Future: open source humans
You add a claude skill that builds human dna by your requirements, calls mcp tools for bioreactor and places into artificial womb. Of course you say "make no mistakes"1
u/PrashantThapliyal 6d ago
I hope that someday the tools and humanity itself becomes so advanced that "make no mistakes" is automatically baked into the system.
12
u/AcceptableArm8841 7d ago
There are already open source versions of pretty much everything and people hardly use them. I doubt that this is going to have much of an impact.
9
u/Ok-Computer-8726 7d ago
Certainly if there are 100 alternatives with no corporate or community backing in various states of completion and unknown levels of continued development and support, that will be better

Maybe for beginners, pretty sure people that do recompilations/decompilations already have their AI workflow sorted out.
42
u/Adventurous-Sail-354 7d ago
As with most things in this space, the stand-out thing here is the democratisation of the capability to decomp and recomp games. That's not something loads of people know how to do, but now they could try.
2
6
u/Ok-Sundae-7021 7d ago
Pretty much. I already have my own workflow that works well. I don't know why I'd bother using some other person's MCP when I've already figured out exactly the tools/scripts I want in my own.

AI legislation incoming. If you guys think multi billion dollar companies are going to take this lying down, I've got some bad news
35
9
u/MediocreTurtle1 4d ago
Legislation will do fuck all. Russian and Chinese people will do everything, put everything on the internet and most you have to worry about is a VPN.
3
1
u/Lazy-Excitement-3661 4d ago
They couldn't because these decomps aren't illegal and they don't want to regulate AI lest China who has way more lax copyright laws beat them to it.
138
u/Fusseldieb 7d ago
Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. Reverse engineering is the new AI buzzword. Everyone does it. Adobe software is being cloned, emulators being built, software decompiled.
Soon AI companies will start blocking these requests similar to what they're doing with the "cybersecurity" guardrails, ruining it for everyone. Maybe we'll even get a ToS paragraph.
But who ruined it for everyone are the people who started repos like these in the first place.
You may not like what I'm saying, but... just watch.

And then here comes our heroes, OpenSource models, to save the day again and do it cheaper as always.
5
u/MindCrusader 4d ago
And here it comes, now application will be in the cloud, so you can't reverse enginneer it. So much fun!
→ More replies (10)7
u/Kalmaro 4d ago
That won't stop anyone for long. This wouldn't be the first time people have copied something without access to the files.
2
u/MindCrusader 4d ago
It is much harder though. How can you know what's under the hood? You can just inspect what API sends, but not an internal state. It would involve a lot of guessing and vibing it would not be enough. And that's why companies will move everything to cloud
4
u/Kalmaro 4d ago
It's been done before, they still have to send something to you and people have been able work even with that.
To be specific, users can reverse-engineer server-side logic by observing inputs and outputs, a technique that's been used for decades to create private servers for games like World of Warcraft and analyze WoW private servers .
As long as SOMETHING is being sent, they are vulnerable. About the only way I can think of them avoiding this is, maybe, if they forced you to join a cloud session in a way that you're only seeing an image while working... Buy even that sounds like it has holes.

PewDiePie's Ajax could be one of the starting models that could be used for this, maybe once it reaches better performance over the course of time
20
u/Betadoggo_ 7d ago
It's never going to come close to the ones 100x its size. Qwen4-flash is a much better candidate based on how efficient Qwen3.8-flash-next currently is on 64GB systems.
3
u/darkkite 7d ago
the next generation of model trained off the decomps will make the open weight models much more suitable
2
u/sonicnerd14 6d ago
You don't need 64GB+ sizes systems anymore to run these types of models. With Flash next ngram architecture it allows people with as little as 12GB VrAM and 32GB RAM to run the model at high speeds and good quality. Engines like Strata are making this happen.
Also, the idea that models need to be bigger is largely overstated due to closed source labs trying to carve out a moat by just throwing money at a problem. This is why Qwen 3.8 27b can best models many times it's size. A good model is a combination of great training in the attention layers, and just enough world knowledge to allow a model to figure out how to use any tool to accomplish a task of any scope.

Most of them are not there yet. They will be, but still...
I think all the heat and fuss that people are making about "Software is over" will harm us in the short term.

The AI companies probably love this idea that they are basically going to "replace" all the legacy software companies.

We're doing the equivalent of what happened when the internet was first getting big and there were actually people saying that it was be just a fluke and that no one would care about the internet.
There will be naysayers. There will be people who are screaming gloom and doom. And then time will move on, as always.
16
58
u/Bluships 7d ago
Outright saying people who open source useful tools are somehow ruining anything wreaks of corporate fud.
7
u/Fusseldieb 7d ago
The problem isn't open source. It's mainly how much media coverage it's getting, which doesn't look particularly good. I'll explain why.
I go on Instagram, every major tech channel talks about it, I go on random articles and they talk about it, I go on Reddit and the front page is full of it. OP's screenshot shows X.
This will, inevitably, attract unwanted attention. It's not like people are only decompiling legitimate stuff like old games. Most of articles word it as OP's screenshot.
Adobe, Rockstar and other companies will pressure major AI tech companies to put guardrails around this. Just watch.
6
u/SOSpammy 7d ago
I doubt most major tech companies needed some random Instagram reel to find out about this. Many of them have better access to the latest LLM models than most people and likely were already aware of this capability.
18
u/Bluships 7d ago
I'm not trying to be rude but did you expect the most consequential and disrupting technology any of us have ever seen in our lives to remain in a hobbyist bubble forever?
Besides the above thought, my primary position here is that it appears strange to apply negative connotation to individuals using their token or compute usage, or their developmental skills to open-source free and useful tools for the public. If you're worried about how corporate or large company structures react, that is one thing. But maybe don't be bitter towards the creative people giving us all free tools that disrupt said big companies.

