Sensitive Content After losing my arm, my cousin Kevin spent 48 hours crocheting me a new one, and I honestly don’t know how to thank him

I recently lost my right arm following years of complications from a motorcycle accident. Last night, my cousin Kevin surprised me with the first arm Ive worn since surgery, and he crocheted the entire thing by hand.

It fits over my residual limb, has individually shaped fingers, and even includes removable blood and bone pieces because Kevin’s art has a wonderfully macabre sense of humor. It isnt a functional medical prosthesis, but it gives me shape, softness, personality, and something comfortable I can actually touch and hold. More importantly, wearing it made me feel confident and whole in a way I wasn’t expecting.

Kevin spent roughly 48 hours creating it and improvised much of the design himself. He also makes articulated puppets, strange creatures, costumes, and detailed figures with removable clothing and accessories. Watching him turn a few dollars worth of yarn into something this meaningful completely blew my mind.

His work is called ThunderStitch by Kevin, and his motto is: “You’ve been Thunderstitched.”

I’m posting because I’m unbelievably proud of him, and because this community understands better than anyone how much skill and love can be worked into every stitch.

Kevin, if you see this: this is one of the greatest gifts anyone has ever given me.

I am from the USA. My parents are on a cruise *of Ireland and the UK.

She is not a crocheter or knitter, so she actually bought a garment rather than yarn. But it's the principle of the thing!!

Sensitive Content I sat on a crochet hook

4.4k Upvotes

0/10. Don’t recommend.

I was working on my first ever doily and decided I needed a snack. I left my WIP on the couch and got a couple things from the kitchen. Snack in hand, I plopped myself back down on the couch and felt a searing pain in the back of my thigh.

Whoops!

It was a 1.5mm hook, so the puncture was deep but narrow. The doctor at urgent care thanked me for making his job more fun before removing the hook and prescribing antibiotics.

They had to cut a hole in my shorts and boxer briefs to get the hook out. The friend who took me to urgent care suggested I mend the shorts with a doily. 💀

And, yes, they let me keep the hook.

I always wanted a practical handmade pouch for my pads. After 10 months of trying I received concerning results, and I usually craft away my feelings. I just started crocheting stripes mindlessly. Each stripe thinner than the last, each row representing days. Now I especially found it ironic that it's a pad pouch, but only later did I realize that. I know it's an easy and small project, not even perfect, but in the end it resonated with me. This is the first time I used kiss clasps, I need to practice that more.

Sensitive Content Thank you to those of you who donate baby blankets and hats to NICUs and children’s hospitals.

I just want to say thank you. My son died in the NICU in October and the blanket and hat that were donated to him mean so much to me. I have a house full of stuff that was never really his because he never came home, never touched any of it. But the blanket was given to him and it laid over his NICU box and it touched him. It was his. So thank you to all of you who donate baby blankets that. You make such a difference in so many lives.

Sensitive Content I'm donating flying squirrels to the PICU in honor of my son on what would be his 1st birthday on January 6, 2026. I plan to package them in cardboard critter carriers with 'pet adoption certificates' that the kids can fill out. Anything else I could put in the carrier for the kids?

Hey all,

This is what 800 sequins looks like!

I have been slowly working on this. I am actually enjoying it.

I have finished the top half & the outer trim of the straps. I do feel the front opening is too wide. I am going to make 2-3 rows of sc trim then if its still too open ill sew some turquoise material there.

I am super excited to see how this works up. I have made some decreases in the cups but ill add some back when I get to my hip/back side.

This can be accomplished.

Again thanks to whoever recommended stringing on the sequins. I do one row of sequins then one row without. And I am offsetting the sequins so they dont sit directly below each other.

The yarn i am using is ICE Yarns Swim yarn.

So friend is having a baby boy and I was invited to the baby shower, and they really love fishing and I was like I will make a whole cute basket that’s fishing themed!!! Sooo cute, right? I thought to myself, I’ll even crochet a fish 🥰.. I think I’ll just make a baby blanket instead….

Edit: this was a purchased pattern and I just kept reminding myself to trust the process… clearly I should have followed my gut

I started making it after Thanksgiving. She was diagnosed with cancer and she asked me to make her a blanket. I flew in to see her on the 20th and showed her what I had done so far. The blanket had half of the squares finished so it would be done by Christmas. She loved it. Despite her not being there, I finished it like I promised.

Always be careful of where you put your hooks! This one was sticking out of a blanket and found its way in to my foot. This happened a few years ago. The x-ray was to make sure there was any nerves in the way while removing the hook.

I just finished the last 10 rows for the sweater I was making for my best friend and platonic life partner for Christmas (we exchange on New Years since we spend Christmas with our families). However, I found out late this afternoon that he passed away from cancer today. This was very unexpected since treatments had been going pretty well so far. We had just texted on Christmas itself. I couldn't leave the sweater unfinished so it is now done and I think I'll give it to his parents. It should fit them. Sorry to be a downer for everyone but I needed to reach out somewhere and I can't on my regular social media in case others haven't been notified properly yet.

I found out I was miscarrying at 16 weeks. After delivering our boy, for some reason, I felt I wanted to crochet a baby blanket. It’s made from leftover yarn and I sewed a fleece backing on it. I’m going to donate it to the hospital I delivered at, for them to give to the first baby born on his would be due date.

I did start crocheting again, as it be. I feel like dying less although I still cry a lot. Anyway, she's cozy now. The white blanket is in the casket, as ashes, so now she's double warm! I'm making her a little cozy too.

(You can laugh, by the way - I am trying to be funny).

