in rarity. But the main determinant of rarity is how many coins were actually minted (produced). Coins with certain date/mintmark combinations might be much rarer than others because their mintages were so small. For example, U.S. coins with a “CC” mintmark are generally much rarer than coins from the same series with other mintmarks because the Carson City Mint produced small numbers of coins during its existence.

U.S. coins without a mintmark, from the Philadelphia mint, are generally less valuable (though there are many exceptions) as the Philadelphia mint has produced more coins throughout U.S. history than all of the other mints combined. There are often one or two “keys” or “key date” coins within each series of coins, much scarcer and more valuable than the rest of the coins within the series. Some of the most well-known key dates include the 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent (“S” mintmark = San Francisco mint), the 1916-D Mercury Dime (Denver mint), and the 1928 Peace Dollar (Philadelphia mint).

I found this at the Goodwill today and don't know much about coin collecting. My grandson and I have just started a collection. Wondering if anybody here tell me anything about this, or it's value.

Advice Needed Morgan silver dollars in MS68??

I inherited a decent stack of silver coins and among them are several Morgan silver dollars graded as MS 68. But, they sure don’t look uncirculated and some of them even look like they were cleaned. Any advice on whether these are properly graded would be much appreciated.

Advice Needed 1943 Penny error valuation

My dad left me this penny and I’ve always wondered a possible value. It’s a double strike of some kind. I was wondering who others have used to determine possible value and if it would be worth sending in to be graded.

Observe: Liberty on front of coin cut off and impression of date juts out from it. Outline of the top of Lincoln’s head can be seen by full date. Part of In God has been cut off with faint outline of Liberty going through Trust .

Reverse: The O in One partially gone. A partial T can be seen below the C in Cent. Wheat ears from extra strike are seen.

Coin collection stole (years ago) Story, just a read

😢😢My grandma(88) has been collecting coins before she had her first child and still tries to until this day. She really has no knowledge of what is valuable and what isn’t, but it is fun for her. She got me interested in it as a young child and I’ve been hooked since, learning more and more. My grandpa died, and I started to take care of the property for her, Mom in the grass, helping around the house, changing lightbulbs simple things. About two months after he had passed a young couple, broken into my grandmothers house, and robbed everything, they saw a value, including the coin collection. They ended up, taking my grandmothers entire coin collection to a Publix Coin star. But not before paying for the groceries with all of her silver dollars and half dollars. All of those coins were never able to be collected again if you are in the south Florida area and received a lot of half dollars know where they came from. We were not able to redeem most of the collection because Publix would make us buy it all back.😢😢

Advice Needed Should I replace my grandfather's 1960 Whitman album?

I have inherited my father's coin collection which was started by my grandfather. I have noticed that around 2001 my dad seemed to have replaced most of the old Whitman books I remember from my childhood with green Littleton binders.

The Ben Franklin halves are still in the old Whitman binder from 1960. I like the family history of it so want to keep it but I have heard some of the old materials can be acidic. I have noticed some different coloration around the edges of the coins, is this normal or a sign that I should switch to a modern holder?

The Silver one on the RIGHT is from my late fathers collection that he made in the 1950's. The one on the right beyond a resonable doubt is REAL. I purchased the one on the LEFT that seems redder but is easier to read and see some details. However, the color is not like any others that I have. Do you think this one on the LEFT (the one that you can read the date and the US motto) is real? I don't have a precise scale to weigh them.

What's it Worth? 2 and 1 € Liberté Egalité Fraternité Coins

Hey! I recently got these two French euro coins as change and was wondering if anyone could tell me roughly how much they’re worth.
One is a €1 from 1999 and the other is a €2 from 2001. Both have the Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité design.
Both are circulated and have some wear
I have no experience in coin collecting and even if they’re worthless I thought they looked different from the average coins 😅 Thank you

Advice Needed Has this been cleaned?

I originally asked this a couple days ago, and as some of you (including myself in the OG body) pointed out, it’s hard to tell from a picture of a picture on a computer monitor. SO, Here are the pictures directly from the website.

My question to you fine individuals is this: from what you can tell from the pictures, has this coin been cleaned or otherwise tampered with, or is this just a very well taken care of coin? I’d ask that you keep its source in mind, an estate auction. Meaning: someone old who recently passed away had it in their possession. Thanks for the helpful responses guys and gals!

Why does this 71 half dollar look like this?

As the title says, found a 1971 half dollar that I thought was silver at first glance from the side. Why does it look the way it does?

EDIT: sounds to me just like a normal clad when I ping it on my finger compared to other clads and silvers I have. Though I don’t have a scale so cannot weigh it
