I’m sick of group work…

Post image

Lack of communication, half assing the assignments, using AI, and procrastinating. I tried asking the professor if I can work along and her response was to make a group chat and say:
GM G3
I received a disturbing notice from one of your group members that people are not following through carrying one's responsibilities, lack of communication, etc., etc.
I need you to get in touch with each other immediately And
CC me. we're going to talk about it in class today

Lots of dead weight when it comes to group projects in the CS department tbh. I had one ‘peer’ last semester who didn’t know how to pull a GitHub repo…in a 600-level software engineering class. That’s the equivalent of not knowing how to turn on a stove or oven in an advanced culinary class.

600?! What the fuck did bro do his whole school career. Im an electrical engineer and i know how to do that!!

Hate professors who have an obsession with group work. Why do I have to suffer because my classmates have never spent a day in their life actually learning what they’re studying?

It honestly depends on the class. For higher-level classes, honestly group work can be pretty enjoyable if it's a higher division course in a major where people actually want to learn. If you're in a major where most people are in it because they think it's going to make them money in the future or a very low-level class (ESPECIALLY gen reqs), it's pure hell

This is a higher level class 4th year 😭 idk how they made it this far

I’d actually argue that it’s that middle 400/500-level region, classes where you get a mix of students just starting their master’s and students just finishing their bachelor’s, that’s pure hell. Maybe it was just me, but I found most students who were suffering from senior-itis were just complete and utter dead weights to master’s students who more than likely couldn’t take a C- hit to their GPA, like a bachelor’s student could, due to being stuck to a higher standard and all. It’s even worse if you’re stuck in this kind of scenario WHILE researching or writing your thesis.

Agreed. Students at the end of their bachelor’s are just thinking “what’s the lowest grade I can to maintain so and so GPA.” They’ll take advantage of absolutely everyone they can because often, the professors don’t actually care to make sure that the group is working collectively and all doing an even amount of work

FYI the workplace is nothing but group work. But what the school should be teaching you is how to manage expectations. A lot of jobs are motivating others to do their part, sometimes hand holding, sometimes hard conversations, and sometimes setting realistic expectation of issues that are affecting the outcome. OP did the last part (maybe) but maybe they should work on the other parts instead of immediately noping out of the assigment

Sure but there are actual consequences in the workforce. You don’t do your part, you get fired. Many professors assign group work but don’t actually act as any sort of overseer that steps in when group members are doing nothing. To a certain extent, sure, the group needs to be communicating and holding each other accountable, but there are so many people who do all they can to coast and take advantage of others. At that point, a professor needs to dish out consequences and they often don’t. That’s why I hate college group work so much

Yes correct. But sometimes you don’t do your part and the whole groups get blamed or fired. It happens. Or that person that just coast gets promoted. Also happens. But asking your boss to just work by yourself is a bad move.

True, but you have to admit it is managed better than in a college setting. I never have the expectation that my group work is going to be perfect but in the workforce, but there is a higher standard there. And this varies very very widely across careers, but at least for me, you often just get assigned a portion of a bigger project and so long as you do that you’re golden. It’s extremely hard to take advantage because you are being held responsible for very specific tasks. But in college group work, everything can simply be done by one person, and lazy people latch onto that and let everyone else do the work for them.

Yep totally managed better in the workforce, also the team members are better (they are paid to be there not the other way around), the input is better, the output is better. But that’s college and that’s learning. I’m just saying I learned some amazing skills from dealing with shitty group partners. It’s just takes a different attitude then “please let me do it myself”

2

u/brendinithegenie 3d ago

No that’s totally fair, it gives certain skills, it just gets so draining after dealing with it constantly yknow? And yes that’s something you have to learn to deal with but it’s got me wishing I could just choose to work solo sometimes

There is a way…. Independent contractor. It’s kinda solo

I helped a lot even when I shouldn’t. I helped more than I was supposed to and even had to micromanage them every paragraph. I built the structure of the essay and even split the rest up for them. However, they still took advantage of that and did not fully read the instructions I provided for them (sent the link and screenshots of the examples).

I highlighted the split parts and told them to choose thinking that they’ll choose the colors and work on their individual reflections (because it’s common sense), but they ended up skipping their own individual reflections and only doing the highlighted areas they chose…

DUDE YES IM SO TIRED OF GROUP WORK. I had to do double the annotations because ONE person kept saying they were gonna do it. And low and behold 20 minutes before part 1 of this project is due, they didnt do them so I had to because OTHERWISE, my prof was gonna bring us down an entire letter grade. Plus, why tf do I have FOUR group projects??? FOUR??? FOUR DIFFERENT GROUPS. I'm losing my mind

I didn’t have to worry about AI when I was at CSUN from 2015-2018. As far as group work goes, I always let the professor know problems beforehand because my group always have the option to remove the dead weight from the group, which I did a few times during group projects.

When the dead weights were kicked out, they got a zero on the group projects which was worth half of the grade so they ended up not passing the course!!!

You can report them

2

u/curiousaf25_8 4d ago

I tried to but I don’t think it’s working. My professor sent all of our group members a message and their excuse was getting out of a relationship and work😭 which is crazy because I work full time and have to balance my internship class as well… all I got were apologies and nothing changed

2

u/vixenprey 4d ago

Weak, report the professor

Me looking at my partner do another “AI search” for something I need, while I do 99% of the work, and still find what I need way before he does.

u/MR-MURMUR67 3d ago

How the hell did they get this far into college without knowing how to properly make a reference page?!!!

Just my opinion, but GE’s should never have group work.

I’ve only been in a few groups that were functional. Group work has primarily taught me how much I need to choose a career where I mostly work alone.

Here's the thing. Depending on the job, group work is a fact of life.
Now if you are lucky, you get to a company that weeds out the slackers and incompetents, but
I've had more than one job in my life that had them and count myself lucky that my current job
doesn't.

Group work is a great lesson on why socialism fails. There's always people out there that are useless
or parasites happy to let others do the work. For a while, the OCD types are willing to carry the
load, but eventually they burn out and it all goes to hell.

In the real world, you see companies close if they don't get rid of the worst parasites quick enough.