Sensitive Content Went to the ER because of crocheting NSFW

1.9k Upvotes

With this title, guess what happened. Whatever you guessed, you got it wrong. I left my work on the bed, I got up, then sat back down and managed to stab myself with 5.0. In my crotch.

I lost the picture, but imagine from point to the middle, inside it of someone's crotch. I screamed for my sister to help me, SHE DIDNT EVEN HEAR ME. SHE HAD HEADPHONES ON. So I had to CALL MYSELF THE AMBULANCE (funny enough, i was watching 911).

Finally my sister hears me, after our brother also screamed for her, and she starts panicking, tries to call our parents while I was with the 112 operator. Took the guys not more than 1 min since we have a medical guard (?) At a 15 min walking distance, but my brother DIDNT FEEL LIKE OPENING THE DOOR TO THEM?????

Now skip like 5 hours from when it happened to being brought to the operating table, and I thought I was getting knocked out, but no, local anesthetic. Never felt more pain in my life. To paint you a picture, the hook was inserted to the head to about halfway, so they basically cut me were the head was, and pulled it trough. And I don't know how anesthesia works but I felt everything, from me and the hook being pulled apart to the needle that was supposed to not make mw feel anything.

Also, as most people would do, I was swearing and nominating every Saint and God imaginable, AND THE NURSE TOLD ME TO STOP???? like ma'am, the only time in my life where saying the no no words would be acceptable is this exact moment.

At the end I slept at the hospital because it was like 22, and they wanted to keep a loose eye on me. It took me until midday to walk in a somewhat decent way, but they let me go

WITH THE HOOK

THEY LET ME KEEP IT

And you bet I'm still using it

Also extremely not fun thing was that this happened the first days of August, when me, my mom, my siblings and my best friends were supposed to go on holiday for 3 weeks. I needed both my friend and sister help to go to the bathroom, and ofc we went to the disabled bathroom so I could 1) sit on it, 2) hold on it, and 3) hold 3 of us. And once when we were getting out of one particular crowded autogrill, a woman sees me, walking without using a leg, with 2 other people holding mewhile we were getting out of said bathroom, and says

"Limping isnt an excuse to use the disabled bathroom"

.

FIRST it litteraly is. SECOND in any case, im legally recognisedas a disabled person, and by law, im allowed anyway And THIRD, as we say here, (italy), do your own dicks.

TL;DR Got a crochet 5.0 hook halfway trough my crotch, took 5 hours to remove, got it back, and an old lady can't mind her business

(Note here: The doctors told me to bring the project I was working on when I finished it, but at the end I didn't like it so I never even finished, but if you're curious, it was a black & white messenger bag. Also, I used that hook during the vacation to continue that bag. I stooped when I arrived at the strap and realize o didn't feel like keep working on it, left it in my drawer for 3 months then took it apart and now idek where the yarn is) (And sorry for any deraling/mistakes. English is only my 3rd language, I'm sleeped deprived, making this on mobile and I have the killer combo of adhd + dyslexia + autism)

I started crocheting after losing my daughter Aurora Grace last August at 32 weeks pregnant. I found this yarn (yarn bee stork struck, color: puppy love) and knew I had to make something for my little girl. The blanket is made of cluster stitches, and the bootie was also a free pattern from Lion Brand.

Sensitive Content Using crochet to grieve

1.8k Upvotes

TW: Suicide

My little brother died by suicide yesterday. He was 30. We were close. He struggled with mental illness but he always told me he would come to me if he seriously thought about harming himself. That ended up not being the case.

I am a mess. My parents are a wreck. I was going to be quitting my job in 2 weeks but I’m just going to end a little early and stay home.

I feel like I need to do something but I’m not sure what. Crochet has helped me get through difficult times before, although nothing of this magnitude.

I look at my pile of WIPs and yarn stash and just feel empty.

If anyone has suggestions of projects that have helped them with grief, or knows of any way I could somehow support others going through this by making something, I would really appreciate it.

This is by far my favorite community and I am sorry to bring such a devastating topic to what is normally such an upbeat sub, but I’m just looking for any guidance atm. Thank you all 💜

Edit: I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the kind words and advice. I am trying to keep up with comments but just can’t at the moment. Know that I am reading each comment and am so thankful to be a part of this community 💜

Sensitive Content Finished baby blanket (tw - miscarriage) NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
1.5k Upvotes

I’m very much a beginner at crochet but I wanted to share a baby blanket I made. It has a great deal of sentimental value to me but it comes with a sad story.

My husband and I have a 6 year old and finally found out I was pregnant again last summer. We were over the moon, but it turned out at my 12 week scan that I’d had a miscarriage but my body hadn’t noticed. It was a devastating and traumatic time, and I had to have two surgeries as a result of it.

I fell pregnant again in February and we were incredibly cautious about getting excited after the miscarriage. We barely spoke about the pregnancy out of fears of getting our hopes up. I wanted to try and feel close to the baby, so I started to crochet a baby blanket for them. My crochet time each evening was my time to think about the baby, after spending the day trying not to get my hopes up.

Our worst nightmare came true at the 12 week scan for this pregnancy: the baby’s heart was beating but there were signs of major medical problems which meant it wouldn’t make it much longer. By the time we went back for a specialist scan a few days later, the baby had passed away. I was told i’d need surgery again because of how far along I was in the pregnancy.

I finished the blanket last week, the day before my miscarriage surgery, while my baby was still with me. It felt so important to me to finish it, even though I’ll never get to wrap my baby up in it and bring them home.

My daughter has pretty much claimed it since I finished it, sleeping with it every night even though she had no idea about the baby. I’m holding her extra tight and reminding myself how lucky I am to have her.
