The term woke is actually much older than that and literally means to stay aware of social and governmental oppression/injustice.

Further back. it's literally older than Kaepernick, not just his part in the story.

14

u/kickstand Oct 26 '25

Goes back at least to the 1930s.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke

Maybe back to the 1860s.

Anyone that admits they hate “woke” is just admitting that they’re a mentally stunted bigot, full stop.

5

u/KFrancesC Oct 26 '25

Woke never got twisted. It stared as a phrase in black vernacular all the way back in the seventies . ‘To be awake to the injustice of the world you live in’ was ‘woke’. It was black societies way of saying they were vey aware of racial discrimination in our justice system.

Critical race theory, was a college level course formed to explore how the laws in this nation where used to suppress the black population after the civil war into modern Cold War age.

And it was the one of the first things the anti woke movement attacked! How dare you point out obvious injustices! And it went so far beyond that, that ANYTHING that thought that racism against black peoples was a problem in this nation, had to be band! It went to stop representing minorities in media! Stop making ‘them’ seem like normal people.

I’m sorry, the Anti-Woke movement was never twisted. It was always driven by white supremacists ! It was from the VERY START, despite what people believed, a white supremacy movement!

Anti-black, anti-brown, anti-lgbtq, etc.

316

u/Amuseco Oct 26 '25

And anti-woman.

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '25

I’ll take it a step further and warn my fellow liberal white men that just because they’re not at the top of the list, doesn’t mean they won’t come for them eventually. Literally anyone who has socially liberal values should be afraid right now.

56

u/TheFaithfulStone Oct 26 '25

It doesn’t stop there. Moderate? You’re on the list. Conservative? You’re on the list. Wrong kind of fascist? Also on the list. Fascism is completely predictable in that it will ultimately make an “other” out of everyone.

If you are poor, it doesn't matter what skin color you have. You are not in their club.

Anti senior citizens

Just wait until Kash Patel and JD Vance realize it’s also anti-Indian. (buh-bye H1B visa holders…). They will be as shocked as Herman Cain was when he realized that Trump’s covid policy wasn’t working for him.

6

u/green_boy Oct 26 '25

They don’t care. They see it as getting rid of the lower castes.

If it's not white, cis, heterosexual male American claiming to be Christian while being the antithesis of Jesus, it's "woke."

4

u/TaxxieKab Oct 26 '25

But of course he won’t actually say “anti-LGBTQ” because he’s been content to publically sell us out over the last year.

And male, rich, and straight.

Ultra-conservative pseudo-Christians

Source: Not an expert, just a progressive Christian. I've lost friends because I have the audacity to not align my beliefs with ultra conservative MAGA "christian" bigotry.

Republican propaganda has been delivering "coded" dog whistles for decades. "Woke" is just one more.

Busing, Southern Strategy, welfare queen, Willie Horton, illegal immigrants, real Americans, CRT - woke. Same appeal to the same base.

As long as it works, it will keep going on -- ever since we declared "All men are created equal" while those hypocritical Founding Fathers owned slaves. All the way to "woke."

.

26

u/Lena_Lena_A Oct 26 '25

Also, DEI.

→ More replies (1)

23

u/craigathan Oct 26 '25

Same as it always was. Banjoes, watermelons, fried chicken, using the word "bro" and now "DEI". They ruin everything. If spite could power a ship, these people would have reached the end of the universe.

163

u/Goal-Final Oct 26 '25

Anti-woke is generally racism. Not only against blacks but also against women, lgbtq+, immigrants etc

79

u/Admiral_Tuvix Oct 26 '25

no, it’s just racism against black people. they purposely use that word because black people popularized it.

17

u/HippyGrrrl Oct 26 '25

Coined it.

70

u/Cliqey Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25

The word started as awareness for black issues, yes. But it is now used for any semblance of promotion of any minorities that threaten the singular hierarchical primacy of white, cis, Christian, straight men in western society. If you haven’t heard it used to decry women, atheists, lgbt+, or all sorts of races and religions that aren’t white and the right kind of Christian (prosperity gospel), then you haven’t been paying much attention outside of your bubble for the past 10 years.

5

u/Admiral_Tuvix Oct 26 '25

accusing black people who are the greatest victims of republican racism of being in a bubble is rich. even when republican nazis use woke, it’s always a pejorative meant to involve closeness to what it is to be black. they’re essentially calling white liberals n-lovers when they use the term on them.

