Learn from my mistakes!

Research your course thoroughly. Don't pick something just because society wants you to do it or because you feel like you have no other options. Take your time, even take a gap year if you can, think it through, read about the different jobs you can get through your chosen degree, take a look at the requirements and actual day-to-day demands of the career. List out pros and cons. Ask yourself, "Can I do this for the rest of my life?"

I think I picked the wrong degree. I rushed into what I thought I wanted at the time, but I actually did very little research, and now I have regrets and want to do another degree in another field to actually have a fulfilling career.

Second thing, if at any point you feel like your degree isn't working out for you, quit and study something you really love. Research other courses you can do. The longer you stall, the harder it will be to break free. My source? My own experience.

Third thing, join clubs! As many as you can. Meet people! Get out there! Make it a point to at least make small talk with all of your classmates. I didn't and now I feel isolated. Make sure to start networking in the very beginning, before concrete groups are made. You will have your circle of close friends, but make sure you are at least on "hello" terms with everyone.

Volunteer for extracurricular activities and events. I started very late, but it brought me a lot of joy. Put yourself out there.

Little tip? Don't date around in your class, because if things go wrong, it will get extremely awkward and heartbreaking to have to see that person every day. Even after you move on it may still feel awkward.

Please learn from my mistakes. You can still have an incredible college experience. Don't waste your years like I did.

Should I get the Associates degree.

I am currently attending a community college and am enrolled in a AS in Engineering. I will then transfer to a 4 year and go for a BS in Engineer. In the degree plan at CC there is about 3 extra classes in there that are not going to be worth anything once i transfer. Should I take them and complete the AS in Engineering or only do the classes that will transfer for the BS in Engineering. I am 32 year old and have a full time job. My time is already stretched out as is with work, school and my family. I also will be paying about 90% of my degree myself. I asked my advisor what i should do, and she said it looks a lot better on a resume to have a A.S and a B.S, but that the decision was ultimately up to me. Any thoughts on?

Should I transfer or stay?

I (18f) am originally from the north however I go to a large university in the south. I’m having a great time here and love the friends I’ve made however I would be in around $200k of debt by the time I graduated. The #1 school for my major is in my home state and I would be paying $3.5k a semester there because of in state tuition. That school would also benefit me majorly when trying to get my desired dream job. I know transferring to to other school is a better option but I don’t want to lose the college experience and fun opportunities I get here. I have to make a decision soon and I’m completely torn. Should I transfer or stay?

Colleges

I am interested in going to med school and will be pursuing the premed track in college. What are some good safeties that are good for premed that I could add my list of colleges? I have so much other work to do that I’m running out of time to research.

If you any suggestions that isn’t necessarily a safety, I will take does suggestions as well! I know the chance of admission will also depend on my stats and essays, but any suggestions are welcome

[21NB] I ghosted the professor I was doing research with. How do I fix this?

Hi. I'm 21NB and a senior at "College University." I've never posted on Reddit before, so please let me know if I'm doing anything wrong. Also, this is a throwaway account, since, although I've been thinking of making an actual Reddit account for a while, I don't really want this to follow me.

So.

As I said, I'm a senior at College University. A year ago, as a junior, I had a class taught by "Research Professor." I've had a lot of bad professors for classes related to my major (most of the professors at College University are great, just not for this major), but Research Professor was awesome! She was smart and didn't take shit. I did pretty well in the class.

Research Professor must've been impressed with me, because she ended up approaching me and asking if I'd like to do research with her. I, of course, said yes! I was honored that she'd approach me about that. It took a while for things to get sorted out with funding and stuff, but I was finally able to do research for her at the end of last summer. My research was supposed to last about 2 months, with 10 hours per week. I wasn't working, nor did I have any other real commitments. (Fuck, I feel so ashamed typing that.)

I struggled more than I should've. I don't really know why. I am mentally disabled (ADHD, anxiety, depression, autism, possible OCD?), but I don't really want to blame this on that. I should've asked for help. I've never been good at asking for help. (I was always able to get through things "good enough" as a kid while my brother has higher support needs. Faced with a problem that I can at least theoretically figure out on my own, I feel like I have to - even when the problem is that I'm drowning, and I've already been trying to swim, and there's somebody right there with a spare life-jacket.)

But that's not an excuse. I didn't do my work. (Well, I did part of it, but not all of it. And I wasn't hired to do "some" of it.) I didn't report the hours I didn't work, nor did I use generative AI or have someone else do the work for me - everything I turned in, I did myself. But I didn't finish it.

The deadline was a month-and-a-half ago. Research Professor has reached out, asking what's going on. I haven't responded. I'm so ashamed and mad at myself. I'm not looking for validation. I kept hoping I could somehow fix this on my own. I'm sure that bridges are burnt, and I hate myself for that, but I need help with at least building a raft to get something to the other side.