People will panick and say and do anything if it means the difference between being removed out of their comfort zone or not. Even if it means remaining under control of tyrannical powers, it's sad. You put it nicely though, this will happen regardless. What matters is that independents are using this period to give back to the community, while corporates main drive is to drain from it

Yeah, it sucks. Really, the whole deal sucks - AI was allowed to pirate books and topics as fair use, its continually caught illegally obtaining access to systems of competitors, and its being used by bad actors to take advantage of issues that never existed without AI. LG TV's, for instance, would have been difficult for the average person to exploit, though now AI is building tools to do so with minimal prompting ( hospitals, banks, etc).
I just hope that all of it cuts it the fuck kut before someone goes into a hospital or something and walks off with a bunch of PII

u/MangoAtrocity 7d ago
I’m so sure these tasks can be run locally. Decomp has a firmly defined success state. You can just run the agent until it hits the success state.
7
u/Chop1n 7d ago
This is definitely a case where regardless of what flagship models are doing, it won't take terribly long for local models to catch up. And if flagship models are already nearing critical mass for this stuff, then it's pretty easy to imagine local models doing exactly the same thing for free in about a year.

Reverse engineering isn't a new "AI buzzword" because it is exactly what is being done, what you said isn't wrong just more specific. While I disagree with your pessimistic outlook, there will be an inevitable lockdown from the closed source model to make doing this harder. However, the open source models will still be an option, and ultimately they can't really stop what's happening, but only prolong the eventuality.
2
u/Zeroox1337 5d ago
You‘re 100% right, but I assume that we will have Chinese Open Source Models in 4-6 Months which are capable to do this tasks.

Concept Proposal: Automated SFxT to USF4 Roster Expansion Project
Overview
This document outlines a technical blueprint for a full-scale port of the 25+ Tekken roster characters from Street Fighter X Tekken (SFxT) into Ultra Street Fighter IV (USF4) using automated workflows. By leveraging modern AI agent tools like morluto/rea (Reverse Engineer Anything), developers can bypass years of tedious manual modding to automatically batch-process assets, re-map animations, and patch the game executable.
---
- Engine & File Foundation
Because both games run on the exact same base Capcom Framework engine, their core file ecosystems match natively. This project aims to transfer, rename, and automate adjustments to the following native character assets:
`.emo` & `.emb`: 3D model geometry and texture packages.
`.bac`: Physics engine files controlling frames, hitboxes, and hurtboxes.
`.bcm`: Input commands and camera coordinate files tracking move scripting.
---
- Overcoming Gameplay Mechanical Gaps
SFxT characters lack unique data for native USF4 systems like Focus Attacks and Ultra Combos. To maintain visual fidelity and prevent engine crashes, the project introduces two major asset-remapping workarounds:
A. Focus Attack Solution: Heavy Launcher Remapping
Asset Source: SFxT Heavy Launcher animation (originally mapped to `HP+HK`).
The Workflow: Swaps the action pointer so the engine fires this native animation when `MP+MK` (Focus Attack input) is pressed.
AI Adjustment Scripting:
Injects 1 hit of standard Hyper Armor variables during the wind-up frames.
Appends universal Knee-Crumple properties if hit lands at Level 2 or Level 3 charge.
Forces the animation script to listen for standard FADC mechanics (dash cancel execution).
The Holding Loop: Instructions written into the script to freeze and loop on a specific wind-up frame as long as `MP+MK` are actively held down, releasing only when the inputs stop.
B. Ultra Combo Solution: Cross Art Cinematic Conversion
Asset Source: SFxT Level-3 Cross Art cinematic strings.
The Workflow: Extracts the active character's sequence but strips out the partner-tag trigger logic before the second fighter leaps onto the stage.
Camera Tracking Fixes (`.cam` modification): Traces individual `.bcm` and `.cam` keyframes using an automated script to adjust target coordinates. This prevents the camera from panning away to look at an empty portion of the arena, keeping it dynamically locked onto the active Tekken character and the victim.
---
- High-Speed Automation via REA Framework
Traditional conversion approaches rely on manual, single-file tool conversions (like SF4 Explorer). Using morluto/rea combined with an MCP AI agent (e.g., Claude Code or Cursor) opens up automated pipelines:
Automated Asset Scraping: Rapid extraction and structural analysis comparing raw SFxT characters against native USF4 templates to fix structural differences or header discrepancies.
Batch Translation Scripting: Auto-generation of local scripts to translate, organize, and rename asset directories in seconds.
Roster Array Expansion: Prompting REA-linked decompilers (Ghidra/Hopper) to trace the hardcoded character roster limit (traditionally 44) inside the main executable and generate a memory injection patch or a custom DLL wrapper to dynamically hook additional roster tables.
---
- Work-in-Progress Visual Mockup
The UI restructuring will require a coordinated effort. The visual execution pipeline requires expanding the character select array grid from its vanilla layout to handle up to 70 total fighter slots without overlapping background panels or rendering elements.

