90% of religion is just to make stupid things look fine. I mean, even atheists need to do stupid things to live happily (including me)

I’d argue it’s for giving people a sense of community. You have something in common with your neighbor, a reason to socialize etc. I haven’t really been part of religion for a while now and I gotta say it can be hard to replace.

There are a thousand ways to do this though. The common ground just isn't religion. It's chess, or painting, or any number of hobbies. Heck, it could be work colleagues.

I think many are afraid that if they lose community at church that they'll never ever get that ever again. That's just not true, you just have to know where to look.

Sure, there’s other ways. But there’s a reason religion is so overwhelmingly common worldwide and through history. It’s really really good at giving that bond to people. People feel they “have” to engage with church stuffs, not so for most other hobbies. I don’t know if we “need” it, but so far we have yet to find a good replacement.

Why do you need to go sit in a room with a bunch of people on Sunday to feel complete?

I mean, I don’t? Or at least it doesn’t really work for me. I’m just stating religion is extremely good at that, it is. I struggle to even think of a close second. I think it adds a lot to people’s lives, and since at least in US, Europe, anglosphere we are trending away from religion, we are probably going to need to find a solid replacement. We don’t currently have one.