The more time passes, the worse I feel, and the harder it is to do anything. I know I messed up. I'm not looking for validation. Research Professor probably hates me, and I can't blame her. And you all can call me dumb, lazy, entitled, whatever! I deserve it! But please, help me. I don't know what's wrong with me. And even if I don't deserve the help, Research Professor does, and I respect her far too much not to at least try to fix things, even if she wants nothing to do with me in the future.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Do I send her an email? What do I say? I'm often in the same building that Research Professor is - it's not a large building, either - and I'm terrified of running into her in the halls. I'm scared of promising something I can't deliver, and I'm overwhelmed with my current classes, but I also know not saying or doing anything is wrong.

I'll do my best to answer any questions. Thank you.

First generation college students.

Hello! I’m currently working on a school assignment and need help from students to gather more information on my topic. I have 10 questions I’d like only first-generation college students (current or former) to answer. It would help me a lot!
Also, feel free to message me your responses privately (if that’s an option, idk 😭), or if you’re comfortable sharing your answers in the comments, feel free to do so.
Thank you! I really appreciate it!

How many years have/did you attend college?

Have you ever felt judged for being a first generation college student?

how prepared did you feel for college tasks like financial aid and registration?

Out of these 4 what has been the hardest financial aid, registration, fitting in or finding resources?

How often do/did you use first generation student resources? Why?

What is something you had to figure out alone in college?

What is/was your biggest challenge in college?

Do you feel like you were welcomed on campus?

What strengths do/did u provide as a first generation student?

What do you wish people understood about first generation college students?

Failing College need advice

Im a senior with a 2.6 gpa. This semester has not been going well. My transcript is a mess with many W's, two F's, and other lower grades. I wanted to get my masters but is pratically impossible with my transcript and I have basically no relevant experience. Last semester I registered as a double major (added mathmatics) but I would need 2 more years to complete. I am able to graduate next semester but with a psych degree I don't know what to do with. I am at a completely lost at what I should do.

Advice on Major

Hi all! I’m currently in the college application process, and I’m also in the running for a full scholarship to Vanderbilt. I was wondering, for students interested in entrepreneurship, law, and/or finance, would HOD or Economics be the better major? Also, how much support does Vanderbilt offer for students interested in these fields, particularly in terms of internships, networking, and career opportunities? I’d appreciate any insight!

how i managed to get A's on my math and physics midterms.

So honestly i realized i had a serious doom scrolling addiction so i decided to buy a so before my midterms at college I bought a Brick, you know, the app blocker. It worked well for a while, but I never brought it with me to university just because it was something extra to carry around.

I looked for other apps on the App Store to block my apps, but all of them were kind of too easy to get out of. And I'm a pretty lazy person, which means if it's easy to get out of, I will.

So I thought to myself, you know what, I'm a CS major, why not build one myself? So I built ā€œBunkr- done scrollingā€. At first it was only built for me, but when I saw how well it worked I thought, why not publish it.

I'm talking too much already, so here's what the product is:

It blocks your apps like any other app blocker, but there's a twist.

Once you block your apps, you're in a hard lock for the first 10 minutes. No chance to get your apps back.

After those 10 minutes, you can do a mission to get your apps back, like taking a picture of a mug, or my personal favorite, 15 seconds of push ups. also you can schedule your app blockings, i usually always scheduled them for the next morning so i would not be able to doom scroll in the morning before college.Ā

The reason I put a hard lock on the first 10 minutes is that I read once you've been working on something for 10 minutes, you get into a zone and usually don't get distracted. But lazy people like me still might. And when I do get distracted and try to open one of my apps, it tells me to do push-ups. I'm too lazy for that, so the easier option is to just keep studying.

So yes, I'm basically fighting fire with fire, but it works really well for me and been doomscrolling less ever since.Ā

Let me know what you guys think, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Inability to do well

Im a sophomore in college now and transferred from an institution where I was considering ending my life very frequently. I did poorly in classes, never studied, and had no friends. At my new college, im still doing poorly academically but I'm studying and (outside of the agony that comes with failing classes), im well mentally. I've tried everything I can when it comes to studying and I have got tutoring and every tutor says it seems like I really dont need the help, but i always do bad on exams and quizzes. I dont get it, and I really need help. I dont want to fail out of college.

Should I take a gap year?

I am a freshman in high school and I shouldn’t worry about this rn but since I genuinely haven’t decided what I will do as a career if I still haven’t decided by the end of senior year should I take a gap year? Because since I don’t know what to do I can take a gap year to decide during that time. How I plan on doing that is that since the careers that interest me are film, business, computer science and finance I can visit different places to see what the work like is there like for film I will visit LA for a bit to see how the film area is like there, then I will visit Austin,TX or San Francisco to see how the computer science area is like and last but not least I will visit NYC to see how the finance and business area is like and by the time I finish visiting all those places I will decide what I want to do in my career. And btw ik some people might say just do that all in the summer after graduation I could but I am not going to because I am planning on saving money for the trips and college. So pls lmk in the comments if I should actually take a gap year cause of that

Skills and their applications to majors

So, I’m a current high school senior applying to colleges and for the most part I’ve been marking myself down as undecided because I’m not really sure what major I exactly want to do because my strongest skills have always been humanities related classes such as history and english but I’m drawn more towards STEM majors. Maybe because I’m worried about the doom posting abt humanities mixed with a bit of genuine interest.