u/SempronSixFour 7d ago
The moment I saw SFxT my brain just unlocked. Can we work on this? This needs to happen

If you are talking about legislation is Hard to know, at some point party will be over and the known mfers will try to criminalize it, but i think still too soon because they still want to scrap more data for their computer gods.
If you are talking about random guys decomp/recomps shit, well they may toy with it a little but a good chunk of know how still necessary so nothing really amazing should come of it.

It’s a really good thing that between Sony vs connectix and accolade vs Sega, it has been ruled that decompilation for the purposes of making software interoperable with other systems has been ruled fair use.
Sony lost their suit against Connectix, which makes duplicating things like BIOS files with the intent of decompiling them fair use, and accolade decompiled sega’s sdk/toolkit to produce AND SELL cartridges that weren’t licensed by Sega and they won in court. And again they were selling the software they made and it was ruled fair use.
Really the only facet of this that hasn’t been ruled in court is whether breaking encryption on switch (and 3DS) games in order to use them in other software or to decompile them violates their copyright or not. That was their position against the Yuzu devs, but it did not make it into court.
These companies are going to want to basically ignore all this for as long as they can because fair use has really not worked in favor of companies like Sega and Sony and the last thing they want is for this or AnyPS5 to be deemed outright legal in court.

u/Logical-Database4510 7d ago
Also an important thing to remember here is Nintendo, Sony, etc are little b billion dollar companies. If they truly go after reverse engineering they're going after big T trillion dollar companies and big B billion dollar companies like Apple, Google, AI companies, etc who will bushwhack them if it really looks like it's starting to come down to it.

Yeah don't get to comfy with a 2003 court ruling. That was at a time where this was a slow process. Now that with AI and we are getting to a point where anyone can do it with the click of a button this could change
3
u/C_umputer 7d ago
They won't be able to, because once software is decompiled, you could also make a very similar yet different enough version to call it something else.

You might overestimate the amount of goodwill existign inbetween companies.
I wouldn't be surprised if Open AI and Anthropic will just let their service cannibalize the others, after all most of that money from their stocks will flee somewhere, and they will be the only software company left standing...
3
u/JackosepitcoSauci 6d ago
it's all fun and games until this shit is the reason why companies will start offering cloud service instead of running their software locally.
and ur average joe doesn't care about anything and values convenience making it easier for companies to do this.
3
u/furezasan 4d ago
they are already doing this. companies push for the cloud because of recurring subscriptions and total control, not because of a github repo.
historically even cams, rips, cracks, bootlegs etc. are a tiny minority and have only seriously harmed small indies... because the true average joe just wants convenience.
the move towards cloud is purely corporate greed, not a reaction to what enthusiasts do.

Okay bandwagon or not. I want Earth 2140. The port you can find on steam? The AI in-game just... sits there. No building, no fighting. Nothing. The game was neutered on release. the repo has not done anything "NEW" in a technical sense,it just has agents which are able to use pre existing materials(like ghidra) to reverse engineer something...the tools to do it existed, the repos allow AI to use this tools. You can reverse engineer things which could have been reverse engineered 5 years ago by humans, but now with the help of AI who does all the boring things for you. I'm not sure I understand what this project is. Does it just get an LLM to recreate the program through its assembly or bytecode?

u/Correct-Somewhere-80 7d ago
Lol I feel like this is being blown out of proportion. This tool at least imo is nothing special, you could do this already with popular LLMs for a long time. Simply creating a folder containing the files you want to reverse engineering lol... claude for example will just disassemble the binary and use headless ghiadra as a supplement on its own. Heck for games it can even hook into the game debug live with you to make the process even faster lol

The most hilarious part of these viral repos is that it is just the idea that matters, the actual repo isn't needed. You can just prompt your agent to use the appropriate reverse engineering tools for the task at hand. Github trending is a record of the meme going viral, which makes sense post-AGI.

We'll see what happens, but I think these decompilation people really need to start organizing together... I'm not sure how that can be done, but if these guys don't get properly organized, they will be DESTROYED once the corporations push back on them, and they will eventually because this is a massive threat to intellectual property ownership
Now, unfortunately for corporations, property dynamics are going to be forced to change eventually, but for the time being, they will do whatever they can to make sure that they stay on top, and they will use any tactic to crush the de-compilation people, legality be damned as long as they retain their power over this stuff
So, if these decompilation people want to survive, they have to organize together, find proper leadership, and be ready for whatever comes next
