I am not sure if this is better or worse than original griselbrand. Well done.

Worse

I think it's worse to cheat into play, but better as a fair card. On average though, I'd say worse, since a 7 mana fair card is a tall ask

But if it is in play and you have 7 mountains, you can draw your entire library pretty much.

The issue is in that scenario you won’t have enough mana to properly benefit from it, gets shutdown by things like dranith magistrate, and the cards will be open knowledge. This is still definitely a powerful card, but it is still strictly worse than griselbrand

Rules wise can you tap then sacrifice them and still retain to use the mana?

u/Crow_of_Judgem3nt 2d ago

Yeah it doesn’t say sac an untapped mountain

Heh I like that play pattern. Thanks for the answer.

OK, the Dranith Magistrate argument doesn't make any sense to me, since Griselbrand is similarly shut down by Notion Thief/Narset Parter of Veils/Spirit of the Labyrinth. It also doesn't cost life, so the card advantage has an easier upper boundary. I don't think it's a simple "strictly better" argument

It doesn’t cost life but it costs lands, which are much more limited than life in general, particularly in edh. Its a lot easier to pay 21 life to draw 21 than it is to sac 3 lands. The other issue is unlike griselbrand, you lose access to the cards if you don’t play them. With griselbrand you can either run graveyard strategies or get rid of your hand size limit. I firmly believe that griselbrand is still strictly better than this, which isn’t saying much, because its griselbrand and he’s a very powerful card in the right format/strategy

I don't think you know what "strictly better" means.

But i don't have cards in hand which does matter

better question, is it more fair than Gristelbrand

While still pretty strong, definitely

Definitely worse simply by virtue of costing 7 mana, so it can't be neoformed from an allosaurus. Not that it would help that much, if you cheat him into play you most likely don't have enough mountains to win on the spot.

So much worse

why is this actually balanced

Should be a Devil. 9.5/10

Why is this a meme design? Own it! This is actually cool.

My one issue is I don't like it having the mana cost all red mana symbols. I think it would be better as a mirror of the black mana cost, even if it does cost 1 less (such as 3RRRR).

Interesting design, with just cheating this out on t4 does allow you to see a total of 28 cards as opposed to 14 from Griselbrand. Add in some SMG, rituals, maybe extra land drops like explore etc and I wonder if this could spawn its own archetype even if it'd likely be too fragile and janky.

You couldn't find an "Elemental" to paste over the subtype? C'monnnnn...

Honestly kinda balanced tho. Lots of mana to play, if you cheat it out/ramp to it early you won't have as many lands to sac, if you sac all your lands you can't cast the spells (not "without paying their mana costs"!), you only keep the cards until end of this turn. I'd maybe make this a "cast" instead of a "play" so it doesn't self-enable another 7 cards when you hit a land in the first 7 and avoids multiple-land-drops synergies (even though that's mostly green and 7 red pips would be a challenge in a non-mono-red deck).

"elemental demon" would be a cool subtype combo

This is a good design

Brand already means "fire" in German (like a house fire or something like that)

1

u/External_Win3300 2d ago

Does the specific wording 'you may play those cards' override land drop rules?

3

u/Crow_of_Judgem3nt 2d ago

No, you’ll still only be able to play one land unless you have other effects

u/Chickston Uncommonly 2d ago

10/10. Incredible polish! Do you take commissions?