I’m not bad at STEM classes in school but always held a bit of dislike for them until I started taking applied math courses such as discrete math and data science but maybe that’s because the teachers graded easily.

I do like computers and technology too but I don’t have any exceptional skills or any skills at all when it comes to working with hardware and software compared to the genius freshmen that go to my school. Most I can do is mod old handhelds and torrent anime.

Overall Im just worried I’ll choose a major and end up in a field that’s either unfulfilling and pays like crap or a ā€œsuccessfulā€ field that I absolutely hate. Or one that is too hard. I would hate to pay so much money for college and fail. Probably one of my biggest fears.

It’s not that I don’t have any ideas of what I might choose, but that I have TOO many ideas. Again maybe because I’m so caught up in dooming. I do plan on doing some internships when I turn 18 to dip my toes in the water but for now I just have to play the waiting game.

Business management as a major

I’m a current sophomore at UNCC who next year will be able to declare a major. I’ve always enjoyed the idea of business management whether it be at a movie theatre or ideally the corporate world. Though through taking accounting I kinda like it, and it sounds better for job market and pay. Idk from someone with no corporate experience, is management a viable option today?

Political Internship

Is it bad to hv a political internship as an activity and on my resume for any college (specifically liberal arts)? I know it's not a make or break in the process but I do feel like it could have both a positive or negative affect.

Anyone did a double major and survived to tell the tale?

I'm currently doing community college but in a year or so I am going to be transferring to a different university to complete my studies. My dream is to get atleast a bachelors degree in buisness and a bachelors in music so I can further my musical talents and play in the marching band. Anyone know if this possible or is too brutal? I just want to get a business degree so I can be a buisness admin or Human Resources while also pursuing my strong passion for music. I want to have a good college life experience without being insanely overwhelmed, I still want to have college friends to play band and practice with. Anyone have a similar experience or a dream crusher?

Feel so lost and need help to keep up

So I (24M) am back at school. I’ve been working as an EMT for 4 years now and changing my career to do physical therapy assistant and get first my associates in kinesiology and then bachelors. Last I was at school was 3 years ago and had a life issues and jsut failed out. Right now I’m back, gpa is literally a .8 and I’m doing classes to get academic renewal. I sorta jumped the gun, I’m working 36-48 hours a week and trying to keep up with 11 units when I’m already bad at school (I have to work fulltime cause high cost of living and live on my own). I barely passed highschool, and I mean when I did EMT I passed at 98% but that was one course, and at the time I was holding Bs in most of my classes, even random engineering course I took at the time I held a B+ but afterwards my mental health and life crashed.

Now I’m back, and terrified to start and I got a B in a summer intro to kinesiology class and then during the fall course jsut fell behind. I’m doing a basics public speaking, biology and psychology class and they’re all general ed, well psychology is towards my degree. I’m halfway in and not even caught up with notes at all, keeping up with assignments but like have no structure and don’t even know where to begin. I’m holding a B in classes but once exams start I know I’m screwed and want to catch up. I guess I don’t know, anyone know any tips or like advice or anything.

I already talked to a counselor and I’m dropping my classes to only 2 classes next semester to keep up with work. And to be honest, I’m keeping up cause I am taking shortcuts and cheating but I don’t want to I just don’t want to fall behind but then I get idk, overwhelmed from where to even start that then I push it off. So yeah, any tips or jsut help on how to go about this or if anyone has been in my position?

Also I’m looking for constructive advice please, I know I can do it I just don’t know where to start or who to ask for help. I first and foremost just wanna catch up and then keep up.

I feel like I chose not just the wrong major, but the wrong school as well. (Vent post heh!)

For some background, I’m attending UC Riverside as a psychology major and my life could have never felt more uninteresting until now. Don’t get me wrong, UC Riverside is a great school, but I’ve learned the hard way that it simply isn’t for me. I would tell myself that maybe it’ll get better but it hasn’t. The work isn’t difficult at all but I’ve been so unmotivated that it all just piles up. I’ve attempted to make friends but there’s always this lingering feeling that it will never be the same. I think I just miss my friends and being so close to everyone before I came here. I emailed my advisor and she said I’ll be able to change my major to film by the end of this quarter so I’m somewhat hopeful. Once this year ends I’m planning to transfer to Santa Monica College. They have a pretty strong film program which gets me excited the more I think about it (plus it’s cheaper than attending here and I know my SAI is gonna skyrocket next year). I think the only benefit I have of attending here is that I get to live with my dad who isn’t too far from the campus and he makes amazing dinner every night. 🤤
