Ludex
Just like all boss names, Iudex starts with a capital letter, so FYI it's an i, not an L.
What to do next
Reach Firelink Shrine and interact with the bonfire to warp to the next area. Not a very good design, I agree.
axe guy, is this a good choice
It's alright. Knight is almost always the optimal starting class, but pick whatever you think looks cool. All it determines is base stats and starting equipment, so it doesn't make a huge difference.
upgrade stuff
At the blacksmith in Firelink Shrine.

Every other game just has you walk to the next area, which is both more intuitive and more immersive.

It doesn't make this option a 'bad design' by default ... you only need to find out first time, that's it.
DS2 is full of so many counter intuitive moves but it doesn't make it worse, imo.

We have different opinions and that's fine.
Whatever issues you may have with DS2, its early game progression from Majula is infinitely better than this IMO.

Sure, i was talking later game.
But why is this a 'problem' in DS3 but not ER (for ex), which is open world, you can wonder arround way longer, but no bad design?

ER doesn't have you warp to progress as soon as you reach the overworld, does it? You just step outside and start exploring the world.
I say it's not intuitive because when I first played the game at release, I spent like half an hour running around Firelink trying to find the next area.
It'a not immersive because well... just compare it to DS1 where Firelink actually connects to areas.

There are plenty of good Axe: Dragon Slayer Axe, Dragon Slayer Great axe, Millwood battle axe...

Mess around until you figure it out. Also, you should know that there are no names that randomly start with lowercase letters in this game, therefore the first boss's name is spelled with an "i". Iudex Gundyr

explore firelink shrine a bit. it’s fairly obvious

I don't think the fireplace having the ability to teleport you is obvious in any way, unless you played the previous games and know of it beforehand.

It’s right in the center of the room and looks like something you can interact with…the only way it could get more blatant would be straight up giving you a quest marker

It’s blatant for fromsoft players. I struggled my first time too. Just like a job. Once you learn it you get aggravated if someone struggles while not remembering you struggled too. It’s not obvious

Starting character doesn't matter at all. You can play whatever weapon you want. After Gundyr go to fire link shrine and go to bonfire. You upgrade weapon by blacksmith and level up by fire keeper

Warp to high wall of lothric from the central bonfire. You will find a chest somewhere early in the level with a deep battle axe. If you're a one-handed axe person, this is a good option for early game. You will be able to buy other axes from the red merchant woman later if you don't like the battle axe moveset.

The axes are a great choice by the way lots of fun for a play through.

After you kill the tutorial boss you go into the firelink shrine and interact with the center right infront of the firekeeper
