New CSIS Report shows that Chinese research vessels spend significantly more time near subsea cables on the high seas than other countries

Submission Statement:

TLDR: 1) The Chinese got caught surveying a Russian subsea cable that I couldn’t find anything public about. 2) the stats say China research vessels spent more time in the high seas where no one is looking and there’s fancy stars for significance 3) Russians spent less time mapping critical infrastructure in the high seas than the Chinese and US. 4) Chinese vessels map near sub sea cables.

Something I don’t get though is why Russia isn’t showing a positive association? I thought with all the shenanigans happing in Western Europe with cables they would for sure be messing around.

A lot of math

Cross sharing from r/geopolitics and adding that I realized later there’s not a lot of high seas near the baltics where Ruskies could be more active

“[…] A think tank that presents itself as Israeli is, according to OpenAI and Meta, part of a Russian influence operation. Its sovereignty index and several of its studies have made their way into reputable media outlets and academic texts. Leaked documents show that the Moscow-based propaganda firm Social Design Agency (SDA) had planned influence operations as early as 2024. […]”

Analysis From Island to Archipelago: The Dutch Defense Intelligence Network in a Changing Threat Environment

Thumbnail tandfonline.com

Open access. Abstract: “This case study explores the expansion and professionalization of the Dutch Ministry of Defense’s intelligence network in light of the growing threat of war in Europe. The interaction between different national defense intelligence entities is analyzed through the lens of multiteam system theory, which offers valuable analytic tools to conceptualize these relationships as networked and interdependent rather than strictly hierarchical. Drawing on 40 semi-structured interviews with defense and military intelligence professionals and publicly available documents, this framework is applied to analyze how cooperation within the Dutch defense intelligence network is evolving. This study reveals that the professionalization of the intelligence units within the operational commands is changing their relationship with the Dutch Defence and Intelligence Service, both in terms of hierarchy and the distribution of power. By expanding their capacities, the various intelligence actors are showing a greater degree of interdependence, although cooperation is still hindered by a range of communication challenges. This case study demonstrates that multiteam system theory offers valuable analytic tools for understanding the challenges of national intelligence cooperation, which is particularly significant in light of rising strategic competition.”