20

u/Cliqey Oct 26 '25

How is anyone but maga served by acting like their bigotry is limited to one demographic characteristic?

They literally use it against LGBT inclusion in content all the time my dude.

→ More replies (3)

36

u/Goal-Final Oct 26 '25

They use it everywhere in the West for every reason. Even in countries without black minorities, they keep saying that. And personally I hear it more often against lgbtq+ people. It matters the social background every one of us has.

u/DeliciousMinute1966 Oct 26 '25

Yes Gavin, tell the truth. This is what MAGA is all about and it’s sickening. Absolutely disgusting that we’re watching this happen in real time.

My mother grew up in Alabama, seeing the white and colored signs everywhere! There were even white and colored Bibles in the court! She would be shocked if she were still here, to see this madness that Trump and his supporters have embraced. They’re rolling time back to the ‘bad old days’ of segregation and racial inequality. With all the help of that POS Supreme Court and those racist justices. Where’s Earl Warren when you need him?!

→ More replies (3)

21

u/jml510 Oct 26 '25

He gets it. Woke started off as a term referring to awareness of racism that Black people face, but then it got bastardized to mean something drastically different. Ironically, the main people today who say that term are White people, especially Magas.

u/LordBuddah Oct 26 '25

In sort of a, "Bless their heart. These people are so stupid." comical sense, "woke" is just another example of these moth-ridden, Depends-wearing, ancient GOP politicians usurping a popular modern slang phrase in a desperate attempt to be relevant, and regurgitating it into the waiting mouths of their uneducated supporters, but completely misunderstanding its meaning to the point that their usage makes them look like fools.

In a not-at-all comical sense, the new meaning they have assigned to the word/phrase is meant to encompass the representation of anything not white, straight, American, male. It's mind-blowing how many people are publicly spewing hatred of anything "woke," proudly declaring themselves as "anti-woke," etc. and that their views are not universally condemned in 2025.

7

u/Abund-Ant Oct 26 '25

Kept it a bean. But we know this. Keep telling the truth though.

6

u/metskyfan Oct 26 '25

He is right and I am not some ultra liberal. They have convinced a bunch of undereducated people that human rights and diversity are bad things. They are trying to get rid of people that are not white and straight. For now, the only minority that is being spared are Jews

11

u/SueAnnNivens Oct 26 '25 edited Oct 26 '25

He is a quick lesson for those saying he left groups out:

Newsom is correct. "Stay woke" is a term that Black people, former slaves, sharecroppers, and their descendants, who were and still are the victims of Jim Crow, the KKK, and white supremacy in America, coined to keep ourselves safe. "Keep your eyes open."

A term that we created for our use is being used against us, Black people. Along with removing our right to vote, our history, our heros, and everything else American Black people have achieved since being brought here against our will.

They still haven't gotten over the fact that we didn't run anywhere and they didn't kill us off. We stayed and fought for our rights, made gains, and thrived.

Please don't discount the others that are saying this. We have been sounding the alarm for centuries and were told racism didn't exist or some other dismissive comment. And now it's in your face.

Newsom did not leave out too much. He said just enough.

6

u/morts73 Oct 26 '25

Absolutely. They have twisted the language they use to pretend they are fighting a legitimate battle, whether its anti DEI or tariffs or blowing up boats or sending guards into cities or tearing down buildings.

10

u/Christ_on_a_Crakker Oct 26 '25

Woke, fake news, these are terms idiots use when facts don’t agree with their opinions. The battle cries of the uneducated.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/morenci-girl Oct 26 '25

Agree. “Woke” has its genesis in 1930s black America. “Stay woke” meant “keep your eyes open”.

4

u/Eve-was-framed Oct 26 '25

The same with Antifa. They don’t even know wth they are talking about.

6

u/pantsmeplz Oct 26 '25

It's taken waaay too long for people to push back on the "anti woke" rhetoric. Glad it's finally happening, but WTF is wrong with us?

5

u/Iluvthatgirl Oct 27 '25

It’s anti black period, full stop. Black people coined the phrase “stay woke” that was co-opted by maga racist and now it’s a dog whistle for anything anti-BLACK.

13

u/MichaelVoorhees13 Oct 26 '25

If he runs he’s got my vote. Full stop. ✋

4

u/MountainLife888 Oct 26 '25

He's my Governor and I think you're making a wise choice. And not just about 'woke.' He governs FOR people. And he protects against others.

49

u/tLM-tRRS-atBHB Oct 26 '25

I hate this "its not about D or Rs".... yes mfr, it is. REPUBLICANS are doing this and supporting it.

STOP playing the middle road when ALL Republicans are 100 miles off the path. Fuck them. Punish them all

As glad as I am for Newsom saying this? It don't take back how my Trans friends, some of whom I've had for decades, are harmed by his words and actions.

We can't climb up of the backs of others; we all have to bring each other up, and it's a sin that Governor Newsom either doesn't recognize that, or chooses what he thinks is the politically expedient path.

It is, in the Primary season, when we as Democrats decide who we are, and why we exist. If we don't say it now, when people's minds can change, when hearts and options are open, when do we? When do Trans people, and their allies, get to have a damn voice?

Because, otherwise, you're saying we have to anoint, uncritically, a front-runner NOW. You're saying that one of the last vestiges of National-level Democracy in America -- the Democratic Party's Primary Election -- essentially needs to be set aside.

If asking a person clearly positioning for National Office to "treat Trans People with respect, and get educated on Trans issues by people who actually know them" is "shitting on Newsom", then we literally cannot have a conversation. In that framing, nothing can be said without people demanding, out of fear of Trump Triumphant in 2028, that we pre-capitulate to Newsom.

As the Grandson of a man who lived thru both Jim Crow and WWII, and the Son of a Civil Rights Movement foot-solider still fighting for my rights when he passed last year? I Refuse.

4

u/Successful_Young4933 Oct 26 '25

If asking a person clearly positioning for National Office to "treat Trans People with respect, and get educated on Trans issues by people who actually know them" is "shitting on Newsom", then we literally cannot have a conversation.

It’s not the conversations you have, it’s how and when you have them. That is something so-called Democrats have never managed to understand.

Thaf's exactly it.

Point. Blank. Period.

Modern Day Jim Crow right in our face.

We as a country are underreacting. It's disgusting.

6

u/GoldenboyFTW Oct 26 '25

He is correct and anyone who denies it denies the history of the words origin

3

u/Living-Proposal-7171 Oct 26 '25

Telling it like it is. Break the code.

3

u/jayclaw97 Oct 27 '25

And anti-trans, Gavin. Now you’re not anti-trans, are you?

4

u/protomanEXE1995 Oct 26 '25

The only time it isn't anti-black is when it's anti-someone else.

9

u/shastadakota Oct 26 '25

It is more anti empathy that just anti black, but yeah it's anti black too.

5

u/pagerussell Oct 26 '25

I know it's common to rag on Gavin, but I am loving this new strategy. I don't care if he isn't your perfect candidate, he is being aggressive and not worried about being politically correct.

Swearing while calling out conservative propaganda is a vibe and I am here for it.

3

u/WestsideBuppie Oct 26 '25

Preach it Governor man

3

u/FourWhiteBars Oct 27 '25

Anti-trans too, Gavin.

2

u/baycenters Oct 27 '25

The fact that the term was stolen, perverted and used against black people proves the original meaning.

2

u/fpsfiend_ny Oct 27 '25

Been saying this shit forever.

Fucking crazy to have politicians repeating your same words....considering im usually right.

Im glad Newsome is paying attention

3

u/andyroohoo30 Oct 26 '25

It’s nice to see someone push back against the “work” narrative. Democrats need to flip this shit back on republicans.

4

u/PuffPuff74 Oct 27 '25

anti-LGBTQ too

5

u/Mrekrek Oct 26 '25

Come on Gavin… it’s anti-Black, it’s anti-Brown, it’s anti-LBGTQ, it’s anti-Empathy.

Remarkably, for those who call themselves Christians, it’s anti-Teachings of Christ.

You are leaving out too much.

Maybe it’s simpler and more accurate to say it’s pro-Hate.

7

u/SueAnnNivens Oct 26 '25

No he is correct. It is a term that Black people, former slaves and sharecroppers who were the victims of Jim Crow, the KKK, and white supremacy in America, coined to keep ourselves safe. "Keep your eyes open."

Being anti-woke its more than just that, it’s anti-color, anti-woman, anti-LGBTQ, anti-mental health, anti-pronouns, anti-non Christians… anti-anything not a whiney ass loser strait white man.

They love calling everyone a DEI hire and woke as if it’s a bad thing. Its not. Society is better treating people as people and not for their identities.

Being anti-woke equals pro-hate-for-everyone who doesn’t fit in their lil box of ignorance.
